Well I am starting to look at a replacement for the R50. Not interested in the R line as want a proper 4WD. The RRS is starting to get my interest SVD8 has good performance. Might not do it but starting to look. The RR has an options list that is almost impossible to decipher I'll not order but look for a demo and prices I can afford.

If you have some good stories that outline my insanity for even considering the ************* then please post.

I did exactly the same comparison, with RR the options are confusing, too expensive, and then from a technical perspective even though R line doesnt have low range it still has better options, approach, departure angles, etc
If low range is a must then theres no other option in that category except the RR... Instead of sport how about the vogue?
Rline with MTR's will take you many places

Thks.Sìngh, hard choice and one thing that sticks out is current car.has most of.the options.

If you use the approach of "preventative/scheduled" maintenance in the same fashion as they do in the aviation industry, you should be able to make your current vehicle last 25 years.. That's the direction I am heading..or at least trying to.,

Like your thinking, idea Stuart, maybe I could do the same.
Do you have service schedule for the Touareg to carry out preventative maintenance?

Yes this is what I am attracted to. However it would be a hard change after owning two V10's for ten years and I must say a very reliable ownership period on both vehicles.

By the way Singh, I think the RRS has a bit more off road ability than the R Line, but I would not most likely use it.
Just checked the specs again and noticed the following:-
Wading depth better by 250 mm, ramp angle better approach and departure also better . One thing that is vastly better is a spare wheel. This being said the bullet proof reliability of German engineering gets me attracted to the Treg.

Hey Bails,
Specs on the touareg dont look right on the website. Ground clearance for example should be 300mm, i have parked both side by side(v10 and R line) and the Rline isnt any less in any case.
It appears vw havent put numbers reflecting extended height..
Does the sdv8 come with 100ltr tank? I like some options LR offer- wade sensing, etc.
also dont think rear diff lock is available and similar to touareg no option to snorkel it.
If i were to buy now i would be contending same confusion. Like for like options Rline is much better value for sure and goes much quicker with a much more spirited ride!

yup nuts .... good luck !!!!

RRS or Cayenne Turbo properly optioned are the only two things out there that I can think of. Fuel economy on both sucks, not sure if I trust the curried RRS yet, and the price on both sucks.

Can you guys get a V8 TDI w/ 4xmotion over there?

#14 ·
Not after fancier but functionality with same sort of get up and go as the R50. Singh has made me take another look at the R-Line , and to be honest I am very attracted to the VAG brand.

#17 ·
From fuel economy perspective i reckon Rline is better than V10 by atleast 25% and more on longer runs in the 8th

#18 ·
Today took spouze to view RRS and fat RR. Dealer had a very low kl. RR WITH BIG DISCOUNT THAT VOT MH ATTENTION.

done deal?

V8 Tdi has gone from the UK.

I think all manufacturers are heading for the Hybrid solution in the performance stakes. When you think that around 200 plus Kilos can be lost for just losing some cylinders and that allows for batteries and light electric motor. Volvo has made the decision that they will only use a 2 litre motor and get the extra performance from electric drive.

Getting back to my Nutty issue, I am going to have one of these for a day , will be interesting to see how it drives. V8 TDi so I am expecting similar performance to the R50.

Interested on your thoughts after you have the RR for a day. I borrowed one for a test drive for a few hours (200kms) and changed my number one preference to the Touareg. It was the V6 RRS... very nice, very comfortable and smooth on road, but didn't like the ergonomics inside and driving position/seat comfort, controls etc. Just a personal preference I guess, but felt like everything worked and fitted better in the Treg. So changed what I had intended to buy and saved some money. Cheers Paul.

Well today I took a RRS SVD8 HSE for a good test drive. Found out the seating position wasn't bad as thought , the seat just needed to be raised and this then made for a great driving position. This car was a 2014 build and a demonstrator with the Dynamic Suspension. The car was supposedly worth $186 K BEFORE ANY DISCOUNTS. Well first off the car handles very well , better than my R50 which isn't to bad on road but is heavier than the RRS. Performance in a straight line didn't feeel better but based on the indicated speed was a little better, but a drag test isn't my thing. Steering was very Sharpe and I liked it . Ambiance and seat comfort were also very nice , it started to remind me of my RR of OLD.

