Just as Treguan said

Rush hour city driving with a little highway mix, I've done no worse than 17.9 long term average, and as good as 22. This includes frequent stomping on the gas to get out of certain situations (geezer with geishas for example)...

Long distances even when you're not all downhill from Tahoe can see mpg numbers easily over 25 without trying, and more if you're fuel conscious.

In summary it's like having a cayenne s V8 or even slightly better, with the appetite of a V6--definitely no worse but potentially better

For all the hybrid owners, looking for input on used hybrid vs new TDI lux. Currently own a 05 Treg v6 and are considering another. We are considering a boat in the future (next year or two) otherwise might have considered q5 or Tiggy. Nothing really like the compromise of size, power, safety, and decent fuel economy of TDI or hybrid. I was not considering the hybrid due to cost and marginal returns on EPA but very impressed with technology of how they pulled it off. I recently found a 2011 hybrid with 17k mi for forty grand. It was WV company car and will come with 5 year extended warranty. The best I can find a TDI for is about forty-seven grand for 2012 lux.

That used hybrid suddenly seems more interesting given it's multiple personalities (tow, supercharged v6, Econ if babied) and the cost of premium vs. diesel. Day to day driving is 15 mi round trip in combination of rural/suburban back roads with one exit on interstate. Weekend trips skiing in winter and eventually a boat towed behind.

For the hybrid, my concerns are potential increase for tech-rich hybrid to suffer from reliability issues and if I could take on future DIY repairs (breaks and rotors for ex.) as I did with current Treg. My excitement is getting the luxury and that same technological wonder and power without spending 60 k.

For the TDI, I would have new for about 7k more and it seems like the popular choice for most econ vs. power for price. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts or feedback.

Thanks a bunch.

NC Sucks donkey balls when it comes to gas prices, you should know that by now. For reference, I just completed a 500 mile trip 2 ways from Raleigh to South NJ, and Diesel was 4:09 here while it was only 3.83 in VA. SC has very low prices too. Georgia and TN are OK, but NC really kills you.

On average, prices for all grades of fuel are 20 ~ 40 cents higher in NC than all the surrounding states. That's why most truckers don't like to re-fuel in NC.

Also, because of the lack of fuel revenue in NC along the Freeways, NC is now planning to impose toll on all freeways eventually. Everything is expensive in this state except for housing/rent. EVERYTHING. I have lived in several states in the last 6 years to know that.

You know, I DID notice that it was lower in VA when I drove through there on a long road trip last summer. I'm driving to TN this week, I'll check it out there. I mostly buy gas at Costco which is always the lowest price - yesterday it was $3.36 for premium while at BP it was $3.68 and of course, diesel at $4.05. I guess I didn't realize just HOW much regionally the diesel price can differ. I mostly notice the difference in gas prices when I go back to my native Los Angeles to visit, where it's (of course) MUCH more expensive than anywhere in NC.

I hadn't heard that about tolls on freeways coming! Yikes.

But with diesel prices what they are here - and I'm not planning on moving - it seems like the hybrid or (dare I say it?) the V6 would be the best choice. Trying to get a great deal on a hybrid would be my first choice, as a V6 with Exec trim will break 50K.

Also - I don't think I've ever done better than 23 mpg on my Tiguan, even on long road trips.

Thanks everyone for the input!!

And by the way, when I was out in L.A. this past summer, I was surprised I didn't see more Tregs on the road there! Hardly any. Saw SO many X5's, X3's and SO many Cayennes!! Cayennes were all over the place! I would have thought they'd be more popular - but of course I'm biased. :)

Considering they only build 8K a year worldwide, you're not going to see very many Touaregs on the road. I've only seen three other T3's here in Vegas on the road that weren't sitting in the dealer lot.

8K a year worldwide? where are you getting than number? they sell 800-1000 a month in the US alone (around 10,000 a year).
Volkswagen Group of America - Press Releases

They have sold over 600,000 worldwide since its intro in 2003.

Exactly

Use the money you save on your exec lease return and invest in more warranty (although drivetrain including hybrid motor and battery warranty good for 8 years and many miles) if you intend to keep, and upgrade the stereo with better amplification and speakers, by the time you're done you'll have a better than Dynaudio system for slightly less money than the cost of a Dynaudio upgrade (which reportedly still uses paper cone drivers)...

Now that the cold weather is around can anyone describe what the heat is like in e-only mode? the only hybrid experience I've got is with a Camry hybrid, it had an electric heater that would kick on in e-only mode (ie: at a stoplight)...the heater sucked....it might be good for a "chilly" 50 degree morning but certainly wasn't capable of dealing with freezing temps.

How's the T-reg hybrid do?

So Hybrid owners, I am interested in picking up a slightly used 2011 Hybrid. I've looked at the regular 2012 TDI Touareg and owned a 2006 V10 TDI previously. I had an observation regarding the Touareg overall. Is it just me or does it seem like the whole Touareg interior quality has been taken a notch down? I say this because the plastic lower door panels just jumped at me as I know on the previous version the whole door was soft touch vinyl. For those that have been living with the Hybrid on a daily basis and have had a Touareg previously, do you feel the same?

Interior quality a notch down? No, not to me. I had a T1 V8 and now a TDI Exec (same interior as Hybrid, sans a few buttons).

I don't know about the previous model, but my 2012 has the hard plastic lower door panels. They seem to scratch/scuff easily. Fortunately my scuffs don't look too bad in most lighting. It used to really annoy me. I got my the first scuff in the passenger door during the first week of ownership.

The finishes in the latest Audis and upper end VWs are very good but not perfect. When I first sat in the A7 I was similarly disappointed by the extensive use of plastic everywhere. The trim pieces you describe do show scuffs but fortunately clean up nicely with magic eraser. But I found that I was doing the same thing for the door panels our BMWs to keep them looking new.

I think the T3 is a step up in term of interior quality..and my V10 had the full leather interior. Sure the lower panels aren't the soft touch but so what, I don't go around feeling up the bottom of my door panels.

I just wish some other wood options were available (ie a dark ash, a grainy oak, even vavona would be nice.

Don't think you can compare the two. The new one has a very modern look and Is just as functional. The older one has a more classic feel to it, especially the gauge cluster. They really are apples and oranges.

However, I find the q7 to have a really good interior, even better than the cayenne imho. But just comparing the T3 and the T2/1, I don't think you can call one better than the other, until you get to under-the-hood features.

Couldn't have said it better.

Regarding the colour instrument gauge cluster on the older models, unless I'm wrong, it is essentially the Phaeton one. Read this then, and gain a new appreciation of the quality and time put into just the glass itself: http://forums.vwvortex.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1963&d=1350256874
