I went out and drove a brand new 08 V8 Touareg, and loved it. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact that its auto, and I've never owned an auto before (10 years of driving stick). Wondering, did you drive stick before the Touareg? Do you wish it came with a manual? Miss driving manual since you got your Touareg?

It's an automatic tranny vehicle for sure. But add the new 7-speed DSG to the package and Mmmm... what an idea!

Treg is my first automatic vehicle ever...for the type of vehicle that it is I wouldn't even consider getting it with a manual. I agree a DSG would be the ultimate in this application.

If I ever took it off road, I think a stick would be fun.
Off-roading would be the ultimate reason why I wouldn't want a stick in the Touareg. Clutching up a hill climb, while adding a good bit of challenge, would make some things downright dangerous. If you stall, you may very well roll off the mountain into the great beyond, at least on some of the passes in Colorado.

Overall, I'd like to have another vehicle with a stick, as that's what my previous two ('95 Trans Am, '00 GMC Sonoma) had and I enjoyed it. But if the vehicle has any off-road capabilities that I'd be exploiting, I'd get it with an automatic.

I am not so mechanically inclined but isn't what you ar really missing is a clutch, Paddle shifters come standard on Touaregs here in Indonesia and they are OK but admittantly do not replace a stick.

I have had a number of 4x4s with stick shift. For my sins I was punished with a Landrover. My R5 is fitted with Tiptronic. At first Iwas a little unsure with auto in the bush but now would never go back to manual. You just don't have the control when pulling away with a manual.

Uhhgghh I would not want this SUV as a stick where I live. It would be a bear in traffic and steep hills. Get a sports car or a motorcycle if you like to shift. The Automatic does great for places I drive.

You make a valid point - but your offroading would be different than mine. I live in the midwest and I would just be slip slidding away on some muddy farmland. If I stalled, I would roll backwards a total of 3 inches :D

A 4x4 automatic is an oxymoron and one of the many gripes I've had with the Durangos who are built on a Dakota chasis which come with a standard but not the Durangos. You want an automatic, get a 4 door sedan. You need a 4x4 then shift!

Would be nice if it actually shifted 3 seconds faster than it does. The time lag between when you shift and when it happens are three lifetimes...

The other benefit is that my CFO wouldn't drive it  And no, she hasn't been informed of the 6 speed Tiptronic yet... need to know....

I doubt that a Landrover or Cruiser manual could shift as quickly as a VW Tiptronic. The question is why would you change gears in a tricky situation? I was taught to choose the correct gear and stick with it. Any gear changing usually results in getting stuck.

The reason you change gears is the reason you have a standard. I live a top a mountain that 6 months a year is covered in snow and ice. I haul stuff (dogs and lumber etc) I need the control of a standard which is what a 4x4 should come with. You want auto, buy a sedan or a front wheel drive.

We don't have much ice and snow here except in mid winter high up in the mountains. We have pleanty of rocks, sand, dust and mud - none of which prsent the same problems that you encounter. I understand your problem. We have both manual (stick) and Tiptronic available on Diesel models. Are they not avaiable in Alaska?
