Hello everyone,
I've recently acquired '08 touareg 2 vr6 3.6 with 30k miles. Lately, I've noticed transmission has been acting up. At times 1st-2nd feels like a kick as well as 2nd-3rd. This does not happen often but only when in low speed city driving or stop-n-go traffic. Otherwise, transmission works fine. No leaks, slipping, grinding. Has anyone experienced same issues or has suggestions how to address it? Than you.

Try a gearbox reset.

Turn the ignition on, do NOT start the engine.

Press the accelerator pedal firmly to the floor and hold it there for a full 10 seconds.

Release the pedal.

Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

The gearbox has now been reset and will learn how you, rather than the previous owner, drives the car.

Whether or not this will fix the problem, I can't say, but it is quick and free!

That's very low miles for a six year old car.

As per Nikoloz.

But thinking a bit more about your car, one of the problems with low mileage cars is that sometimes they just haven't been used enough.

Is there anywhere you can go to give it what I call a damned good thrashing for an hour or two to blow the cobwebs out of it?

It's the Italian tune-up! And all cars could do with it from time to time.

If you can, don't just leave it to its own devices in D or even S, use the Tiptronic to play tunes with the engine and gearbox and go and have a blast.

Sorry, but I don't pay speeding tickets! I always used to run one way quietly first to check out for rozzers and then come back a little faster . . .

Ok... I tried the 10sec reset and it seems to have resolved itself. Slightly. That kick is still there but not as hard.

I'll try the italian tune-up next and post back. Ultimately, I think I'll do the trans service. I'm not a firm believer of "maintenance free sealed unit" concept.

Nikoloz, thanx (madloba) for the pics. I'll be sure to stay on the top of my mechanic during the service.

I've noticed you fine people are actively knowledgable with these cars and hope to find answers/guidance

I'm trying to get to know it as much as I can before something else pops up.

Having said that, I have list of questions hoping to find answers for....

1. Valve cover gasket has a small leak in back of the engine by firewall. What can be an issue?... Previous owner used bulk oil as I saw on receipts and it was overfilled. According to my mechanic oil had lost its viscosity and needed to be replaced. Mechanic ran engine cleaner fluid thru then filled with 10w40 Castrol synthetic and filter. No more cake on oil fill cap and no oil in coolant. I think head is intact. Engine purrs like kitty.
2. Morning start up I noticed small puff of black smoke... Smells like unburned gas... Disappears few secs later. What can be the problem if any?
3. Morning start/drive hear mild metal grind from engine at low revs and stays that way until engine fully warms up. Is that normal? I've read on some forum it maybe a design flaw. True/False/Serious Problem?
4. At low rev up I hear air huff/puff by the intake... No check engine light no loss of power just sound of air sucking or escaping. What can it be?
5. H&R spring lowering by 1"... Will it help with mild body roll/squats it has with original spring?
6. What recommended service should I perform (after italian tune-up) at this point with 30k miles on this beast?

Thank you...

you are welcome mate (hmm.. :) did you use google translator or do you have someone Georgian nearby ? :) )
well about the oil be very careful what you will use, as far as i know V6 and V8 uses only full synthetic oil,
according to manual and its same in real life as well when the engine is cold and have not been driven more then 5-6 hours V8 are making metal knocking noise for 0,5 - 1 sec and its gone, its cause the oil pressure in tensioners and hole system is low and it needs to build up, so this noise for V8 are normal but i can not say if its normal for V6 engines, hope V6 owners will help.
kind regards
Nikoloz

Your other issue could be the transmission valve body may need to be swapped out. it's a known issue on the first gen touaregs (including facelifts).
