Where do you keep your phone while driving?

In my Audi, the phone was most often placed on top of the ashtray under the the radio, or under / next to the hand brake.

I've had my Touareg for about a month now, but I still can't find a happy place to keep my phone. I have keyless start, so usually one of the cup holders has car keys, and the second often has a water bottle or similar. If I have a passenger and I need both cup holders, its easy to demote the keys to the door or somewhere else (hell, maybe the ignition?) - but the phone still really doesn't' have a home.

I've looked around and found that there are a number of mounts, but nothing has yet to catch my eye. Ideally I'd like something really simple, maybe on or near where the ignition is, so I don't have to reach far to grab the phone or view the screen for Waze, etc.

Any ideas? Please post up photos, if you can.

If you have keyless start why is your keys even out of your pocket? No reason for them to be laying in the cup holder at all. I put my phone in the one cup holder unless some one else is with me and we need both. If I need to use both it is just between my legs or I have stuck it in the door pocket before too.

Well, for starters - I've been driving around *without* keys in my pocket for the last...18 years? I don't find it terribly comfortable sitting for extended periods with a collection of stabby objects in my pocket. I do the same when sitting in restaurants, etc - keys come out of the pocket asap.

+1, I also keep it in the grab handle area of the driver door. Its easily in reach (although I never text and drive) so that I can leave with it when I get out of the car.

I like to put my phone in that area in all the cars that I have owned. I have had a couple cars which sucked because that area wasn't shaped properly for phone use.

I keep my key (singular) in my pocket and my phone in a different pocket (usually my jacket in the winter). I don't touch my phone when I'm driving as I just don't ever see a need to use it at the same time as I'm driving. besides, I'd have to turn the stereo down to use the phone and I'd much rather listen to tunes than talk with someone that isn't in the car with me.

you should not be worried about you phone when driving. 100% concentration is needed especially for defensive driving against all of those 18-24 year olds that still cant keep their hand off it. on the phone while driving has been proven to be as bad as under the influence.

Here it is against the law to even touch your phone while the engine is running. Hands free all the way through the multi media system. So in short anywhere the phone will fit where it is out of the way

I always use a ProClip.

Easy in and out with the lightening connector permanently attached and charges while I drive. I drive a lot and use my phone to listen to audio books or music as well as Waze. The charging is essential or my battery would be dead after 2-3 hours of heavy use. I don't touch it if I don't have to, but sometimes Siri just wants to do her own thing.

Also, loose the house keys. These are the best thing since bread.

This. I have a proclip mount in my 2012 golf TDI and it's fabulous. Haven't gotten one for the T3 yet but am considering. The only issue for me is we use the T3 primarily for towing our Airstream and we have the RF brake controller, and they warn against having a cell phone within about 2 feet of the in-car controller as it could interfere with the radio signal. But having the phone to the right of the nav display and the brake controller remote in my lap is probably sufficient.

Mine goes in the "ashtray" ( which is actually a plastic bin) with a very short charge lead to the cigarette socket. Can't move forward under brakes and my 30 minute trip to work is almost a perfect charge time.

Wallet and Samsung S5 (not small) fit perfectly and live in the dashboard bin of my T3 with the lid closed. On rare occasions that i need to charge the phone or anybody elses it sits in the drink holder and I have a 6 inch flat ribbon cable that plugs into a usb adapter that plugs into the 12v round socket in the centre console. The ribbon cable allows the lid to be completely closed. Alternatively all can just sit in the centre console bin with lid shut. (For Aus people I bought in JB HiFi and also bought similar cables for old and new IPADs. The IPAD sits on top on centre console when charging if not being used).

Don't keep your phone in your pocket or between your legs.

The touareg is well insulated and the phone boosts output for signal. I can actually feel the heat sometimes. That sort of radiation can't be good for the little ones. ;)

SWITCHED OFF!

I'd happily crush any mobile user inside their vehicle and leave the lump of steel on the side of the road leaking blood as a warning to the next idiot that thinks they are clever enough to drive AND hold a bloody phone to their ear.

I don't give a ****e about their lives or their family's if they are in the vehicle - it's the poor buggars they maim and kill that deserve better protection from people who seem to think their damned phone call is more important than paying attention to their driving.

I've had enough near missies to say that the use of a mobile should be treated like drink and drug driving with an immediate 12 month ban.

I think we're past that, Nooby.

Where do you put it after you turn it off?

In my trouser/pants pocket - where else?

I leave it in the driver's door pocket. Anything that's legal to do can be done by voice command. In most jurisdictions it isn't even legal to dial while driving.

One major omission IMO is that there should be a link between phone and nav screen where text messages are displayed/read out loud. The Ford escape of all things has this capability, too bad my vehicle that costs 3x as much doesn't!

I put mine in airplane mode and put it in the center/armrest console next to the pistol, extra magazine and chewing gum. The gum goes between the phone and pistol to protect from scratching. :)

Since this thread is already went sideways, I’d better contribute to its misalignment before the site admins will shut it down.

By regulation, a pistol in a car, just like an open bottle of buzz, has to be stored in a fashion that it does not allow for an easy access while driving. It has to be encased and clips shall be stored away from the handgun. One needs to possess a concealed carry permit to have it anywhere near reach.

I keep my phone in my gym bag or in my pocket and prefer not to answer any calls while driving unless it is from my family or close friends.

phone and pistol........ the two in the one sentence just don't sound right to me although the word safety does resonate strongly for both

You know you've asked a question on the Internet with a simply query about phone storage devolves into 4 pages of discussion about even having a phone powered on, and where to best store your pistol while driving.

Oh, and an angry post about how you should be run off the road for even *thinking* of having a phone accessible while driving. Blasphemous!

Lol. Oh Internet. You crack me up.

This thread definitely went astray. My Android does read text back to me, but I rarely bother with it. I will talk on the phone in my car via bluetooth, but every one I talk to will tell you they hate talking to me while I am driving since i end up paying more attention to my driving than them. I like having the ability to use my phone without touching it while I drive. To each their own, but I have yelled at more then a few people who were totally engrossed in their conversation while in the fast lane doing well under the speed limit while doing so.

There needs to be a limit. I draw that limit at hands free. Holding a phone and/or texting are past the limit.

Some car radios can display Artist & Title information for songs being played. Stations have to decide if they're willing to take the risk of sending that information to the radio and possibly being sued for distracting the driver. The companies that make that technology available to broadcasters discourage its use, while also facilitating its use. Crazy.
