Thanx Alex. So 8 Australian dollars or 25 US Dollars???? Man our currency has gone to the cats. It may be more advantageous to buy in Australia...

Mine is an ican 10 L pod with an Alemite pump designed for this can.

Guys,

The smart way to do this transmission drain, filter, pan and refill, is to measure out exactly what you catch taken out of the transmission... I agree with the OP on letting it drain for 3 days, then replace it with the exact same amount, plus about 10 to 15% more, bring it up to temp, and drain off the excess.

The refill amount should be pretty standard if you do a complete drain. We've been doing it this way on ultra fussy TDI's with DSG transmissions since 2005 or 6, on new beetles.

I am a person that uses the Febi factory fill on all my VW product, or pentosin.

Link for fluids and stuff for Touaregs here in the USA...

Simple questions?
What size metric is the fill plug?
I read 5/8" but can't be.
Is it 16mm hex key?
I changed my oil and was going to do the transmission fluid and filter. Saw the plug but didn't have a wrench that size. I was going to measure it but forgot till after I was finished.

I am sure it is a giant 17mm set screw.

Ok for the people that have had stripped drain plug threads I think I have a cheap fix
The plug on our Touareg is m24 x 1.5mm so m25 x 1.5mm is the next size up.
The thread depth on 1.5mm is about 1mm so tapping from m24 to m25 is possible, no drilling and easy to tap.
M25 x 1.5 plugs are used on Toyota Land Cruser and has a 24mm hex so no stripping the 10mm socket.
I'm sure these plugs are used on other vehicles and are available in magnetic.

Hi All, I need a bit of advice...A while ago I had my valve body rebuilt and the trans shop used genuine trans fluid when they refilled it, I've never been happy with the way the trans shifts so thought the fluid might be low.
Today I decided to check the fluid level, I did not have a 17mm allen key so I welded a 17mm nut to an old socket and used that, with the engine running in park, i unscrewed the plug. fluid started running out and I paniced and put the plug back in! I drained about 1/3 of a cup of fluid.
Do I need to let it keep draining until it stops?
Was it too hot as I'd just driven it for about 10 mins?
I don't have a Vagcom so how do I get the temp right?

Hey V10
I did my trans and temp of oil is supposed to be at about 31 degs.
Not sure how you will be Able to tell accurately without a vagcom but having done it myself and remember these bits.
The oil when at the right level only drips from the level pipe at checking temp.
But when checking mine at 31 deg, not a lot of difference in oil level from 28 deg to 35 deg.
From a cold start about 20 mins idle was approx temp.
Maybe a rough way would be to use a cheap laser temp gun on the sump pan.
They sell them for 30 bucks some times at shops.

I went through the same thing recently while doing a check. Lost a litre ish but the trannies been running fine.
Two questions relating to this.
With hotter fluid is the level reading higher or lower? First time I topped up I had the car running the hole process.
And secondly how with vagcom can you check the temp? I presume when the magic number is found you turn off the car??
I need to sort my levels and want to get it rite this time.

Automatic Transmission Fluid temperature needs to be within a specified range when checking the fluid level. See your Factory Repair Manual for the range for your vehicle.

[Select]
[02 - Auto Trans]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Set group to "005" (May be group 002 or 004 in some vehicles - again check the Repair Manual).
[Go!]
The value in field 1 should be ATF temp in °C.

So does anyone know what the proper torque is for the bolts holding the transmission pan in place?
Apparently, the torque spec is 8 NM(~6 ft-lbs) -- tighten in diagonal sequence and in stages.

That's what someone had posted in another thread, anyway. I thought it seemed a bit low, but there are 16 bolts...

Transmission Fluid Change

After reading a lot of the posts i've decided to get a service done by a local workshop.
They quoted $380, full service changing all the oil, filters, diagnosis etc.
Vehicle is a 7L MY08 V6.
I'll let you know of any surprises..........

That's great price.
Ask them specifically how do they intend to get the old fluid out of the torque convertor and residual in the transmission as per their change all the oil ?

Also specifically what fluid are they using as a replacement?

Asked the owner and looks like not all the oil will be changed, he said they will fill and drain it until the oil is clean?
My concern now is that clean to them may not be clean to me.
They use Gulf Western, full synthetic.
