I sat in a new Touareg at the dealership today and love the steering wheel. I hate the steering wheel in my 2006. My question is, has anyone ever attempted to swap out the steering wheels for either the new Touareg wheel, Cayenne wheel or possibly Audi? I've seen older s4's etc that have swapped in a TT sport steering wheel. I would LOVE to change mine with something 3 spoke.

As long as the functions on the wheel are compatible I don't see a problem other than if you have not worked on air bags, please take it to someone who has. This is not something you want to have explode in your face. Also I doubt the old bag will fit the new wheel so you will need a new airbag to go with it (not cheap) and...

Lastly not sure if the VAG-COM is able to reset an air bag

The Bentley's share a number of parts with the Treg/Phaeton, the steering wheel is one of them, almost all the Bentley switchgear (Dash cluster, kessy) is also shared with the Treg/Phaeton..a CT member did a Bentley steering wheel conversion, you may want to do a search and find it.

Otherwise swap in a Cayenne or Q7 wheel...the wheel hubs are shared.

I thought of swapping mine as well however when I looked at the bentley wheels they are almost identical to the touareg wheels other than the leather looks nicer and the stitching is more fancy. I did not feel it was any more "Sporty". The cayenne wheel is sportier however then it has the Porsche emblem on the airbag which doesn't look right in the treg! I did however swap the Cayenne shift knob into mine since I didn't like the T handle, I like the sportier shifter of the Cayenne...

Sure! It will be a couple days because the treg is getting detailed right now but Ill post it up when I get it back.

I am the one who did the Bentley Continental steering wheel swap... Yes the leather is a little nicer and it is a little thicker, also has thumb grips built in around the spokes. Not a bad upgrade as a plug and play option that reuses the factory airbag.

If using then newer steering wheels as discussed, I would seriously question if the airbag module would be compatible with the different airbags needed.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I'm currently working on installing the T3 steering wheel (or to be precise the Golf R steering wheel, which has the same button layout and st-wheel module) in my T1.

The main problem is not the airbag, which can be very easily solved (the method depends on whether you install single, or double stage airbag) but the st-wheel buttons. Of course you can live with the radio buttons not working (you'll have to make the radio louder on the radio unit), but the thing is that in our T1's the onboard computer (MFD) is also steered through the st-wheel! In T3's it's done by the stalk on the st-wheel column! And it would be shame to loose also the whole MFD, wouldn't it? ;)

I'm currently trying to somehow rework the loom/stw control module/button modules trio to make them work with T1 clockspring. Will report in case of any success...

Unfortunatelly, it is impossible to connect it properly i Touareg Mk.I (to make the buttons work) :( I've tried this many times, in many different ways... :/ I have this st-wheel installed (the steering shaft and bolt is the same in every VW), however with buttons not connected :( So "bye bye" to the MFD setting, radio operating, cruise control operating and few other things, as this is all done by the steering wheel buttons in Touareg Mk.I :(

in this case there is no problem at all! all you need to do is replace the control module inside the Golf R steering wheel with your original one from Touareg 3. it is the same in size and shape. and no need to program anything, as this module (your original) is already programmed to your car :) the car will "think" it is the same steering wheel as always :)

the module i'm talking about is this one in the middle, just under the central openning for the shaft:

Golf R Steering Wheel in T3

Its a little old topic, but I see that its not so simple as explained to switch Steering Wheel. The Golf R yellow connector of Steering Wheel is not the same of T3. I guess you need to change clockspring, too or something like this. I tried once, and couldnt connect...

What about going another route:
- getting a useg Treg wheel
- making it a 3 spokes wheel
- cutting it at the bottom to look sportier
- adding some thumb support
- giving it to an upholstery company for leather cover
I can give it a shot. There are some good deals on old wheels on ebay
What do you think?
