Don't know if it's permitted to setup a Local Thread, but what the heck.

We'll have to set up a meet sometime, maybe go play around on some trails or something...

Matt
As long as you are playin on the trails in the Treg and not on the bike of your bike. You need full protection when offroading!! :drunk:

Trip to Caliente

After an out of the way detour to St. George for breakfast at the Cracker Barrel (love the Uncle Hershel’s breakfast), we headed back south again. At mile marker 100, which is just north of the Logandale exit you will find the Carp/Elgin exit. The road starts out paved as it parallels I-15 then turns to a well groomed dirt road as it heads north. It's about 40 miles to Carp. Left at Carp will take you to Moapa, right takes you to Caliente. Good dirt road for 15 or so miles then it changes to paved. Three years ago there was quite a flood and they have not repaired the paved road to Caliente but it's still passable. Be careful as some places are washed out, and rock slides cover parts of the road.

Hey, I'm from Vegas too!!!! ok, guess you knew that. Making a report.

I'll have to look at the Caliente trails more. Many of the Vegas 4x4 clubs often play near Logandale. I recently had fun over at Apex for an all-clubs Toys-for-Tots meet - mostly sand dunes (dump the air, ESP-off, weeeeeeeeee!!!) with a few interesting rocky areas to climb up. A few of us have been talking about doing Potato Gulch behind Red Rock.

I also recreate in the Tecopa area - Alexander Hills, Sperry Wash, Western Talc, Furnace Creek and Kingston area. Its where I learned to play.

Yes, we got to get a meet going. We did a bit of a dry run learning how to do one for the Colorado Rally convoy - Vegas stop; our notes and picture spots are fairly fresh.

'08 Rally

Well I'm thinking about attending the '08 rally and my '08 Touareg V6 is rather stock. What do you guys recommend I do to better equip my ride, or is stock good enough?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

#10 ·
Most of our rigs are stock. The only real upgrades people have done are skidplates (from MountainLord) or better tires for off-roading.

#11 ·
The Colorado trails are moderate - more than dirt roads but no serious hazards, some mild talus areas. There were a few Stock-Steels that banged undercarriage a couple times, nothing even came close to messing with the rockers. Everywhere I have been since has been tougher.

Better tires would be a good thing, especially tires with sidewall protection. I counted three sidewall cuts from the group, two of them fatal. You dont need to go my way with 32" BFG's; but any tires larger than the stock 29's would help. If you attend, you will be required to have a full-size spare.

#12 ·
You don't need to invest alot at all other then the full size spare. Get with either Matt or Karl to have them tell you about the other stuff you should have with you.
It would be nice to have the beefier tires offroad but Matt and I did just fine with the tires we drive around with all the time. I am on Nokian WR's and Matt was on Perelli's I beleive. I am considering some other wheel and tires for the rally only to gain a little more clearance, but you don't have to do that.
I came away from the rally with one flat tire and a minor dent in one rocker. I know where I got the dent and what I did wrong to get it. So I feel I can do better next time around. You don't have to be worried that you have steel suspension for you can get through anything on the rally, you just have to be more percise with wheel placement.

I stand corrected... did not know you got a rocker hit.

Mine is heavily mangled from other trails, including one hard hit courtesy Gold Mtn that echoes up into the body.

Good news.. rockers are very affordable to fix - its just thin soft metal that can be readily undented and recoated with black spray goop. One body shop here in Vegas quoted $200. I wont fix them until lease return, so I'll bash 'em some more!

Can anyone recommend a nice motel/hotel in Ouray for the Rally this summer? The dates apparently have been set and I'd like to make reservations as early as possible.

#16 ·
I have not seen where Chris aka Aircooled has mentioned anything about dates for the rally yet. There are hotels all over the town, so I don't think you would have too much of an issue finding a place unless you wait too long. Some of us got together last year and rented a house.

#19 ·
While they make sense, dates may have been speculative. I'd wait for an actual announcement.

#20 ·
Well looky there. I don't even remember posting that.

Well, the good news is, THE DATE IS SET! July 21-25, 2008 in Ouray, CO
The bad news is, at this point we are going to only allow a limited number of folks attend still. The total vehicle trail count is going to be 18 or less, much like last year, and I'm going to have to allow preference to previous year attandees.

