Not wanting to buy into a **** fight, but could this be Protectionism by Stealth? Not an opinion, simply a question?

I'll tell you something, this has way larger implications than what is being reported. Chrysler in Germany had a similar issue where up to 120 km/hr the cat converter was engaged, above those speeds it was disengaged spewing illegal toxins. This is going back several years but it was a similar problem maybe not as premeditated. American news didn't even cover it if I recall.

There is a very real chance that this is an industry wide problem, and not just with Diesels. My question is are they going to investigate their own domestic automakers for compliance? or just wash their hands thankful their up and coming biggest competitor is out of their hair.

VW is going to end up looking good by fully cooperating. Not going to be a $18 billion hit, that's for sure. Not even close.

The article also mentioned that TDI sales (for the 2.0) are suspended.

I wouldn't say they're going to look good by cooperating but that they have to cooperate to be eligible for penalty mitigation with the EPA and possibly the US DOJ. I would not want to be the exec/execs that signed off on this alleged defeat device. I don't have an affected car and I don't live in an inspection state, but if I did i wouldn't want anyone touching my TDI. The problem with taking that approach is that resale could be problematic if you can't show to a buyer that the engine received a snip.

You're right. I went a little overboard. Still think this will be rectified. There is damage on VW's side and for us owners. Going to be difficult to expand the diesel market here.

Winerkorn's comments don't provide much (insights or future response)

“I personally am deeply sorry that we have broken the trust of our customers and the public,” Winterkorn said. “We will do everything necessary in order to reverse the damage this has caused.”

Doesn't sound like a strong "we are going to fight this" preamble, more like the "oh sh*t" moment utter by (fill in your favorite public official) getting caught with their favorite vice.

This will suck if this end up derailing German diesels in NA...

Herr Piëch, you are needed more than ever!

Isn't the emissions system mostly Bosch controlled. I ran with that f'ing light on for 2 months troubleshooting the emissions so saying its easily bypassed is hard to believe... I'd have had it in test mode those 2 months as that would have been the fix!

I know the 4 cylinder guys have had the same dpf/ab/light issues as well...if anybody knows the ins/outs it would be the tuner guru's and nobody's said nothing. You think somebody would have blackmailed somebody and it would have been fixed by now before blowing up like this. So my opinion is VW is doing the right thing as what other company would come out with such an outlandish libel statement?

I just don't understand the reasons for being deceptive...a few miles more per gallon? The other German automakers did not resort to such tactics as far as we know.

Just so stupid. I am glad VW got caught but the proposed penalties are harsh. Everyone loses.

My guess its unit costs...

It may have been the only way to get a Jettas to market (with the hp/torgue specs and the 40 mpg target) at a targeted price point.

And totally agree, this isn't how to work the rules to buy a couple more laps per stint at LeMans. Winterkorn put the entire brand at risk and the market responded.

We haven't heard the full story yet.

(Just guessing here)
a) You are allowed to disable some controls under some circumstances.
b) VW (may have) disabled emission controls more than allowed
c) VW (may have) thought, we better make sure all controls are turned on during tests, even if they would be disabled for other (possible even valid and legal) reasons.
d) Someone noticed that some emission control activated when connected for a test and deactivated when disconnected.
