TRW brake pads first impression

I experimented with Geoff's pads and rotors (Raybestos) as well as Hawke pads on my T1. I enjoyed the lack of brake dust but wasn't happy with the decrease in stopping power.

I was following another thread about brake pads and a member said he tried TRW pads and was happy with the results. My T2 has 26,000 miles and even though the stock Pagids had lots of miles left on them, I decided to swap them out with TRW pads. They are built in Spain and are ECE R90 certified. I read that they also produce less dust than Pagids with similar stopping power.

I found them on eBay for $94 including shipping for front and rear pads.

Installation was a breeze due to the low mileage on the vehicle and I was able to reuse the sensors. There was a small lip on the front rotors but very little wear.

After bedding the pads and driving 50 miles, the same initial bite as the Pagids is present and overall braking is as good if not better than the OE Pagids. I like that there is very little fade.

There does seem to be some dust on the wheels but that's probably due to the bedding process. I did eight 60 MPH to 10 MPH hard braking runs and I'm sure that created some brake dust.

I was hoping for less brake dust and I'll compare my findings after another 100 miles.

It was only a $94 experiment and 90 minutes of my time and so far I'm happy with the stopping power of the TRW pads.

Perry,

I have been running TRW pads front and rear for the past 12 months and find them equally as good as the OEM pads but with less dust. Mind you they are not dust free. As far as brake feel and consistent performance, they are excellent.

Stuart, I didn't expect them to be dust free but was hoping for a little less dust then the Pagids.

What I found surprising was the price. Under $100 for all four corners

We'll, after one tank of gas or 400 miles, there is definitely less brake dust. I'd say half as much as the Pagids. The TRW pads provide the same stopping power with 50% less brake dust. It was worth the change.

Here is a pic of a wheel after 400 miles

Very much agree. Both front rotors and Raybestos (I truly dislike them) are coming off next weekend. I got set of TRW rotors and pads off eBay ($191 to my door) ready to go on. Can't wait to trash bin the Raybestos pads and warped rotors.

Yea, the price and quality of the TRW brakes are hard to beat.

The quality of these TRW disks is superb. I've installed many brake sets over the years for different European cars and this set is probably best I've seen. Better packaging, rotor is black painted on the edge and hub, no anti-corrosion spray to clean off. Nice set!

Is there any indication on where the rotors are made?

I've got the same sentiments as others towards Raybestos and Hawk, Pagid is the only thing that's worked for me so far. This looks like an interesting alternative. I quite like the edge painting...that's where all the corrosion happens!!

It's hard to say where this set was manufactured. There are no marking of the disks and my set came shrink wrapped, no box. The disks thou are nicely wrapped in high quality anti corrosion wax paper made in US.

I know their pads are made in Spain. The E9 on the box specifies that the product was made in Spain. If the rotors come in a box look for a E code to see what European country they were made in.

E1-Germany; E2-France; E3-Italy; E4-Netherlands; E5-Sweden; E6-Belgium; E7-Hungary; E8-Czech Republic; E9 - Spain; E10-Yugoslavia; E11-British; E12-Austria; E13-Luxembourg; E14-Switzerland; E16-Norway; E17-Finland; E18-Denmark; E19-Romania; E20-Poland; E21-Portugal;

I will be going with these over OEM. If anyone is interested my cost on these is pretty good. $61 for front $36 for rears, also have the sensors. $9.50 each aftermarket. Also have other brands...and OEM. I am always happy with most any TRW product.

thanks

I have nothing but good things to say about TRW products.

Also just got Meyle premium front brake discs (350mm) from a supplier in the States for USD $63 ea which are another brand I have had good things to say. These would be a good match with TRW pads.

I get them wholesale so you would not be able to order from them anyway. You can order them through me. $135.00 ($18 for UPS ground domestic ground) for everything. Prices subject to change as this is just a intro for these. After this they will be front $64, rear 42, sensors 9.50 each Either OEM or german aftermarket.

Any update on this thread guys? I'm also due to replace my rotors and brake pads soon on a T1, since they've worn out. I was browsing for these online and i didn't specifically know which manufacturer to choose. Then i came upon this thread and decided to get TRW too, even if they're a bit more expensive than say Ridex or Vaico for example. I'm currently running OEM rotors and some ATE brake pads. The braking performance hasn't been great lately and i'm looking to get TRW for both pad and rotors.

How's the driving and braking so far with them? How do they last in time?
Any mileage update would be very appreciated!

PS: refreshed the thread :)

Dusty, dirty, filthy! I replaced the fronts recently now my wheels are black in a matter of days. Like I said, thats the only issue, otherwise they grab like mad. Comparing? Hmm not a huge difference to be honest, maybe the TRW are more grippy but really hard to say since I installed new rotors too. I'd say it's minimal not some drastic difference. They all are good and need to pass specific requirements anyway. I never felt like the Pagids did not stop the car, they are grippy too. TRW are good but make my wheels dirty. I did not think I would care that much but I do because they are BLACK and a pain to clean now. I had very little dust with the OEM Pagid

TRW pads and Zimmermann rotors all around. I've put on about 10000km and have been very pleased. Low dust and great, predictable stopping. $740 Canadian for whole car.