Unlike the FJ rally, at this time I don't want to see this event turn into a massive monster that will require financial commitment on behalf of the organizers and the participants. Anything larger and we will have to start pulling permits. This started as a 'vacation' for most of us, and I'd like to see it stay that way for the immediate future.

Look for a more official announcement as well as details as to how we are going to allow newbies to meet up and join us on this years rally.

Lookin for an offroad set of tires for my V6. I went to Discount Tires and they recommended changing up to 18's and using Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about these tires.

Arkarch - Dan at Findlay VW says hello.

#22 ·
If you're looking for an offroad setup, why on earth would they recommend going to a larger rim? That will reduce your overall sidewall height, and make the tires more prone to pinch-flatting.

Personally, I'd run like hell from that Discount store.

I do like the looks of those Wrangler SilentArmors though, although I know nothing about them.

I got an out-the-door price quote of $554 on a set of four 265/70-17 General Grabber AT2s from Tire Works at Boulder Hwy and Russell Road. That was before Christmas though, so who knows what it is now. I was pissed though, because I could have got them for about $58 (yes, 58 ) each (before mounting etc) when they had a sale on that I just missed last December. I was a day too late. :(

Matt

PS-That's not Dan Fry at Findlay, is it? Last I saw him he was out at Findlay Chevy.

#23 ·
Nope that's Dan Kerrigan. Big tall guy.
Thanks for the heads up. I didn't mention price, but I knew they were way too high.
That's a good deal for those Generals. About half the price of the Goodyears.
If I'm going to chew up some tires, maybe less expensive is the way to go.

NKAWTG - I like Dan Kerrigan. Got my Touareg from him.

y2phly - On Service, its fair to say we all have some stories to tell. I routinely have Findlay handle my service - they do have a shuttle and have not had issue with my West Russell/215 location.

I dont know of any independent shops specializing in Touaregs. You may want to try Gaudin Porsche on Sahara. There is a Porsche club in town, so maybe ask him..

Just of note - for auto-body work - Sam's Auto Body on West Meade near DI/Valley View. Good people, good cars, recs from Porsche club and my detailer who handles Steve Wynn's collection.

I would, under no circumstances, let any non-specialty shop lay hands on your Touareg. Look past the VW emblem and you really have an offroad Porsche. Even in VW shops, only special-trained mechanics are allowed to work on them.

Vegas REGulars - we really need to schedule a meet :). I'll suggest later next month (should have my BFG's back on). We really should think about hitting Apex for some off-ESP dune fun before the county takes it over and screws it up.

#26 ·
NKAWTG - oh, regarding offroad.. still think 17's. You need all the sidewall you can get. When all 6000 lbs of Touareg are set on one wheel against a rock, and tire is bulging out big time, thats when you'll know why :)

That said, 18's would be the limit.

#27 ·
Dan has been very patient with us. It took us nearly two years to come around to a Touareg. Climbing maintenance costs on our 02 Passat Wagon finally pushed us to a decision.
I absolutly concur with your service recommendations. The Touareg is a complex machine and requires a specialists skilled hands for even some mundane tasks.

transmission problem

My '04 V8 automatic Touareg has problems with transmission. In 3rd gear it rattles and also my triponic doesn't shift.

It has 42k miles and im wondering if this would still be under warranty?

If not can is it worth it to buy extended warranty from an online extended warranty and which one.

#29 ·
Should be... Powertrain is to 60k / 5 year.

Warranty

I would not hesitate to call Findlay if you are not sure about Desert. A tranny replace is hugely expensive otherwise.

#31 ·
Thanks for the help. I took my 'reg to findlays and the draftshaft needs to be replace. also they are replacing my passenger side airbag , under warranty. :D
Can you describe the symptoms you had which led them to replace the driveshaft?

Matt

#33 ·
Very Good.

From reading these boards, the drive shaft appears to be one of those issues that has plagued the first model year 2004's. Is your VIN before or after 45000 ?

I’m thinking about a Vegas area off-road trek. Don't know where or when just gauging interest right now.
We could keep diffuculty below a 2 to encourage most any Treg owner.
I'd like to do it before it gets too hot, or we could go up north somewhere.
