Turbo's run up to 100,000 Rpm,my experience with Diesels was to allow the engine to idle a few minutes to allow the turbos to decrease Rpm,allow oil to flow thru bearings and cool down ,before turning engine off,Marty

We have a new record for our 'Egg... -18F today. It's all the way up to the predicted high of -5F as of 7PM.

Windchill was -40F

Just under 2 seconds that the glow plug light was on befor starting.

Had to wear socks today....:)

Well we're up to 4 hours and 34 minutes of daylight so it'll be a while until we get 22 hours of daylight and plaster aluminum foil over every window  But 5 below is positively balmy and a warm up of near 50 degrees.

-33f last winter, 2 seconds for the glow plugs and she started just fine. -22f yesterday am and again no issues or long delay for the plugs. Although I did notice a bit of diesel clatter for about 5 seconds. 39,000 trouble free miles.

P.s. For DicknNancy,

I wish Schmeltz Countryside had a diesel when I needed one. I bought a Saab from them in 99 and had the best service ever. My only regret regarding the Touareg is not buying it from Schmeltz.

Yep, we have had very good luck with them. We were fortunate to be able to order the third of the four or five they were allocated in 2004.

We walked into the Sales Manager, told him exactly what we wanted, watched him enter the order as we requested, paid our $500 down, and 3-4 months later drove off the lot with the 'egg.

I remember him mentioning the low number of these special VW's each dealer was allocated and because they are the largest in the 5 state area, they got more than some others. I know we are still the only 2004 Red V10 in the state which is sort of cool too.

31st of December in Nekoosha, WI

The picture was taken at about 7pm on 31st of December, the next morning (1st of January) the temperature was slightly colder (-23C). Note that my temperature is in metric units (Centigrade) and not in F.

Treg started just fine in the morning with glow plug maybe on for extra 1.5 seconds.

You guys/gals were right. Started right up this morning like any other day. I am ready to start a thread on "What is the hottest temp" after this week of sub-zero weather. Enjoy the weekend warm-up....a balmy 5F.

I'd say what it was out here today, but y'all would come out here and beat me up. Well, once you thaw out, that is! :evil_laugh:

(But don't worry, you'll get your revenge on me, when it's 118 degrees here in July)

Glad she started right up for you!

Matt

its -13F here now.. treg has been sitting for about 3 days now.. all nice and covered with 6 inches of snow :p

side note:
I do plan however to get a oil pan heater but search hasn't helped in identifying any certain ones people have used..and reguardless of what the treg has been tested at I'd still rather have the heater..better safe than sorry. Can anyone recommend one either here or in my 40k thread?

So while you all are talking about how cold your TDIs are starting in bear a thought to us on the other side of the world, on Thursday it reached 44.5 celsius (that is 112 fahrenheit), :( oh if only my nuts could freeze up.

-53F in Fairbanks without a plug-in. I won't bother commenting on previous temps as anything above -50F is summer.

76 here in AZ today... I saw 22 once!!! that's positive - not negative!

I'd like to see some pics of alaska if you have any!

My Touareg has started at -33F so I have full confidence in it. The state of Minnesota has required that all diesel in our state contain 2% "biodiesel". So far this 2% has had no consequences to my VW, however this last cold spell of -22F had had many school buses in MN unable to start or worse, stalled on the side of the road with a full compliment of children. This is because "Biodiesel" gels at much cooler temps than regular diesel, clogging up the fuel filter as well as the water separator. What concerns me most is that the left wing, church of a state that I live in will make 5% "biodiesel" a requirement this spring and 10% required by 2011, eventually stopping at 20% in 2015. I find it hard to believe that my Tuoareg will start with any of these mixtures in the cold.
Sorry for the rant,

-37C, was visiting a friend in Grande Prairie in Northern Alberta... -37C was ambient temp, not including the wind chill. Parked outside of the hotel overnight... Was a bit weary, but she cranked over, and started the next morning... I did dose the fuel with Howes Diesel Treat when I filled up though.

Yeah, can you believe people wanting to force less impact on the environment? What left wing A-holes! It's like they expect someone to design something that will allow biod to work in the cold, how silly.

Being that God made the earth in several days, designing some new things to allow biod to run in the cold should be simple.

Yes, the government is the answer to all of our problems... it has worked splendidly up to this point

Hey guys don't take a look to your MPG at -20F you'll probably get about 1mpg :)
