Summer is on the way, and it’s time for a new set of Tires. I do some off-roading so I am looking at the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 in a 265/60-18.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company - Discoverer A/T3â„¢

It is 30.5” so I think it will fit my 2006 V10 without any rubbing. I know the Land Rover guys used to love Cooper tires, so I am thinking about giving them a try. I have tried the Nitto Tierra Grapplers (noisy, and wouldn't balance right), Pirelli Scorpion ATRs (looked too narrow), and Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 2 (all in 255/55-18 ), and all of then seemed to wear out at about 25k miles which may be due to the weight of the V10.

Has anyone run the Cooper Discoverer A/T3, and how do you like them?

I've been running them on my pickup truck. Love them. A little slick in snow conditions but otherwise an excellent tire that's as tough as a 50 cent steak.

I looked at Revo 2s as well but went with the Coopers.

Thanks. Just looked at my receipt, and the Revo 2s have less that 20k miles on them. I could probably get another 5k miles out of them max. Not very impressed with them.

I am also looking at the Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar which I think is an update (or maybe just a new name) for the Goodyear Silent Armor. Some Treg owner's have had great luck with the silent Armors.

30K sounds realistic...that's not wearing it down to the wear bars but wearing it to the point that its no longer a legit A/T tire. I am getting this out of my 8,000lb pickup trucks that tow heavy loads 95% of the time. They wear even and square (i.e.: the tire footprint widens as it wears.). I particularly like the traction you'll get out of them on soft grass that's wet and a bit mucky. Very tough conditions in which to find grip. Gravel/dirt roads with lots of sharp rocks are where this tire shines...its a tough tire, smooth ride, quiet as a highway tire.

Cooper doesn't have much of a name in North America, but the At3 is a great tire. I certainly won't pay for Michelins (IMO socialist French union labor is all you pay for with those tires..they are all priced at double what they should cost). From what I've read, and the advice I've gotten from my knowledgeable and reliable tire shop - the Goodyear Kevalrs are a great tire, personally I'd rather have something I don't see on every Jeep on the road, but it doesn't sound like you'd regret buying them. I have no experience to share with them but they were definitely on my consideration list.

Only other "complaint" I can think of with the AT3 (other than snow traction) is that when they are at full tread depth - on center steering is a bit vague. Not a show stopper, but something you'll likely notice until they wear a bit.

hope this is helpful

I myself need to figure this out as well since my Discoverer ATR's are about done and I need new ones. I have seen the AT3's on different trucks and SUV's. I wondered how decent the are. I liked m ATR's until they wore down to the point of being noisy.

Fellow forum member Linder said he got 50k miles from his Goodyear Silent Armors, and has replaced them with Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure With Kevlar, which I think is basically an update of the Silent Armor. 50k miles sounds quite good to me!

Need to replace my Bridgestone Revo 2s very soon. At 50,000 miles and 4/32nd rapidly approaching 3/32nd. I liked them a lot but want to try something different. Looking at the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure, Cooper Discoverer A/T3, and the Firestone Destination AT. Anyone have experience with these.

Yeti, what did you end up installing on your rig?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

If you got 50k miles on your Revo 2s, you did very well.
My Revo 2s are at about 5/32, with 25k miles so I don't feel comfortable driving them on gravel and 4WD roads.

I finally decided to go with the Goodyear Wrangler Adventurer. Ordered them yesterday, and get them installed next week. They were more expensive than the Coopers, but all the tire stores I talked to said they were a much better tire. Time will tell.

I8ABUG,

I religious regarding air pressure and tile rotation (rotate them every 5K miles) so I feel that had a lot to do with the mileage. I worry about broken seashells puncturing the tires when driving on the beach now. The Revo's are looking like slicks. Getting $80 back in the form of a gift card promotion from Goodyear doesn't hurt either. Please post your initial thoughts after you've driven them for a few hundred miles.

I was very picky on air pressure, and rotated twice per year (5k miles max) too. It may be the curvy mountain roads I drive, the way I drive, and the heavy weight of the V10.

Anyway on to some new rubber, and peace of mind on the rocky roads next week.

Just mounted a set of these. Initial reaction: for Houston's 3rd world roads, these are a marked improvement from my 255/55/18 Nitto 420s. Per someone's earlier post, a bit fuzzy on dead center steering out of the box. Off road trip planned this week, will check out traction.

