VW Bluetooth and phone pairing.

Hi

I have a T1 Touareg of which I have integrated an RNS510 and 9W7 Bluetooth unit. All was fine pairing the bluetooth with my Iphone 4 but now having issues trying to pair anything above and including the Iphone 5.

Although the VW bluetooth unit registers on the Iphone 5 as 'VW PHONE' when I try to connect to it, it fails to connect and just shows 'not connected'.

I am just wondering if anyone out there has had similar issues and any suggestions on resolving the problem?

Is there any firmware updates that can be installed within the Bluetooth module to allow connection perhaps to newer generation smart phones?

The bluetooth unit I have installed is as follows:

9W7 - 5K0 035 730D
SW:2902
HW: H09
HCD: SJA 47/11

Hi Terry
Try another phone.
Which bus adapter are your using to hookup the rns? Is the bt module connected directly to rns or via the canbus converter?

HI Singh,

I'm using the Canshack convertor for the integration, and the Bluetooth adapter is connected directly to the RNS-510.

I will test with another phone manufacturer, but I'm surprised that an Iphone4 connects with no problem (and with and including a2dp capabilities) but an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 5s cannot even pair.

I am making an assumption that perhaps the later generation iPhones had a change in their Bluetooth stacks that the 9w7 module does not recognise, but I am only guessing here.

That is why I am asking the question of whether firmware can be upgraded within the Bluetooth module itself?

I run a canshack in my touareg as well. However not using 9w7.
Is the wiring from bt unit directly going into the rns plug?

I am running 9w7 with rns510 in my cc and have no problems with any phone

Further investigation on the issue. And my mistake in my last post should have read that the Bluetooth module works with an iphone 4 not a 4s.

It appears that it may have to do with Bluetooth profiles.

Today I connected a Sony Xperia with no problems. As well as streamed some music to the rns via a2dp from this devise. The Sony uses Bluetooth profile 2 and 3, depending on the model. The iphone 4 also uses profile 2.

It seems that from the iPhone 4s and onwards of version iOS 7.1, Apple introduced profile 4.0 Bluetooth standard. It appears the VW 9w7 Bluetooth module is not compatible with this profile.

Profile 4 Bluetooth apparently is a lower power communication between devices and is used for example on those wrist bands for joggers which communicate health data back to the phone. These devices use a smaller battery and therefore transmit a reduced strength signal back to the smartphone.

I am assuming this is why the vw 9w7 acknowledges that the iphone 5 exists but due to the incompatibility in profiles is not able to connect.

Again I believe it may come down to a new firmware version or even a new Bluetooth module that supports profile 4 standard.

I have a 510 unit that I have pulled out. The blue tooth unit was a parrot, which I found surprising. One thing that I am not sure about is that with my unit I could not load my phone book into the unit and voice activation did not work? I was wondering if this is a function of firmware or how the unit is connected?

Its a problem with the 9W7, I had one and it would work with my IPhone 4 but not my wife’s IPhone 4S. However her Jetta has an RNS510 with a 9W3, and it works fine with her 4S. I have dumped the 9W7 for a Fiscon as the 9W7 would not interface with the MFD+ resulting in a lack of phone information in the dashboard display. Fiscon is just better!!

This is interesting are you saying that with the right Bluetooth unit I could have the Phone numbers on my MDF , select these numbers and also use the voice function ? If so then I would be interested in finding out how to get such a unit as I have everything else.

This is the link to the product from Kufatec. It displays in the MFD, either Red White or Coloured.. Phone book dailing from steering wheel controls, voice dailing, and also has GPS Speedo and additional engine data, such as boost pressure levels.

Hi Bails, I wouldn't give up on the parrot kit just yet. Do you know model it is? Maybe the issues your experiencing is just a missing VCDS setting? Also do you actually have a microphone installed? You haven't mentioned whether the parrot kit was factory installed or an aftermarket accessory.

It is a factory setup, I know this because I have removed the system to play with an Android set. I could stream music but that was about the limit. I do have a VAg cable but did not try any settings as I am unsure what settings would be required to get the enhancements I am supposed to have?

