Hey all!

I am going to be the proud owner of an 08 Treg V6TDI! Would have got the V10, but VW aren't marketing the unit in India, so won't get support and that = BAD!!

Anyway, I have opted for the solar sunroof, but have a few reservations regarding its:

1) Effectiveness (does it really help keep the car cool??)
2) Lifespan (won't the system/aircon/blower/other components have a short life, considering constant use?!)

Just a reservations i couldn't satisfy without finding a review (of the system)...

Also, Have ordered the Dynaudio system (wRNS510DVD), and couldn't really find a full review of that either, but lots of good things people mention about it in passing!!

Let me know if anyone actually has first hand experience with either?!

thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Neil

None of us here in the US have any of those options available to us, so reviews on them are going to be none. We won't get the V6TDI until next year. You would have to get someone over in Europe to fill you in on those details.

Oh? My bad i guess...

Sorry.. I didnt realise that the V6TDI was the only Touareg to have the options - Dynaudio, and Solar Sunroof? - its surprising to hear that you dont have the options available on US spec touaregs!?

I guess I will have to wait and watch and put up a review of my own once i get the car?!

cheers for replying though...

It may be options for the other Tregs as well, it is just that we don't have the V6TDI or your version of the Dynaudio radio available to us here in the US. I don't know about the sunroof. You will have more US people on this forum generally then people from your country. We are patiently awaiting the arrival of the V6TDI here though, since the V10 will no longer be available here in the states. I know I want one as well!! :)

VWoA has told me the Solar Sunroof will not be coming to the United States.

The Solar Sunroof supplies power to the vehicle that can activate fans inside the vehicle in the summer time to help keep the interior cool. It also acts as a trickle charger to keep the battery juiced up when the vehicle is sitting in the sun. It can also help keep the battery from going dead if you're outside and have the sound system blasting away.

This is what is looks like:

@ TREGinginCO

Oh... Is that an actual solar sunroof on a touareg?! Cool if it is... also, are you sure that the sunroof has the ability to charge the battery as well - not just power the car blower? - because that is what i was led to believe (which didn't make sense to be honest - i had the same original thoughts as you.. until told otherwise)

The thing is - i can't find any real literature about the actual one that will be fitted on my Treg... even on the UK websites - unless im being really daft about something and missing it completely...

@ Yeti

Glad to hear you want one too!! - shows it is a good car... am rather dissapointed it cant be ordered with DSG (the new gearbox!!) and i know that i risk the fact that they may update all models within a year to the new system!?!? but hey... we cant win them all...

I want one, TREGinginCO wants one, Vegas Matt wants one, the list goes on!! :) Just we have to wait for about a year to make it reality. :(

Thanks for the info!

Why the heck would they not bring this to this corner of the world? that's the best feature ever! :)
Same reason they put the Webasto heater in the V10 standard but do not offer the Euro controls that allow it to heat the vehicle while not running.

Because it is VWOA!](*,)

The solar sun roof allows the vehicle's internal temp to be maintained at your desired settings. Works well with the heating controls but with the A/C on not as good as the vehicle running under engine power, still allows the interior to cool down better than leaving the windows down. ;)
The solar power runs the temp controls and any additional power is trickled into the vehicles batteries, but not a constant charge.

The big dislike I have with solar roofs are you can not see through them, you need to open the "hole" the look through. This is because the glass is coated with the solar elements to enable the power to be gathered. I am a big fan of having the glass closed and having the sky visible while driving along.

The Dynaudio system is really an improvement in the speaker setup. The head unit, in your case the new RNS 510, is basically the same with all those fitted.
I am interested on how good your mapping will be for the Sub Continent as far as your GPS nav goes. Also ask the availablity of updated maps as this may be a problem in a few years time.