This cars entertainment system was the top range one, and didn't work ! Could not connect my new N5 Galaxy. Also to try out the 23 speaker sound system I thought CD would be best, but again the player gave up the ghost !

Opened the back hatch and water was leaking from the close door switch which indicated that there was leaking into the door itself. When closing the front door there was a rattle from the side mirror I think.

Car lacks a lot of things that come standard in other high end vehicles:-
No Adaptive cruise.
No seat heating front or rear.
No seat memory by key.

Despite the issues I would own one if the build quality has improved from 2014 made.
I am now trying to test drive an R Line, and if I like that then I have to then consider a X6 as this is in the same class ie: SUV without off road purpose.

I've always found the seating of RR much better than any other.
Pardon my biased opinion but the R line will take one further offroad than a beemer and comes better loaded with options too, lastly better value for money, not to mention 0-100 in 5.7secs :)

Here's some thoughts to throw a spanner in if you want off-road ability.

1) wait 18m for the Disco 5 and get the HSE
2) Volvo XC90 hybrid. Goes like stink, different and can go off-road but prob about same capability as Treg
3) LC200 Sahara
4) Merc GL400

Interesting observations on the rrs. In my view they have look and feel sorted better than anyone. The fact that I can't make it across town (let alone a desert as they advertise) without something breaking is what has always held me back from having one as a daily driver.

Also in my opinion, all these quasi autonomous driving and safety features should be part of the base build of any of these high end SUVs.

I agree , Just to add some more options missing that are standard on the R50 , cornering head lamps , split rear door , TPMS . Probably heaps more.

If you look at the invoice that I posted you will notice the huge tax called Lux Car tax that adds to the price of these in AUS. There are better deals than the one I drove and also much later productions.

In answer to Toyota and Volvo suggestions, I've owned many LC's and they are not in the same class as a daily drive. The Volvo hybrid looks interesting but not for me.

Reality is I may do nothing , in no hurry , will need to sell the R50 which will be hard , and perhaps it is the R line that will end up with my vote??

I'm not sure about AUS, but over here RR takes such a giant hit in depreciation that it makes the purchase decision questionable.

#40 ·
Quite a few near new rangies seem to come available as repo's.
BinL has one and mentioned recently that there was another one locally that was about to become available.
He is in the trade and hasn't bought anything brand new for years.
I told him he was dreaming if he thought I would swap mi-eg for a rangie.
I have had a few , and always regret that I sold my last build classic , should have blocked it up under dust sheets in the shed..

I think a lot of people buy RR for the wrong reasons , ie: Status. Me I am interested in the engineering and function. I don't think you can really say that any high end vehicle will hold values over time , ownership is a cost over years if you buy new. Big problem at present is the YR I'd consider more issue free is pretty current so not a lot of used options, which may mean just waiting.

Hi Bails
Have enjoyed this thread thanks for starting it.
Our 2013 4xmotion is approaching end of lease and over the last few months I have been looking around to see what else is out there.
The one thing that bothers me about the current model Tregs is the tow ball limit of 280 Kg. Our 3.5T Van is under that, however I was looking down the road in the event we end up upgrading the Van and end up with a heavier tow ball weight.
Given that I was looking at options with a 350 Kg tow ball weight, the short list ended up being:
Mercedes GL500 but I think it's ugly; and
Range Rover Sport SDV8 HSE Dynamic but I can't see the value in it and a car with a name that long must have identity issues!
If the V8 R-Line had a 350 Kg tow ball weight there would be one heading our way now without a doubt. Meanwhile we plan to purchase our Treg at the end of the lease. It's been good to us and we will continue to give it some lovin'.
Good luck with your decision.

I also think the Benz is on ugly pills , and pretty much have the same thoughts re the Treg, great car and have had lots of good times. I haven't totally rejected the R-line , a drive will tell me that. The RRS might be a regret , I have surfed the RR boards and haven't really seen horror stories more than this site.
As you say the price is another issue, just aligning it with the value proposition is a very difficult equation , and one that makes me need to find a very good new car deal or slightly used to line up.

It is just a statement of how really good the Tregs are that makes the replacement task so hard.

Well I have decided to sell the R50 if any board members are interested let me know.

Still unsure why vw dropped the ball weight from class leading 350.
Wonder whats the technical change from T1/T2
