Transmission issue..Gear 5th to 4th. Big shocking...

Hello everyone, I know it has been talked hundreds of times about Touareg transmission shift from 5th to 4th, the big Shocking. Especially when it is heavy load (such like when it goes up to the hills), the car remains at 5th gear for a few seconds, then, a Big Shocking/Banging to 4th gear. Tried trans flush at VW dealer last year, no improvement...This is happening a lot recently, and the Shocking only happens when down shift from 5th to 4th!!

The 2005 Touareg has 160k on it. V6, 3.2 gas.

Asked the local car shop (not the VW Dealer), they quote around $2500 CAD. (Valve Body + labour). Is this gonna fix the problem?

Please, need some advices. I really appreciate!

yep price sounds about right.

It should fix the problem if they install the correct valve body

make sure to a throttle reset once you get it back also

Finally got a quote from the shop (not VW dealer). To solve the problem: rebuilt torque convertor, and valve body replacement.
Total is $5k (parts + labour).

Is this sounds alright??


Also, I heard lots of valve body replacements, but never heard about Rebuilt Torque Convertor. Is that really necessary? I just need the shift shocking to be fixed coz I understand this is a 10 years old car, it can not be everything perfect. I don't know how does the Tourque Convertor work. Do we really need to rebuild in order to fix the shifting problem?

Anyway thoughts will be highly appreciated.

Check this guy out for a new (rebuilt and updated) valve chest. If I was going to replace it, I would only look here. Don't bother getting one from VW. RevMax uses Sonnax valves, which are a much better solution than the factory ones.

This should be the exact one you need, but make sure you double check.

I purchased a new valve body for approx. $2k and had a mechanic install it. No more harsh clunking.

For the torque converter you have to drop the engine which means you might add well spend the extra and do the timing chain.

It depends if you are keeping the car or not and if your timing is out/stretched chain. Just my opinion.

You just need a valve chest. Try someone else.

valve chest and torque converter is completely separate jobs.

Do the valve chest first. I bet you a beer it will sort out your issue. Try to be present when they do some of the work so they can't fit a second hand chest.

Strange that I hop on the forum this morning to discuss this exact issue. The scary bang/clunk shifting started this past weekend and so did the research.

I believe there are some very mechanically inclined members here so I bring to you this:
Has anyone rebuilt their own valve body?

Reporting back from rebuilding the valve body yesterday. Took from 10am to 8pm with all the typical interuptions kids, meals, and troubleshooting typically provide. I'd have rather done this at work on my lift but just didn't work out like that. Ended up on jack stands in next to the house. Better than gravel I guess.
I've included a link for the process, directions, and comments.
Went rather well I believe, just tedious and time consuming.
Supplies and parts cost (not including what tools and supplies I already had on hand) approx only $175.
First drive was impressive right off the start. MUCH smoother shifts (up and down), more torque when accelerating off the start. Today I got to run around in it a bit and was still smiling.

Good. Now change the oil in the front and rear diffs and the transfer box and you will be good for another 60,000 miles.
