Steering Wheel buttons

I am a noob so forgive me for sounding stupid. Last week I bought my wide a 2005 V8. It has a few issues to fix (seems like the standard stuff from what I have read, running gear fault and some speakers that don't work). There are 2 buttons on the back of the steering wheel. The one on the right appears to activate the heated steering wheel, at least that is what the icon on the dash indicates. What does the one on the left do? I have owned nice cars, but never on with so many "toys". I love it and I hope that with the help of everyone here I can ge them all figured out.

Yeah....it's a decoy button on mine. I was near bringing it in for service under warranty until I found that having the button didn't mean the option was included. It was info found here that saved me from being the butt of service departments jokes.

I've read that there was a full cold weather package that had rear heated seats and an auxillary cabin heater powered by engine fuel. In that kit I would guess that the heated wheel would be included. I haven't found where it may have been a single option outside of a package. When I got my Touareg 3 months ago, I was seaching too because I thought I might have the feature. Another reference I found to something heated was the front windshield. There appears to be references to it in the control module listing but I can't find any actual option like that in any package. That would be a feature I'd really like. My Land Rover has it and it's outstanding! Maybe the Touareg listing is really for the heated windshield washer fluid.

Mine came with the cold weather pack which includes heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and heated nozzles/mirrors...no aux heater that I know of except for the webasto in the V10s, diesels need the aux heat...gas ones don't. Diesels take forever to warm up in cold weather.

Yeah, that's probably the V10 with the aux heater. It was something I came across in an obscure Touareg review one time and it didn't say whether it was a gas or diesel option. Thanks for clearing that up.

I own a 2005 V8 with the heated steering wheel. Also have the front and rear heated seats, but not the 4-zone climate control.

If the outside temperature sensor reads 50 degrees or colder, a white icon and text appears in the middle color display in the instrument panel when you start the car, telling you the heated wheel is off. Pushing the side button on the wheel turns the heat on. When it's on, the white icon turns green and it says something like "heated steering wheel on." But you can't activate the heated wheel when the exterior temp is over 50 degrees nor do you see the white ("off") icon & text if over 50 degrees.

I have the cold weather package, including aux heater, front/rear heated seats, heated mirrors/nozzles, 4 zone climatronic. I don't think that I have the heated steering wheel. Should I?

I have an 04 v8, it has the cold weather package: heated steering wheel, rear seats, washers/mirrors. No 4-zone climate control for the rear though.

Me either. But the two of us in the car are happy with the same temp setting up front. And when we have had friends in the backseat, they like either the air same as us up front, or they're smiling big time :D with the seat heaters in the winter.

Makes sense the (one) dealer in AK didn't order it the second hand one I bought with the winter package - guess he was selling it in Anchorage not Fairbanks... and ya wonder why I don't set foot inside a dealer...

Re-reading this post, I have an 08 V8 that has 4 zone air, heated seats etc... but no heated steering. As it seems there's a whole set of combinations that would include heated steering what is the code that would tell you you have one?

Just wondering whether it could have been disabled on mine...?

Being an 08 you could have possibly anything. There was even some V10's with no heated wheel. I did not seem to matter what packages you had apparently. VWoA apparently had a lot to do with that seeing as how my 2010 has a heated wheel but no power folding mirror, seat memory or auto dimming side mirrors. Features I miss from my 04.

As I said above, things changed starting in 08. So there is no rhyme or reason as to what comes with what.
Winter package could have been what it came with in your year, but not holding true in the newer ones.

Right Yeti, as I have the folding mirrors and about every conceivable option except the lane drift, TV.

Guess there's no harm in "enabling" it from the myriad of choices available in the VAG-COM - assuming I can remember where it was I saw it

There is more to it then just enabling it. You need the wheel and clock spring to make it fully functional. There may be a module to add to, I am not postive on that part. It is not like they just shipped with the option disabled.

I realize that, I just meant that should they (the dealer in Florida) have disabled it (why? I wouldn't know any more than the morons where I bought the car {dealer in MA} didn't bother to check that 2 out of 3 keys were inop) it wouldn't hurt to enable the functionality in VAG-COM. Meaning if I did enable it and they had not installed it it wouldn't destroy the warp core.

OK, I tried to enable the heated function but it won't let you as it's dependent on which module you have. Thus when it checks that you enabled it needs a certain module to accept the code.

No harm done as it simply won't accept the input.

We have heated steering wheel...and the side mirrors are heated (defrost)....memory seats front & back seats heat , this thing even has puch button start...so I guess its a cold weather order from the orginal owner its an 08 and we got when it had 20.234 miles on it. funny thing we find some it has just about every time we get in it...lol

Heck, were not sure if it has the 4 zone cold weather package or not..it might not have that?..but just tinkering with it reading the manual, it has the heated steering wheel and the seats heat, has that 4 position wheel you can turn up 4 being on high heat...sure feels good tho it has push button start and a lot of other things we have not found yet were still looking for the ''kitchen sink''......but your right we don't hardly have any frezzing weather..it got down to 10 a few nights ago temp 17 wind chill was 10 but most of the time the weather is not that cold...& why this Touareg ended up here in North Tx is beyound us.
but we like all the fetures this Touareg has rather or not we use them... there there.