It seems my memory is fading. Just dug the BT unit out and it is a NOKIA Type HT 3 with VW branding. 1K8 051 730 B is part number. So forget what I said about Parrot. Still I did not get any info on the MFD and if I was to refit my 510 I would like better phone function. So any clues now I have provided the correct info would help.

The following link shows a summary of some of the differences in the modules as well as some of the VCDS settings:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Telephone_Retrofitting

It appears the one you have runs DDP protocol which is for the red MFD but also suggests it is not 3G
Compatible. If that is the case I think it maybe worth upgrading the unit.

Also in regards to the microphone, this can be plugged directly into the Bluetooth unit or into the rns or bridged between both of them. If you voice activation is not working the reason could be that yours is connected incorrectly for the way your trying to activate voice control.

The following has info in this regards:

This is great info, so the question is what unit should I purchase to have all the bells and whistles ? Also wondering where the best place to purchase would be , maybe there is a good deal to be had via genuine VW if this is older technology?

Bails,
I purchased mine form Kufatec Germany, however they have a local supplier. Was very easy to install. I had previously retrofitted the 9W7 , and it was simple as swapping the units over. Plug and Play. The only exception is the Fiscon uses its own microphone as it is not compatible with the VW one. Its is actually a much better microphone. Not a big issue. All up it tool me about a hour and a bit to fit.

Would recommend it above anything else if you are looking at Bluetooth on an RNS510.

I have a spare 9W7 looking for a home, but it won't give you any dashboard functionality.

Hi Stuart,

I'm interested in the FISCON unit also. So with the unit you have linked to on the FISCON website, does it display on the RED MFD of the Touareg? The 9W7 unit I am using also doesn't display on my MFD currently, so I would obviously want this functionality.

Also the MIC I am using is connected into bridge mode via the harness wiring, so that the one Microphone is used by both the RNS-510 and the bluetooth unit.

Do you know if the FISCON MIC can be used in this same way?

Just wanted to jump in and echo Stuart's statements about the FISCON unit. I just installed one myself and couldn't be happier with it. The A2DP offers true stereo streaming, not just mono. There are lots of adjustments you can make to various volume settings including mic gain. And the funcionality and access available through the MFD is really great.

Terrys,

Not sure about the mic, but the FISCON unit does integrate fully with the steering wheel controls. Here is the link to the actual FISCON website which covers the functionality a lot better than the kufatec site. FISCON Bluetooth Freisprecheinrichtung

Would you believe it, I have just got my 9W7 VW Bluetooth unit to pair with my IPhone 5.

After trying all options and just before deciding to lay down my money on a new replacement FiSCON unit. I tried one last desperate attempt to get it to work.

I disconnected it from its harness and left it disconnected for a good 30 minutes to give it a proper power reset. This is the only thing I hadn't tried.

When I reconnected it it registered on my IPhone 5S as an 'AUDI_BT'. What the!!!

For a moment I thought I was picking up a neighbouring Bluetooth device.

I tried pairing the unit with the passcode '1111' and what do you know, my iPhone 5S connected.

The 9W7 still does not show up in my MFD display as I am running CANBUS 1.6 in my T1 but I have full control of it from the RNS510.

It appears the 9W7 is still current with smart phones currently out there after all!

I would still consider the FISCON unit if it gave me an MFD display but not sure if it would display in a T1 CANBUS 1.6 Touareg.

But for now happy with the functionality I have achieved.

Hi Dear,

I have the same issue, and i went to the dealer to find the solution, Unfortunately, he informed me that all the VW Touareg till 2010 model can be used only Nokia devices or iphone 4 !! since the Bluetooth devices in this cars are made by Nokia (as per my understanding from him) so i asked him if there's any solutions or updated version,, he said no !
BUT I CAN GIVE YOU A GOOD SOLUTION without doing any update or software in the car. (I applied for multi SIM card with the same cell phone of mine from our CELLULAR company, and i put it in the iphone 4 then i kept this iphone 4 in the car always:)) so when i received calls, both devices - the iphone 4 and my iphone xs are ringing at the same time - but i'm keeping my iphone 4 always in silent in the car and also hearing the music from it.
hopfully the above solution will help all the cluber facing the same issue.
thanks
