My 07 V10 TDI has 115,000 miles, engine light came on and took to VW Dealer.

They said diesel particulate filters need replacement, $5,000 cost mainly due to labor cost of having to remove engine to replace filters. Any thoughts or alternatives?

Thank you,

Winchester

Find a good independent that works on VWs. Get a quote from him. Also talk to some truckers and find out who works on their DPF issues and talk to that person/shop.

Firstly try a forced DPF regen or add some DPF cleaner to the fuel tank and see what happens especially in conjunction with an 'Italian tune', in other words hammer it for a good half hour or more to get the exhaust nice and hot to clean everything out. x 2 for Mike N's comment, engine does not come out to replace the DPF's but they are dear and there are 2 of them on the V10 so $5000 for the pair is maybe cheap. Here in AUstralia they cost just nder $5000 each to buy from the dealer but you in the US of A get parts WAY cheaper than us. John

Another option to consider is a tune to remove the DPF regen and monitoring from the engine computer calibration. Along with the tune you will need to gut the DPF housings. Malone does a nice tune and even if you had a shop gut the DPF for you it would still cost much less than half your quoted price for replacement. Added benefit is better gas mileage, better throttle response, more power and much reduced EGR driven build up in the intake etc.

I had a DPF warning and limp home mode so plugged Vag com in. It advised a 20 min steady drive then a forced REGEN by inputting a code. (I was just thinking $$$$$$$$$$$) :( I done the regen then took the car for another drive and the error came up again. I again plugged in vag com, it remembered regen results and told me the DPF pressure differential sensor is giving inconsistent out of range readings, it gave me the part number. I ordered one ($100) installed it and voila no more fault.

Jeez we are about to ship out our V10 to Sydney so at that price might just gut my DPF's and have the remap work done!!!! :)
