It is supposed to, I personally never tried that out since I don't upload music to mine at all and listen to Sirius all the time.

Well that's my story in a way, as I use only the Ipod and haven't had a need for the SD card. Although I do have one in the slot that can be used if the Ipod freeze. So it would be nice to have one that can hold more than a couple of cd's worth of music.

Yes I do have RVC and it sometimes delays engaging but not to a noticeable
degree.
I was curious as to any other bugs other than the RVC issue with upgrading
the software? This seems to be the only one I ever hear about. Also does the upgrade really allow more than a 2gig sd card to be used or is that only true for a specific RNS 510 version? mine being a 7L6035684B with an H02 HW-Version.
Yes later firmware support larger SD cards, I am currently running a 32gB card with out issues. I am currently working with josi from GPSUnderground/VW Navi and Yeti to develop a software fix for NAR models.

If we can modify the latest version Firmware for ALL NAR RNS510 units, the enhanced features will be similar to the list for the EURO 5238 Firmware..

Voice Control (requires microphone Connection for voice control)
NEW DAB+ Support (from 5xxx) requires supported hardware
NEW DAB Support (from 4xxx) requires supported hardware
NEW Radio Text (from 4xxx)
NEW Faster navigation and user interface
NEW Automatic illumination control
NEW Enhanced destination input
NEW hold down the setup button for 30 seconds and get the following menus: FM, AM and the new VERSION INFO (map version and type, hw and sw versions)
NEW Compass
NEW POI- see Volkswagen RNS 510 Maps POI – New Features with firmware 3xxx
NEW Languages – Arabic, Russian, Turkish and Polish
Speed Limit Display
Stability Improvements
Faster Startup (from 2720 onwards)
Display OPS and RVC at the same time - required CAN BUS mod on earlier units
SDHC 32 GB Support (HW04 and above)
Display Off on extras tab
Climatronic control if appropriate climatronic fitted
Clock display if RNS 510 switched off
Excluded roads (under route options)
GPS coordinates entry
Additional adjustments for video
Larger RVC screen with transparent menus at the side

Combine this with a stable RVC system and I think there will be a number of happy NAR (North American ) Touareg RNS510 owners out there.

Wish us luck, and hopefully in a few month from now we may have some good news.

Keeping my fingers crossed...

Five weeks of testing and not a single Camera failure.....
HI Stuart, finally got round to doing the FW update and Gateway downgrade last weekend and so far so good. All features working and no RC hiccups yet. Bit early to say it's perfect but looking promising. John

haven't had a failure on mine since installation last year.

For the information of our Friends In North America, the software developer josi, who developed this patch has now made a modified version of the latest RNS510 NAR Firmware to bring all your Touaregs up to date.

However we have a sticking point. He needs to test the firmware on a physical machine before he releases it for field testing. This is to ensure he has not created a Firmware Bomb that will "brick" your units. This was not an issue for ROW users because he has the appropriate hardware.

If there is anybody on the Forum who has access to an RNS510 that could be used as a test bed, then we (josi) will be able to publish the very latest firmware including an even newer RVC patch, which would be able to be used to bring all NAR (USA/Canada) units up to the current standards.
At present the can only be provided for ROW units.

I know this is a BIG call, however the benefits it brings are significant.

If anybody has an ability to assist with this roadblock, then I would appreciate a PM.

Other than final lab testing the Firmware is just about ready to release and will be applicable to ALL RNS510 Hardware versions including "A" models.

Stuart...

Wow, I'd really like the new features, but I can't afford to replace a bricked unit right now. Hopefully someone has a spare one they could "sacrifice" for the good of the many owners out there.

Does josi know if these can be hard brick recovered? Is it easy to reset them? They must run on Linux or Windows CE or something similar.

Josi has a custom recover disk which will revive almost all instances when a "bricked" unit will fail to boot. The only exception is if the event results in physical component damage which is a rebuild/replace. In most instances the OS ( which I believe to be linux, but don't quote me) develops a boot strap load failure due to a firmware write error. His recovery disk forces the unit back into it software/firmware load state so it can reread from the CD/DVD.

I have had to use it once and it works very effectively.

My challenge is to find a "spare" NAR unit which we (josi) can use to develop and recut the newer code to be safely backward compatible with these units. He had done all the hard work of recoding but cannot validate it without a "test bed". And rightly so, he is reluctant to take a punt, and distribute un tested firmware.. unlike some vendors I can think of.

So at this stage we a very close to making numerous North American Touareg owners very happy RNS510 owners.......but it is just out of reach.

Seriously, it is a big ask, but if somebody is in a position to assist, the results would be excellent. I know how much better my EU/AU unit is with he new firmware, backed by an SSD replacing the HDD. This was my motivation to ask Josi to cut the required code. But we can't go any further at the moment.

I have not given up yet, and have another line of enquiry running.. some where we will get a solution.

Further on the initial topic rather than the NA units, I have noticed that the response time of the reversing camera is greatly improved as well especially on start up. Nice bonus. Still no fails on reverse. John

I greatly appreciate both your efforts! I'm very excited about the potential new features. Very subscribed here!

Big thank you to Stuart Hedditch,
Done my roll back and gateway mod as well as install the new maps and the camera has not missed a beat yet and I have tested it loads.
Really appreciate your help
Graham

Thanks Graham.
My only challenge now is to work out how I can get this benefit to our US and Canadian brothers..

My friend has a 2014 Golf R with similar issue, he installed a VAG Bluetooth module a while ago and had intermittent camera issues---in an attempt he loaned my patch and now his camera does not work. I'll get him to come round, stick my VAG-Com on and see what his particulars are.
Cheers

Graham,

This is NOT good.!!!

The Reversing Camera Patch is totally incompatible with anything other than the Touareg Camera Controller and the Touareg CAN Gateway module. This is NOT a good move. Hopefully it has not become a Vegetable!

You will need to do a Firmware reload with the correct Gateway module for that vehicle. Loading the 5238 Firmware may not be the best for that hardware. Check with VCDS to see what hardware version the RNS510 is and that will tell you what should be loaded.

One Final BUMP

For my North American fellow Touareg owners ....... This is my last plea for assistance, as it is only of benefit to NOR RNS510 owners...

Please read my post #56.

We have the code already prepared to go, but cannot release it unless we can do some bench testing....without a machine to use it is a "dead duck".

I live in hope....but won't hold my breath...!

Stuart...

Fingers and toes crossed

Any update? I'm sick of my reverse camera not coming on when I need it most!

Unless someone is either going to step up and become a test mule or provide a unit just for bench testing, it won't go any further. The NA units are different from ROW. These units when found are still expensive. Wish we could locate one from a salvage car.
