Royal Purple of Mobil1? (and cold weather prep)

I'm winterizing my vehicles in preparation for the cold. I run Royal Purple 5-30w or 0-30 when I can find it. Any preference here?

They have to be VW specific since they recommend only a certain type of synthetic to go in their engines. If either of those two meet the specs, then you can use them.

I knew that, but as I don't have a VW dealer and have never had any problems with either RP or Mobil1... has no one ever used either of these???? I need to use what I have at hand as I'm not exactly off Santa Monica Blvd. here

Thanx

I don't mean to be contrary here, but "approved" meaning if I run RP it'll ruin the bearings or just that they didn't bother testing others? I'll see if I can find any Mobil1 5-30w. As I can't be importing oil, I'll run RP 0-30 which runs great on my other vehicles here 100 miles from the arctic circle. Thanx!

"Ruin the bearings" -- nah. Approved just means Royal Purple did not go through the time and expense of obtaining VW's (read Porsche's now) royal seal of approval (pun intended;)). The smaller manufactures don't play the game, like Red Line, whose gear lubes are preferred by many Porsche owner's over Mobil and Porsche's own label.

Off thread, but what tires are you going to run on the Treg this winter?

DenverBill:

What I thought, thx. I got a couple of cases of Mobil1 5-30w but couldn't find a Mobil1 filter. They wanted like 23 bucks plus 4 dollars shipping for a Bosch. What do most people run here? The K&N was 20 bucks.

Tires? Who needs tires on a T????? Just kidding. I'd like to run Blizzaks as most people do since I"m not keen on re-treads like Green Diamond. What do you suggest. I have Dunlops on now which I never cared in either my past Porsches or BMWs...

Nokians are about the best winter tires you can get. I live in snowy state as well and roll the WR SUV's on mine all year round. If you want a true snow tire then the Nokian Hakka's with studs. They are not cheap but they are really good tires.

Mobil 1 5w30 is not on the VW approved oil list. Mobil 1 0w-40 is on the list. Here is a link to the VW approved oil list Marty referred to above. (It's a PDF)

For filters, I'd get the real VW filters through 1stvwparts.com, as long as they don't kill you on shipping.

Matt

Edit to add: I noticed there is a Mobil 1 Arctic 0w-40 available. Maybe this will help in your chilly climate?

Yeti: studs are too much of a headache as you are limited in their use. Come a certain day they must be off. Trouble is mother nature has a way of saying, ya know, I think I'll create a blizard in June. So any other tires from Nokia or other than are not studded?

Mike, the NAPA store, yep, they're real friendly until you need the RIGHT part. They sent me 4 pinion seals that didn't fit until I had to order it from the lower 48s. A bummer when you're sitting with the shaft off all day for a job you told folks you'd just be a tad late in to work. But hey it's that way all over nowadays alas.

Thanx Depiry for the heads up. I'm a wee bit weary as to what they recommend as what they (whomever they are) don't seem to understand what it is living up here. The recommendation normally covers 99.999999% of the drivers, but occasionally someone like me comes along who doesn't live in average Deutschland or whatever and we use what works here - because it works up here. So dealing with 50s below for a few months and 30 below when we run our dogs (the start of the Yukon Quest 1000 mile race between Fairbanks and Whitehorse in the Canadian Yukon) clocked a -53F at the start gate. I was there, it was time close the windows

VegasMatt, thanx but alas no 0-40w in Mobil1. so since I run RP 5-30w and 75-90 in the diffs with ATF+4 in the transfer on my D it should hold up. I'll ping the store in the morn to try and get the filter as 27 bucks with shipping for an oil filter...

I only brought up the studdability of the Hakkas given your situation. If you can get by with just an all season then the Nokian WR SUV tires are damn good as well. I have no problems getting up the snow covered roads to canyons here in UT during ski season. You don't have to put studs on the Hakkas.

Get the Nokian Hakka 5 SUVs..best winter tire I've ever driven on, and they work perfectly on the Touareg...I ran them this winter (no studs), perfect performance on snow (powder and hardpacked) and ice....The Finns know how to make a snow tire!

Thank you kindly for the pointer. Now you'll realize what I face... the closest dealer is 210 miles away in Wasilla...

I'll give them a call and see how much they'll charge for shipping...

As to the oil filter, the "VW Parts" - "Volkswagen Parts" - Parts and Accessories Catalog. doesn't even list 2008s yet. I'll give them a call during the week.

Thank you again, great forum!

The SUV 245x65x17 or 255x60x17 were priced at 249, the S was priced at 304.

Nokian does not make a 255/60/17 for that is the reason I went with the 245/65/17. The speedo will be one mph slower with that size. It is closer then the stock size though which puts it off by I think 5 mph. If you get the Nokians you will not be disappointed.

My OEM tires are 275/45/R19 which is a 28.8" diam

I was going to put on 245/70/17 which is liek 30.5. other then the speedo reading slightly slower, will anything else be messed up? WIll it pull or have any other negative effects?

#21 ·
You're quite right, it was a typo. I meant 245x65x17.

In any case I'm not driving near 500 miles to put 300 dollar tires on as for shipping the cost is not an option.

As with everything else here at the edge of the known universe we'll work with what we got and what works. I have no doubt the Nokian are excellent tires but it is what it is. So I've picked up a set off Blizzaks (didn't want to go with the Green Diamond retreads).

I then thought I could save time in the long run by getting a spare set of rims so when Mother hits, I can change tires in my garage. Forgot about the TPMS... how much would a spare set cost I can leave on the winter tires? The lone VW dealer left us a while back and thus ...

Well given the unpredictability of the weather and seeing as they had 4 Blizzaks left I went for them. I really would have liked to try the Nokian but 420 miles round trip just wasn't in the cards.

As an aside Strmdr81, perhaps a group buy would be in the offing? I'd certainly be interested. What are the rules and regs on this forum for this?

On some of the forums you need the blessing of the BOD on others you don't. As I didn't want to ruffle any feathers I thought I'd ask what the proc is. Depending on how many folks would be interested, I'm sure we could get a deal...

G12? Is that the red stuff (vs the old green)? Who sells that stuff? We run normally 80% antifreeze and I'm taking it in on friday to have it winterized (engine block heater, radiator, tranny and oil pan heater) so any pointers gratefully accepted as to who sells G12 as I've never heard of that. Also what's the capacity as if they remove the engine block plug I might as well refill 80-20.

TIA