You will love the V6 TDI good the see the Americans having to wait until the rest of us has them to play with first.:)

@flipper dog
I am in India - so DVD maps are out of the question as for now!! of the whole system is a bit of a silly expense, but for the ability to view the backup cam!! (and possibly a map release for India in a few years time)

@all_americans
I am in india - no VW touareg here officially - am actually placing an order direct with VW Germany, and a lot of the options i want are not for that (indian) market!?!?!?!, and i said then that my money is not for VW - they soon turned around, and let me have my spec... guess they want indian business?!?

Well that explains why you are able to option up your Touareg in India.

The RNS 510 is most likely worth it alone just for the audio package, MP3 and SD card inputs. Pitty you can not use the GPS as no one knows of after market map suppliers yet. :(

Oh since we are on the topic of my car... I got this for asthetics

Galapagos exterior - with front and rear underguards in same colour or black
Black roof rails
Rodeo (red) and Anthracite (black) individual interior (individual series - this cost me approx 7000USD!!!)
and Ayers Rock 20" wheels

any opinions/reviews?

Nice options. I love the Ayers Rock wheels however be careful on the rubber you get. Being Euro spec they may not hold up too well to your climate and those "roads" you have over there. I would look at a smaller size wheel, say 18", for getting around out of town.

How will you get on for servicing in India? I don't think anyone on this forum is totally happy on the service provided to Touaregs by Volkswagen regardless which country they are in. At lease you are getting the V6 TDI which is released in India, so you maybe lucky with Volkswagen India only having the Touareg and Passat they should treat you like customer should be treated. ;)

Good luck with the vehicle and WE WANT PHOTOS PLEASE. :D

The reason VW cited for not bringing the Solar Sunroof to the U.S is... because customers here in the U.S. want to look through the glass and see the sky. With the solar sunroof, to see the sky you have to actually open the roof and VW doesn't see Americans as willing to make that concession.

The V6TDI that VW sent to me a couple of years ago... in Euro spec... had the roof. You can see my review here: VWvortex Forums: FIRST U.S. Review: TOUAREG V6TDI

I used to be one of those people, but the sun is way too intense out here to have the shade open; it just cooks you. Mainly, the only time I open the thing is when cruising at night, or when I'm at least on the shady side of the car.

I still think that regardless of where you are, if you are special ordering your vehicle from a manufacturer, you should have your choice of ANY options that are available on that vehicle, not just ones that are arbitrarily restricted by your locale. Or, even worse, restricted by damn option packages that make you spend $5000 for the $700 bundled option you want. Obviously, safety/traffic/emission law items, as crappy as some of them are, need to stay the same, but things like solar sunroofs, Individual options, etc that are available elsewhere should be available for custom ordering. Just make the ordering person aware that if something happens to one of those items (damaged/failure, etc) replacements are coming from out of the country, as they are not locally stocked.

Photos will do once it arrives = 2mths from now!

The duty rate in india is approx 130% (net on-the-road), so for a car invoiced at 50,000 USD, I have to pay around 115,000 USD!!! So As you can imagine, there will be very very few customers, and therefore servicing should be their top priority - one because of the segment they cater to, two because of the small customer base...

Same import tax issues here but my 09 V6 TDi will cost a total of USD 135,000 USD to bring in and put on the road. I am looking at importing it on my own.

NR55, you may want to look and check with Germany as to whether you need to order the "hot country unit" from Germany. 2 main differences. The glue used on the dask board is a different type, if you import a unit destined for a cold country after 4 years the glue will not hold up from the intense heat over those 4 years and the dashboard inserts will just start peeling off. Also a hot country unit will include a 2nd smaller radiator, not a real problem but the car will run a few degrees hotter. I got this info direct from the CEO of VW Indonesia who he himself is a Touareg fanatic...........

Hey Jakarta,

Thanks for the feedback! I have infact got my Treg!! And am mighty pleased with it!! (baring a few forgotten options, but they will be sorting that out soon enough...) I haven't really figured out the solar sunroof yet, and to be honest, it doesn't seem all that effective or well designed! - wanted to get a feel for the car before i posted on here though.... pics will follow jus as soon as the weekend comes! (he says!!! ;-)

Cheers.
