Its apparent that the version has something to do with, the latest versions, firmware has no problem and updates first time everytime

Why is it so touchy, makes no sense. Has anybody tried several times and suddenly its started, with the same card, which would suggest a touchy reader and or software. Or has it never started with a particular card, which would suggest a faulty card. I tried today with a micro sd card in an adaptor and then the same software in a usb stick (usb1) no joy with either????.o_O:cry::LOL::sick:
The fact that multiple vehicles in a small cohort are having issues suggests there is not a problem with the individual vehicle but something systemic.

I agree there's a systemic issue here.

Mine's now fully updated... but in the interests of sharing info that may give others a boost / food for thought, I'll go through where I started and what I saw.

Long post...

Starting position
Firmware: 2828 (old)
Maps: 2021.3 (old)

Map attempt #1
Created SD card (exFAT) with the two folders and nothing else.
Write-protect switch set (dunno if this matters).
Put SD card in car.
Car sees SD card and says it's updating.
Went to Menu / System Information / update software.
Stayed at 0% forever.
Tried NTFS instead. Same story.
Gave up.

Weirdness #1
Took the SD card out.
Went to Menu/System Information/Update software.
It didn't complain that there was no SD card... just went to 0% and stayed there.
In other words, exactly the same outcome whether there was a card inserted or not.
Weird... beginning to suspect my SD card reader.

Hmmm... #1
At this point I was stuck and didn't know what to do.
I had firmware 2838 but hadn't had the guts to attempt the update...

Firmware update attempt #1
Put the car on charge.
Got a large glass of neat rum and contemplated what could possibly go wrong.
Put firmware 2838 on the SD card and put the card in the slot.
Pressed and held 'menu' until the "service mode" menu appeared.
Took a deep breath and pressed "Software update/versions".
Unit rebooted into red engineering menu.
Panicked because the touch screen didn't work.
Relaxed when I realised you use the volume knob in the centre console to navigate.
Clicked on "Update".
SD1, SD2 and USB listed... all greyed out. None of them selectable.
Bailed on this attempt and rebooted to normal mode.

Hmmm... #2
The fact that I saw "USB" listed in the engineering menu made me wonder if that'd work for the firmware.
Time to dig out the USB SD card reader.

Firmware update attempt #2
Put the same firmware SD card in the USB reader.
USB reader in the USB port under the armrest.
Engineering menu, clicked on "Update"
SD1 and SD2 greyed out... USB in white! Woohoo!
Clicked that, it read the manifest... scroll through to see what it's going to do.
Right to the bottom, clicked update again and sat back and watched, hoping it wasn't going to brick my car.
Update completed successfully to 2838.

This works fine, but it'll throw a DTC in 5F.
To correct it: Summary of VAG-COM tweaks for the CR Touareg 2019 onwards

Position at this point
Firmware: 2838 (new)
Maps: 2021.3 (old)

Hmmm... #3
...Wonder if I can update the maps via USB instead?

Map attempt #2
SD card with maps on inserted into USB reader (same card as attempted above).
USB reader put into port under armrest.
Maps updated normally.

Hmmm... #4
...Would maps have worked via USB before the firmware update? We'll never know.

Position
Firmware: 2838 (new)
Maps: 2022.1 (new)

Hmmm... #5
Wonder if the map update would work via SD card (not USB) now?
Push map SD card into reader.
Finds maps and offers to update them.
Cancelled out because I'd already updated them...
...but interesting that all of a sudden the SD card map update is working again.

Hmmm... #6
Now that the SD card slot seems to be working again, I wonder if the engineering menu can see it (for the firmware update)
Inserted SD card.
Went to red engineering menu.
SD card is now white and selectable (it wasn't in firmware attempt #1 above).

All of that stuff may or may not be useful. But it's very weird how a) USB worked when SD didn't, and b) SD now seems to be happy again.

I am convinced it is a hardware issue, only taking on A/B units.

You may well be right, but, my first map upgrade, several months ago was in usb1(under armrest) eventually worked. 2nd upgrade , refused to work in usb1, tried in sd card, would`nt work for me. went to dealer, he d/l his own copy to sd card, worked. I am trying recent upgrade. says no data found in sd and usb.
If it was hardware( I have the early unit) then usb1 would be intermittent. I have a usb stick full of music, which works perfectly in usb1. So the firmware in the the early unit can read what sort of software is in usb1( mp3), why can`t it read the map software??

And then we have some owners of earlier models, versions who haven't had a problem at all. Quite strange indeed, nonetheless the experience could be better.

These days it's the electronics which more so cause issues for manufacturers and owners rather than mechanical problems...

One topic that still could be explained in this thread is how to get the Traffic Report screen operating. The questions have been asked but I would still like an answer, if anyone can help. Thanks.

Hi mate, fairly straightforward, once enabled(via vcds or obdeleven) you can see the reports inc relevant information ie accident, traffic speeds at the location, etc
Visually, it provides the roads in red where there is heavy traffic, accompanied by a triangle that illustrates type of incident etc
When you are in full map screen you can click on the TMC reports icon and it will bring up all the reports in the vicinity and update them as you go.
Hope this helps?

If you're wanting to know how to get it working, see post 26 in this thread

Worth noting though that it didn't work for me until i upgraded firmware from 2828 to 2838. I also put the latest maps in (2022.1) but I think it more likely it was the firmware that helped it work.

Sometimes takes a little while after startup for it to start showing traffic. Seems to vary between almost instant to 5 mins or so.

Thanks Singh and Vne. I must have missed it in the discussions. Looks like the first thing I need to do is to upgrade the software from the original, which the dealer wouldn't do because I had no issues flagged. Is Ross-tech still the best option for vcds, rather than OBD11?

Either will do the job. Just be sure to have your bonnet popped or the vcds/obdeleven changes may not save.

Give it a go before updating the firmware, you never know it might work. If not it's easy enough to update the firmware, just shout if you need instructions etc.

Just thought I'd add my experience with the map updates. My Launch edition is on the original software and my 2022.1 map updates went through without any problems. I don't know whether that is in line with anyone else's experience or is it yet another anomaly!

You are the second person, owner I know of who hasn't had a problem with my 2019, most others have experienced an issue, so there's more to just the my19/20 vs newer models

Yep. Lots of variables - hardware version, firmware version, whether it's a Tuesday in a month ending with 'ary' or not...
@Steve104 try enabling traffic. I know of another forum member with a MY19, older firmware, new maps and working traffic.

All I know is that
1. My car was delivered 18 months ago with firmware 2828. Traffic has never worked even with TMC set to 1024 etc, to which it's been set for over a year. Suddenly works now I'm on 2838.
2. I did a map update last year (installed maps 2021.3 while still on 2828) without issue. But it wouldn't take the latest maps (2022.1) until I upgraded the firmware a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe I'll start a spreadsheet so we can capture users' hardware, firmware, map version and success (or not). Then maybe we can start seeing a pattern...

I asked earlier in the thread for folks to provide some of these details, and there are some there to start with.
Agree, it would then reveal where the issue could be

Ok... google spreadsheet here.

@Malaudi, @mikereinc, @Wayne888, @Steve104, @Imor2624, @evaddirb, @Singh - I've added lines for you based upon what you've posted in this thread. There are blanks. Apologies if I've missed anything.

Anyone else - please add lines if you're so inclined! (treg T5/CR only pls)

With a limited dataset, what we can see so far...
1. it is possible to get the latest maps uploaded to 'older' launch edition hardware (760035067).
2. We've got evidence that it works on older firmware (2677).
3. Appears to be evidence that cars with the same hardware and firmware have differing results.

Have you tried the latest June update?
