just a follow up question. how many quarts does a 2004 v8 hold? and what weight are you guys using? the manual reccomends 5w-40 i was going to get 5w-30 and return the 10w-30. i live in the northeast.

 

For an oil and filter change for the V-8, add 8 quarts, drive it a bit and then let it drain down for 30 minutes or so and check the dip stick; then add just a bit until you are midway between the add and full marks. You don't want to fill to the top mark, as it will be over filled when the oil expands due to heat.

I would recommend that you use 0W-40 Mobil 1; the Mobil 30 weight oils don't meet VWs specs and don't perform well at high temperatures and high shear loading -- ie. they break down when you need the lubrication the most. It should be good for 7,500 miles unless your driving is severe service (a lot of stop and go, say New York City), then 5,000 miles is a better mark.

 

I use LubroMoly 5w40 in my 2005 V8. Its VW 502 approved. I just changed it out yesterday. That was my first oil change on this vehicle. I have used this oil exclusively in the past in my other VW's.

LubroMoly and Amsoil are not on VWs TSB 17 08 01 Approved Oils list. Does not imply anything wrong with the oils, just that the companies did not submit them to VW scrutiny. Other notables missing are Red Line and Swepco, both well regarded in racing circles.

 

I can't find the file right now (I think its on my work computer), but I do actually have a copy of the VW 502.00 approval letter for LubroMoly Vollsynthese. The manufacturer is LiquiMoly and the current name of the oil is Synthoil High Tech (I have confirmed that only the name switched) which shows up on this list:

I did painstaking research on the approval back when I found this product and was using it in my Jetta.

So, I'm not sure what list you are referencing - I'd be interested to see it in case I need to do some more research.

I do thank you for taking the time to look it up and post a warning. The last think I want is for VW to have any reason to hesitate about my warranty.

Sorry but I disagree. First of all the Federally mandated Magnuson-Moss act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.
The amsoil for example meets or exceeds the specs of VW. They just do not have the desire to be on a approved list. I asked them. Besides that VW will have to prove that failure was caused by the oil.

I found corresponding numbers for the LiquiMoly oil I use. I don't know exactly what they mean but to me this looks comparable to the Amsoil product specs you posted. Kind of hard to tell, since I do not know the other oil. I just know that I have always been very happy with amsoil. I have about 300000miles experience with it so far.
Abou warranty stuff:
Most car owners go to places like walmart and jiffy lube and I have never heart of problems due to different brands of oil.
Yes if you need to use a 0W20 oil and put 20W50 in it and get problems that is a different story, but as long as it meets specs you are ok.
Besides that amsoil stands behind its product so VW in a lawsuit will have to fight amsoil, not me.

 

I use Castrol 5W40. Thats what my local VW dealer uses and that's slao what Crappy Tire sells.

 

For V8 always Mobil1 0w40. Diesel whatever synthetic dealer puts in.

 

There is no better choice than Castrol Syntec 0w30. This is the "Made in Germany" oil that is labeled as "European Formula". It's hard to find (Most Auto Zones in the US carry it, and Walmart in Canada for some reason), usually 6.99 a quart. Whatever you do, make sure it meets the appropriate VW spec for your particular car.

Yeah, the drain plugs are terrible. Nearly crapped myself when my drain pan almost overflowed due to the gush of oil!!! Holy smokes! Hotta drill extra purge holds in my drainpan. Love the Mobil 1!!!
