I dont know if this is a problem or not,

Yesterday morning when I started the T-Reg there was a descending symbol on the top portion of the MFI (a slope with a T-reg going down). No audible warning, just the picture. The car was parked in a nearly flat parking spot, the same spot I have been parking in for the last 4 days and it never appeared before.

I drove the car around the corner (onto an even flatter land) and the symbol didnt go away. So i shut the car and restarted and it didnt come back.

Anyone know what that symbol signifies, what does it change in the car? I've gone down so serious slopes and never seen the symbol before.

I'm still on my NorthEast road-trip, currently in Fairfax, and some real kickass pictures which I will post alongwith a full report once I get back to Boston.

Thanks,
SSP.

Oh oh! I hate to say this SSP, but methinks you have a bad stepper motor. I believe the symbol you're seeing is the "Hill Descent Brakeshop Fault" warning. Check this thread for more:

Hopefully I'm wrong, but if not, get it looked at and with luck it will get resolved.

I sure do hope youre wrong Ksand22 :anger: , I read the link, I didnt have the workshop warning OR the triangle light up, just the hill descending symbol, thats why I didnt feel it was a problem, but I will keep an eye out for it.

Thanks!

Ksand22, it seems (unfortunately) that you were right. I need to change my post on the 3000mile trip also. The stepper motor seems to be acting up. Today i got the descent symbol AND abs AND the triangle AND "Brake Assist Workshop" warning. a Restart got rid of the warnings, but 2nd time, so I guess its crapping out slowly. :anger:

Spoke with Ralph at Minuteman, said that It wont break down on me, and I should be fine till Monday (I was already scheduled to take it in for the OnStar error).

Will post again once I get some more info.

Does anyone have pictures of the warning message?

Sorry to hear it, SSP. One time I wouldn't have minded being wrong! Anyway, the fine folks over at Minuteman should take care of it and get it good as new for you.

What was your mileage when this showed up? What does your VIN# end with? Worried... [-o<
7,000 miles. 2004 V6 bought in Feb'05
VIN - xxxx049308. Does that mean 2004 model 9,308th one produced?

No, the 49,308th made in 2004, unless they skipped numbers. Occasionally they do this.

So just got my car back from the shop.

1) They couldnt find anything wrong with the stepper motor, nor did the car throw up any error codes. "Vehicle operating per mfg spec at this time"
2) The ordered control module for OnStar
3) Ordered parts for the windscreen condensation TSB
4) regarding the sudden oversteer midway thru a turn - Vehicle operating per mfg spec, AWD & 4WD vehicle will "lead" thru a slow turn" was the answer

ALSO, they performed a recall on Rear Differential oil. I didnt know about this, and wasnt informed when I picked up the car. I just read it on the sheet.

So i got the warnings for the THIRD time, after Minuteman VW took a look at it and said nothing was wrong. This time, I had my cellphone with me so here at the pictures.

I'm wondering if the Hill Decent Control system has a problem. That would seem to make the most sense.

The next time this happens, try to find a very steep hill to go down, kick it into Tip 1 and see what happens.

I had this problem too. Stepper motor replaced. Then the alternator cables were done. That fixed the problem.

Had this pop up after my stepper motor was replaced. Delaer asked if my wheels were cranked all the way to the left when i parked. Ironically they were. Haven't had it pop up since.

This warning just popped up in mine...ESP light is on, and none of the traction/stability electronics are functioning...its amazing how out of control this vehicle can get in snow w/o any electronics to help it. Anyways, here's a photo..I'll try and get an appointment tomorrow for the dealer to take a look. Not sure if its related or not but my tranny has had jerky upshifts when cold...

I have had it before myself but just thought that I have not noticed it for a very long time. It may have been fixed in the major service campaign, I honestly could not tell you. I know my stuff worked fine when I was on the rally, so I guess it is good.