BtW, I loved those Nittos for hwy and handling. Like a Porsche on the exit ramps. Got about 40k miles out of them. Just wanted something more aggressive for off-road (and potholes)

On a 2005 v8, 94,000 miles.

As a comparison I have a set of Cooper STT's fitted in a spare set of rims for Off Road work. Took the to Cape York with crew 12 months ago and found them to be absolutely brilliant in heavy off road work (towing). The have done about 10,000 km (6,000 miles) and are worn about 25%. Only down side is the expected tread noise. I would definitely buy the again.

I had the Goodyear Wrangler Adventurers with Kevlar installed today.

Initial impression of the tire is quite good, very quiet, ride smooth, and corner/steer well. The 265-60/18s also look much better and aggressive than the ole 255-55/18s. I will follow up in a few weeks.

Hey I8ABUG,

How do you like those Goodyear's? Going to be ordering mine next Friday and installed on the 17th, just in time for the family vacation to Ocracoke island. Can't wait to get the new rubber put on!

I had the Goodyear Wrangler Adventurers with Kevlar installed about a month and 500 miles ago. I have driven them on all types of roads…..some highway driving, curvy mountain roads, dirt roads, and off road.

I am VERY impressed with this tire. The highway handling is great especially for an oversized tire.It is by far the best tire I have run on my Tregs. Much better than the Bridgestone Dueler Revo 2s, Pirelli Scorpion ATRs, Nitto Tierra Grapplers, or a Michelin (can’t remember the name).

Highly recommended!

And the larger size looks great!

I had the Goodyear Adventurer's installed one week ago. Will put about 1,100 miles on them when the week is up. Size 265-65-17. Drove down here to the Outer Banks (Ocracoke Island) the next day loaded up with bicycles, fishing gear, etc. Great tires. Quiet, and responsive. Aired down for the week to 17 psi for beach driving. Great beach tires. Look great on the beast.

Does anyone have any further comment on the Coopers?

Andy, I'm doing the exact comparison right now. The V8 NEEDS new tires. I'm so disappointed that there are no good off road tire options in stock size 255-55-18. The V8 can be a DOG at altitude with oversized tires.

I had a complete set of Coopers put on my V10 last about 18 mo ago. So far they seem to be wearing very well through a couple of rotation cycles. Also good traction in the rain and wet. I have NOT done any off road stuff with them so I cannot comment on that aspect of their performance.

I am new to the treg but not to Cooper AT3. I have a set on my cummins diesel, my dodge 1500 and my ford 250. I really like these tires. I have about 30K on my cummins and they are a little over half gone. I will put them on my treg sometime before winter gets here. When my wife's juke needs tires, cooper AT3's are going on it too. They have pulled my through some good old south Ga. mud a time or two.

From those that have come from the stock 255/15/18 size, how much reduction in handling in corners have you found in each of the Cooper or Goodyear? I have the 265/65/17 mounted with REVOs and the handling while still good is notably compromised. Of course, the 18's will have a slightly smaller sidewall that 17's.

Chris........I think the Goodyears corner quire well. I was hesitant in going with a larger size, based on my experience with some Blizzaks in 265/60-18 that came with my V10 when I bought it.

I think the larger Goodyears corner better than the 255/55-18 Nitto Tierra Grapplers I ran in the past.

I am very happy I spent a few extra $$, and went with the Goodyears over the Coopers.

Fantastic. Thanks Andy!

Chris, I just put a set of AT3's on mine and like them so far. Two sets of AT2's before that. Handling is fine even at 245/70/17 with them. Only thing weird about them is a squirmy feeling when on a grooved highway. I'm getting used to it now, but weird feeling for sure. Matt experienced the same thing with his on his Blazer.

I just bought a set for my GMC, 3rd go around for me, I went through 2 sets on my F250, now a fresh set on my Sierra 2500. Everything I said above remains the case...also the feeling Yeti speaks about is the case in my truck...so it sounds like a tire specific thing not a vehicle specific thing.

I personally think its the best street-able AT tire available.

Was looking at Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac in 265/60 x 18 size. See they are available in US but when i contacted the local dealer here in NSW Australia Jax Tyres they just replied 'that size is not available' :-((

Strange they didn't ask why i wanted them, alternatives available, what car it was for....... nothing just don't do that size!!

Not so big in the marketing department then !!!

I was told by an old tire shop owner that Cooper Mastercraft CS4 the best bang for the buck tire. And they come in at $40-50 less than Michelin.
