A few of you blokes have installed UHF Tx/Rx. Just wondering if you can post some pics of installations and aerial mount? Not too much space in the cabin for a unit, unless it's a split unit.

UHF

I don't have any pics however I have a GME "split unit" the small head unit I have installed on the LH side of the wheel just above the hand/footbrake, the main box is cable tied up underneath the dash and I have used a sticky glass surface mount antenna on the inside of the L/H side of the windscreen adjacent to the pillar. Very unobtrusive and works suprisingly well.

I will endeavour to get you some pics.

This is the 3rd car I have had this unit in and if I was to buy again I would opt for a model which has the speaker and controls incorporated in the microphone.

Hope this helps,

CamB

Huge amount of info and pics under "mobile electronics" thread. I would suggest go for split unit. Z-mount at side of bonnet, route cable through available grommet into cab. I mounted the (small) main unit on passanger side of centre console in footwell, and mic/speaker/panel (all in one) on left side of steering column. I can't wait to catch up with "V10-Downunder" to see how he routed his HF cable.

All info helps. I had a split Uniden unit I installed in a Kluger and nicely tucked it all way. But the Treg is not so simple to get stuff hidden but remote head unit is the way to do it. Any pics of value, esp of your surface mount aerial. I tend to do a lot of looking around before I commit to something with this vehicle. Seems to pay off with this forum.

I recently had installed (@$150) an Icom IC-440 which has everything contained in the microfone including the speaker, the "head" unit was placed in the cargo area next to the CD stacker.
I chose to go with a through-glass antenna mounted on the drivers side fixed rear window, very inconspicuous as it looks like a mobile antenna.
I find reception a little "iffy" with a lot of broken transmissions received, so I think my antenna reception is not as good as having a full size antenna mounted off a "z" bracket on the front.
I am rather fond of Icom, used it in marine applications before and is made in Japan.....quality gear.
If anyone is interested I can take some pics of my set up and you can go from there, just ask.

I have a split system also, the GME TX 3440. The unit is mounted under the dash on the passenger side. The handset just sits in the centre console drink holder and can be disconnected via a RJ jack (see pic). When not in use the cable tucks away up under the centre console and the handset gets put in the glovebox. No holes. Aerial is a Laser, transparent on-glass, see here, Laser Antenna . Just sticks to the windscreen like your rego label. About to fit a new one. My windscreen just had an altercation with a stone.
Cheers

I also have the Icom 440. As stated above, the way it is mounted - totally out of the way and just about no cables showing. I drilled a couple of holes into the gold (sorry, I mean plastic) centre console, and the small unit does not interfere with leg space. Passed the extension cable for microphone under the dash/centre console area and dubble sided tape keeps the microphone within easy reach and out of harms way. Am taking few photo's of tyres on weekend and will endeavor to take some of this setup.

I have the GME unit with remote microphone control. Unit is mounted under the dash and the microphone is mounted in the storage bin of the centre console.

I have a z bonnet mount for the antenna and second one for a mobile phone antenna. You lose a lot of signal with through glass antennas, so I went for best performance. Cables are routed through the firewall.

Bobzed did a good post some time ago with pictures of his install of the same unit.

I am travelling at the moment but can shoot some pics next week

cheers peter

I also have the GME TX3440. The unit is in a space at the top of the glovebox. I have velcroed the microphone to the metal trim on the dash between the glovebox and the radio. It stays there quite happily and doesnt seem to get in the way. I have a connector in the line so the mike can be removed if desired.

is this despite setting the squelch control Tony? I had the same to start off with but after tweaking the squelch(turn it up) there is no 'rubbish' coming thru.

Similar to others I have the antenna mounted off the fender with a z mount and unit sits nicely next to the HVAC unit under the passenger footwell next to the firewall. no screws at all.
The mic wire is routed to the centre console(under the arm rest) and pops out next to the media outlet. The mic is stored there or can be removed and stored elsewhere.

I like the idea of a RJ jack as you have used, I will arange one for mine in due course, thanks for the tip.

I use the same antenna, mounted on the l/h side of the windscreen and find the reception surprisingly good.

Thanks again,

CamB

Still browsing for another UHF, but my son just got one of these GME TX3100 units for his Hilux today - ultra, ultra compact and I reckon it will be the go for my needs:

Nah. Plan B...I'll get a 5w handheld with car kit (maybe a Uniden UH078sx ). I do a fair bit of remote bushwalking and I can use a 5W in my pack to go with my set of 3watters.

Installed a UH078sx today (like in 5 mins) in the Caddy ($355 posted, 2-day delivery, ex-Sydney). Very compact unit. Picked up a signal about 30klms away on the M1. I can get another clip with 2 x screws to secure the car kit in the Treg. As much as I like the fixed sets, I think this one will be fine in the Treg.

Instal GME TX3100

Has anybody installed a UHF in the current (MY12) Touareg.....I am particularly interested in where the main unit has been installed and which antenna was used and where that was mounted......Thanks

Have a good look at one of these, as they're good value. I installed one in the Navara last week. Very compact and a good functional handset with clear speaker.

Easy fit in the Nissan but it'll be a pain in the Treg to route the co-ax. All 3x of my uhf's are Uniden. No complaints. Other option is a 5w handheld UH076SX. I have one in the Caddy - does the job.

The question is actually about the MY12 Treg and placement of unit and antenna. I suggest check the "mobile electronics ......." threads. I could give my experience with '08, but have no idea how the '12 differs.
