Please help me decide. I need a car to occasionally tow my boat, just under two tonnes and I intend to keep the car for about five years. Am considering plain vanilla standard 150 TDI new or near new. Limited budget.

Went for a long test drive and fell in love. The 8 speed box and Sport auto seem perfect for towing. It ticks all the boxes.

However, I notice a few threads about problems. Are these common or is everything satisfactorily resolved?

Would I be better off with a workhorse like a Prado?

I would appreciate your feedback.

It would be helpful if you stated what has turned you off Touareg. I notice that you drive a 2004 model that was known to have a few problems. It may not be applicable for the later models.

However, if you were shabbily treated by your dealer and VW, it would be handy to know.

I Have had mine for 4 months now. I have had no problems and just love it. Came from a long list of landcruisers with varying levels of satisfaction. The touareg does everything I need with more comfort, safety, better drivers car and the economy is simply unbelievable considering the size of the vehicle. If you don't need low range, and need a safe cruising machine with a bit of towing thrown in, you will be very satisfied with the 150. The current prado is very underpowered in diesel btw. Our other car is mk6 gti and that is 2 years old without any issues too, so as far as I'm concerned, great decision reliabilty wise. Towing wise, the issues in the beginning in regards to parts not being available are long gone.

Obviously alot of people come to these forums for help, so you hear about problems constantly, but I have to say I am very happy with my Touareg. I have an early 05 that I bought in 2010, and I did not do alot of research before purchasing it. After I bought it, I found this forum and got scared from reading all the issues that some have had. But in almost two years, and 17,000 miles, I have had nothing but headlights, battery, and rear hatch struts to deal with. These are all normal maintenance issues.

It is an amazing vehicle and if I could he two in the garage, I would. One V8 and a TDI for long trips. :D

I got mine last April/May, in that time it has been a buzz, down on the local beach it is very civilised, the issues i have had have been--sunroof leaking--clogged drains which VW stripped out and pressure cleaned out before reinstalling. DPF alarms which have been put down to a DPF pressure difference sensor failing. A failing battery which generated wierd issues such as curve headlight errors, wiper errors. Changed the battery and never had so much as a glitch since. One thing i miss of my old Audi S2 is a decent size washer bottle--this one has what seems like 10 sprays and its empty. Its only about 7 liters capacity--My S2 was 12+L and lasted ages.

This will be a very interesting Poll to keep an eye on, As I have not got my Touareg yet I obviously havn't cast a vote however generally speaking no matter what type of vehicle, if you get on to dedicated forums you will see lots of feedback about issues. Rarely have I found that people that have bought a vehicle which does exactly what they expected from it to come on forums and praise it.

Very interested as I have odered a 2012 Silver 4XMotion with Air Suspension, Sports Interior and Area View. One of the deciding factors was the reliablility of my Pirelli Golf which has not missed a beat and dealing with a local dealership that has been very friendly and helpful.

Down side for me is I ordered it 3 weeks ago and it hasn't even been given a production week let alone an estimated delivery Month. If it goes too long I will have to start asking what changes there will be for the 2013 model. :p

I tow a tandem marine trailer with a Trailcraft 6.1 alloy (6.3 loa) with a V6 TDI (as in 550nM). It does a superb tow job with about 2T ATM. Prado not the same with power, handling, safety and overall build, but it is more versatile with space. I'm still not likely to want to swap over to a 150 with 400nM, but it will do the job want with 2T on the ball. Any 2007 V6 TDI onwards should be good value up to about $45 - $55K, low klms with maybe some warranty balance.

From what you write you're in the market for a new or relatively late model Treg so issues that have come up with 04, 05 and 06s are moot (though probably replaced by other issues - AdBlue for the diesels, HU etc.).

As many have stated no vehicle is without it's quirks. We've had a few members who invoked the lemon law and got their money back whilst others got their issues sorted out - eventually. The key word in all of this is - the dealer.

If you buy a new vehicle, try first to find a dealer that actually knows what he's doing. How many Tregs has he sold, can any member on the forum recommend one near where you are etc.

