Towing Mirrors

I have just taken delivery of a 2015 180 Touareg and my old Caravan Mirrors will not stay on the Touareg Mirrors due to their Tear drop shape.
Can any one advise if they have found a set of caravan mirrors that suit the Touareg Mirrors and will not fall off even when a truck passes.

Milenco have been used and recommended by several folk on here [use the Search facility] and it looks like they are available in Oz too:

I use Milenco.

Absolutely first class piece of equipment.
To further brace them against the wind pressure provided by road trains heading in the opposite direction, I tether some stretchy ropes with hooks, from the mirrors to a secure anchoring point under the bonnet, near the firewall. Not pressure is required, but it does help to reduce road vibration etc.

Another vote for Milenco mirrors, they work great!

Crewie,

Welcome to the Touareg Club, I am sure once you get to experience your new ride you will not want to go back to anything else.

I picked us a set of Milanco mirrors last week in Cairns with my (used) new Trakmaster van, so far other than a bit of vision distorsion due to road vibrations no issues with passing road trains etc, coincidentaly currently we are in Karumba staying next to your mate Gary at the CP, I can show gary what I have and he can pass on the details o you.

Tony...run a pair of occy straps (1 per mirror) from the mirror to an anchoring point, under the bonnet, near the edge of the bonnet (side or more preferred trailing edge, or closer to the windscreen). It just puts enough tension to reduce inherent vibration from vibration etc.

Works a treat for us :)

I agree, Kennie round back is also included.

I know you will love your new ride.

Stu, I have used this style of mirror for a few years - 4 years with my treg.
I have always praised them - lack of vibration, especially.
However, I now notice - shock/horror - wear marks in the paint where the rubber pad sits halfway up the door. May be OK with solid colour and much care to remove any dust prior to fitting, but my metallic is now marked.
Pity that.... I will soon purchase Milenco Grand Aero's. Dub

In regards to Milenco mirrors, they were great with our 2009 Touareg, however with the 2015 Touareg, not good.
Reason is at the bottom of each mirror there is a ridge, which really reduces the grip area or the clamp. The mirrors do no get adequate area to anchor them to the mirror and due to the design of the Touareg mirror the Milenco's must be attached to the bottom edge. I did make some extra pads which did improve the grip but not enough to prevent them flying off when a truck passed in the opposite direction. One very smashed up Milenco, especially when run over by another vehicle. So now have purchased the Reich Excellent View Towing Mirror. They do seem a more secure fit, but time will tell.

this Christmas will see us hitch up the big girl (23'6" Crusader Manhattan Step-up) and head south for some well earned R&R.

I tether my Milenco's via 'occy-straps' to anchor points just under the trailing edge of the bonnet. Not a great deal of tension on them, but enough to stop the Milenco's getting caught in the passing draught of an Aussie triple trailer road train @ 200kph closing speed. Haven't lost a mirror yet.

I'll post photo's when the rig is set up waiting departure )

Mate, I found a set on a US based website that I have been trialling for a few months.
I was fairly skeptical at first but have found they are pretty good they are CAMEC they suction onto the actual mirror glass so no scratching mirror housing or door frames.

They are not overly large and have a curved back so they don't catch a lot of wind and they adjust with your normal mirror adjustment buttons.

Have done a few trips and no worries at all, just need to wipe the suction cup mark off the mirror after use.

They are small, but to be honest I only want to see if something is behind me, I am not looking to see who is in the car following me.

cheers

I've been using Milencos on my 2015 150. As Rossco says, they don't fit well on the bottom edge, but I find they do sit well on the top edge. Where the pads sit isn't flat though, with a step down to the edge moulding. I use a narrow rubber strip to level up the contact area and I haven't lost one yet! (shouldn't have said that though!!). I do tighten them up well and recheck them frequently. An added advantage of using the top fitting is that the mirrors will still fold if required.

Ditto for me. Rubber strip on the top to level off the step down. If I was to search around this site, somebody has already taken photos of the rubber strips on the top of the mirrors. That's where I picked up the tip. Awesome sharing on the forum. :D

And like you, I check them regularly during travel.

I am prone to follow your "method" of tightening Steve_L but have managed to avoid it so far... Heavy handed Harry could be my nickname...

I use 'non-slip' cloth to support the Milenco grips. just not a fan of ensuring a binding grip of 'tightening the screw until you strip it, then backing it off half a turn'. LOL

G'day Bluey, I use the Milenco Grand Aero on our MY16. Attached to the top of the mirror, just need to be fairly tight.
(almost lost one once - first trip with them). Cheers, Dub

I had a pair of those from my previous vehicle.
They went onto the Touareg without any issues but I made the mistake of not tightening them enough and/or not checking them (maybe the cushioning strip I added compressed after an hour of driving?).
One fell off and was destroyed by the following traffic. :(

I have gone through two Milenco Mirrors, all lost on relatively narrow Outback sealed Highways both times by large B Doubles. All on the Drivers side. I have tried everything ie cutting slots in the rubber pads to fit over the rim on the bottom of the mirrors, using pads on the top to increase grip and checking the tightness of the clamps etc.

I have just purchased a set of Brunsgaard Towing mirrors which have three clamps and according to the Australian Distributor are suited for the Touareg Mirrors. I saw a set fitted to a Touareg last year at Emerald and the owner claimed that he had no problems. Heading off mid July for trip out to central Qld so I will soon find out how they go.

Bugger about the Milencos.

We use a small strip of non-slip material (use that in the drawers of the caravan to reduce/eliminate movement of glassware etc).

A return crossing of the paddock with the Milencos fitted both on top of the mirrors and from underneath produced no problems whatsoever. I do tether each of the Milenco arms via stretchy cord/strap to an anchoring point under the bonnet to help reduce vibration and potential movement from passing road trains etc.

I have the Milenco Aero and had the drivers side always just coming loose with the wind buffeting.

I came across the genuine "V Pads" as per photo on the right. The ones on the left are the normal flat pads.
With the Touareg having a raised lip on the bottom, with the tapered pad, there is no way they can come off even if a bit loose

I also use an "occy strap" which I have a piece of synthetic string ( approx 4mm dia) that is tied around the top hinge support and long enough to feed through the door gap with a loop that extends approx 50mm outside when the door is closed. The straps pull way from the car so no rubbing on the duco. I leave the string permanently attached and it just hangs inside the door gap.