My only complaint is the hats on the rotors are starting to show some rust. I may paint them when I swap to winter tires in the late fall.

The only thing I like to mention is I have used Bosch they don't need us but they don't grab at all. I have put front Brembo brake pads made in China I believe they are grabbing much better I haven't had them on for that long so it's only been about 500 miles. I don't know how they're going to wear the rotor it doesn't seem to be leaving much brake dust yet. Also when replacing the front rotors there is a left and a right do not misplace them

just ordered a set of four rotors for my v6 3.2 (330mm) . Here are the prices/part numbers of TRW vs VW:

Rotors (Front) 7L6615301N TRW DF4762S VW 440€ Online Shop 116€ set of 2
Rotors (Rear) 7L8615601C TRW DF4487S VW 177€ Online Shop 101€ set of 2

That's a heck of a difference.
Low dust ceramic TRW brake pads next.

I decided to try ceramic pads recently. I purchased EBC red stuff pads because I had them on my GTI and was impressed with their performance and lack of brake dust. On my Touareg, the initial bite is not as strong as OEM but overall, braking performance is very good. Brake dust is about 50 percent less then the Padgid pads I had on before. I used OEM rotors with these pads.

Recently purchased a sister vehicle to my 08 TDI, couldnt resist as this one owner/one dealer serviced vehicle with air suspension, bi xenons and only 90K kms on the odo.
I'm in the process of transferring all the good bits across with one of the first jobs was to transfer the upgraded front 6spot (17Z) calipers.
I had been running these with Brembo (#P85 069) pads and was generally happy with their performance and total lack of dust, just out of curiosity I decided to replace these with a set of TRW (#GDB1547) pads which I intended to fit originally but changed my mind in favour of the Brambos.

WOW, what a difference the TRW made!

These pads pull the Treg up on a dime no fuss or effort, bite and feel is great, wonderful first impressions, only done a couple of hundred kms so far so early days yet, will report back if anything changes.

I have brand new brembo pads and rotors (oh boy, the price on those.. I still hate myself for buying them)on my T3. I'm very happy with them. I wanted Textar at first but couldn't find any in stock...
I compared mine with a pretty new T4 with OEM everything. My brakes do a MUCH better job at anything. They don't really bite like in my 7 series (obviously).
The Touareg comes with brakes, and that's all I can say. The thing is you need to press pretty hard on the brake pedal to start decelerating, and it's very soft. It's VERY disturbing at first, but ince you get used to this, you will start to enjoy braking. I personally like the mushy pedal.
Stopping distance is not exactly impressive. You need a BMW for that (but we still want to go off-road, so forget the BMW thing).
I don't see any dust so far, but I don't really use the brakes at all when going on a longer journey (when dust usually appears). It's a nice habit, improves fuel economy a lot. Of course, this is impossible if you have a "coasting" function.

When I was searching around for brake pads (it's not yet time to change them, but just to get an idea), one place told me they had Textar pads. Now I've never heard of this brand before. How would it compare to Pagid or TRW?

#35 ·
I have never used pads made by the 2 brands you just mentioned, so I can not make a comparison.
I have always used Textar pads and I am very satisfied. The only thing I can say is that I prefer them over Brembo. Never had them in my Touareg, but in my 7 series they bite really hard. Much better than what came from the factory (I'm not sure what these were called). Dust is a bit of an issue, but I kinda like the dusty rims.

#36 ·
Brembo pads are made for them by Pagid .

#37 ·
Well it seems that the consensus so far is for TRW as they seem to offer the best combination of good performance and low dust. On my 05 T1, I've had the same pads since I bought it in 2012 (I've driven it about 80k km since). They perform amazingly and are virtually dust-free. I've always been curious as to what brand they are so I can replace them with the same when the time comes, for both my T1 and T2.

The early Touareg's had the full Brembo setup. Very nice, but pricey.

The rotors come in two basic versions. The faster wearing high carbon version that Brembo sells, and the harder wearing, but less grippy traditional version.

Pads come in a variety of versions. EU90 certified will be more in line with what German car drivers expect. Pagid makes the OEM Brembo pads for the early Touareg.

It is up to you what you want.

I would urge anyone who tows 7000 pounds to stick with the full Brembo setup.

If it is your daily driver and you don't tow, then even the cheapest pads and rotors should be able to stop you. However, you might not like the "feel" if you go down to this level.

Wow! this is EXACTLY how it felt to me after driving both Tregs. My T1's brakes, even though they're five years old (to me, don't know when the previous owner had them installed), still have a very linear gripping feel and at near the end of the pedal travel they will grab that heavy Treg like it was a little Golf. On the T2, the braking is good but the pedal feels mushier and I don't get that linear feel which always kind of makes me feel uncomfortable.

I just installed Textar pads all around along with rotors - I can confirm they really grab/bite much more than the OEM pads. I predict they will be dusty given the amount of initial bite. It's too dirty from snow around hereto be able to tell yet for sure. I have been pretty happy with Akebono Euro on my BMWs - they dust very little and have a more linear bite, but less initial grip e specially in cold.