All cars have problems, the key is having someone that can fix it first time and fix it right. Nothing turns someone off more quickly than having spent a fortune on a car to find that in ten days or a month the car is in the shop for weeks.

I own two 2008s, a V6 and a V8 with air suspension. Just wish I had the 8 speed DSG for the rest sure beats anything else out there ( I tow a 7,400 pound trailer).

Caveat emptor

The OP is in Australia so no problems with AdBlue

Must agree with the importance of a good dealer. So far the only bad aspects of my Touareg ownership have been related to how VAG and it's Dealers treat their customers. This goes beyond the fact that they don't know their product, instead of finding answers they prefer to ignore you and hope you go away.

I realize that, I was just giving an example of newer problems that replaced older ones. Which of course ends up with the number one problem: competence at the dealer level to find and correct these problems in an effective manner.

Sadly we're a long way from there...

DPF-- the modern catalytic converter--i remember when cats first came on cars and they were a PITA--fragile, brittle boxes which rattled when broken.

Just to clarify my Minor issues, but resolved by dealer vote...

I had the issues common to other NA 09-10 V6 TDIs. But in pushing mine farther (offroad) than most owners, I went through a few things out of the ordinary. These include a passenger-front axle assembly, AC compressor, and NOx sensor.

That said, all of these were replaced under the OEM or extended warranty. And this work was generally done in a professional manner. That dealer experience doesn't sound like it's been the univeral case for others...

So as has been said before, it's important to have a dealer/shop that knows their stuff. Given that I do, I couldn't be happier with my Treg. :D

very happy with my 150 which I have now had for 3 months. I moved from an as new Audi A4 and although its a completely different car I feel the Touareg is actually a nicer car alround. i dont think you could even compare to the prardo due to the power being alot lower 120kw even on the latest model

Bought ours in July 09 as a 1yr old demo and luuuuuv it. Only a couple of minor issues attended to under warranty. Still very low mileage for it's age as we don't get enough 'play' time yet. Biggest thing it's towed was a Bobcat weighing all up about 2.5t and it really didn't notice it was there. It's pulled a 4t truck sideways out of a ditch and a 3.5t Bobcat out of a boggy dam that was hopelessly stuck axle deep. Being an R50, the only unexpected downsides are cost of tyres in 295 35 x 21 and the potential long term expense of DPF replacement. Insufficient prior research by me really. John

Hi Murraycod,
Great car and my 2008 V6 TDI towed a 2 tonne caravan around Aus. (18,000 km in 12 weeks) beautifully and economically. Just done 96,600 km in three years and 4 mths. Had an issue just resolved by VW although out of warranty.(see thread on intermittent electrical fault) Took them a long time to find the cause but VW paid 100% parts and labour. The reason for the goodwill must have something to do with always having the car serviced by VW. Check that any second hand car has that credit also.
Good luck with your search. We love our Touareg

I bought my Gunmetal 2007 V6 TDI about 6 months ago after researching same year diesel equivalent Prado, BMW X5, and Audi. Touareg offers genuine 4WD with low range unlike 2 of the others - better performance and consumption figures all round. Bought it sight unseen interstate. Drove all day from 5AM until 8PM and jumped out like a gazelle. Very comfortable, with my dodgy back. Immediate use is daily drive and customer visits off-road in the mining industry. Longer term plan is to become a grey nomad and tow a van. I'm completely happy with it but haven't had a service yet. Would appreciate any feedback on a good service shop in Adelaide.

I have no personal knowledge regarding VW service at this stage. I have ordered a new 150TDI but it is not yet delivered.

I will use Solitaire while it is under warranty. Currently I have a Volvo and have been happy with their service. But not cheap.

Nice...that's just the generic/default VW fan reply!

Pushing 25k miles on my "11 Lux...also totally dig it still, especially on longer drives.

VW will have to up the anti on the stock sound next time or offer the upgrade as a stand alone...or I will look harder at the competition.

But engine, driveability, fuel consumption, appearance...stellar.

No real adblue issues here either.
