I was looking to buy a 2007/08ish to pull a travel trailer.I read that they are rated at 7700lbs,and the trailer i am considering is a Puma 19RL with a dry weight of 4600lbs. It would only be my wife and I so we wont have a lot of gear.I was a little concerned at approaching the 6000lb range and was wondering how the V6 would do ,or should I be looking for a V8. it would be mainly shorter trips of 6 hrs or less.

and the TDI would be even better.... :D

Perfect tow vehcile for your application. My big boat loaded up is over 6000 lbs...my initial concern was the relationship between the relatively short wheelbase of the Touareg and the length of the trailer...(25+ ft).

No porpoising effect at all....love the way it pulls...I use Tiptronic when towing to keep rpms where I want 'em on uphill grades....I have an earlier v8....no power issues at all.

Well the search goes on for a Touareg to buy. Im rather set on a v8 with air susp.then the trailer will probably be a 4600-4800lb trailer tandem axle streamline type. i hear they area easy tow,but am a little concerned over the length.it should be about 26-28 fett from rear to hitch tip....any thoughts ?

i'd recommend getting a Touareg with Air Susp if you can find it. The touareg tows like a big SUV (Tahoe, Armada, etc.) You have nothing to worry about.... it amazing.

I tow a 2010 28' airstream with my 2010 TDI on air suspension. I have the Reese dual cam sway control and I only use the lightest WD. Properly set up, it tows beautifully.

so im getting killed here trying to find a a air susp. model. can i tow just as easy with a standard suspension. the trailer will be about 4500 5000 lbs with a toungue weight of maybe 450 to 500 lbs. . i so want to get a touareg but this suspension thing is driving me nuts.

You can tow just fine without air... but... I am going to guess you will regret not waiting to find one with Air. Towing with air is pretty amazing. You can have 4 adults in the car and tow your rig and hardly know it's back there... no rear susp sag, etc. I have air on both my Touareg and Q7 (same system on both) and it's the one feature i would never go without. I tow a 23' Malibu Wakesetter... no clue how much it tips the scale all loaded up but i would guess 6K ish.

I towed my Jayco 25Z with my steel suspension V8. It towed just awesome...i ran around 30K miles with that setup (while towing).

Air is nice but steel isn't crap..like Golfstream says, work on your setup (weight, hitch etc) it is KEY to any towing experience.

My boat and trailer weigh 5000lbs. and it has a tongue weight of 500 lbs. I have no problem towing it with my Touareg that has standard suspension.

im wondering if the air suspension option is availbe in the v6 models? I was looking to tow and thought the v8 might do better but wondered if the v6 had that option in the suspension.

They had the option but are harder to find since I believe with a V6 it was by order only.

Anyone have experience with a 3/4 ton diesel truck in comparison to the V6tdi? I currently tow with a Cummins and would like something a little more nimble, luxurious, fuel efficient, and wife friendly. How much difference will I notice pulling a 6000 lb tandem axle boat & trailer. I am hoping that the lighter weight and 8 speed will offset some of the lower torque offering.

I've towed a 6K lbs boat/trailer combo with the 2011 tdi and it's fantastic. I'm sure it's nice to have air; I had it in my allroad and it was useful in keeping the car level when I towd a 3K lbs boat, but I have no complaints at all with the 2011 suspension on the T-Reg. With roughly a 600lbs tongue weight, the car handles quite well and seems very well balanced. While the T-Reg's air seems like it's been more reliable, I wouldn't go with air again after having to replace several of the bags on the allroad. Just one more thing I'd have to worry about.

Bottom line for me is that the 2011 is perfectly fine for towing even without air.

BTW, how much load capacity is left once you have four adults and some luggage in the T-Reg? Doesn't seem like that leaves anything for tongue weight.

Just got back from a trip all over Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. 2800 miles in 2 weeks in our 2007 V8. I pulled a 23' Airstream that weighed about 5700lbs dry, but was almost always loaded with full water (extra 250lbs or so) and some grey water though I often emptied this, and full propane (adding 60lbs to the tounge weight. It was also loaded down with gear and food.

In general I would say the trailer probably weighed about 6300lbs - but that is just an estimate.

Most of the driving was in the mountains between 5-10k feet elevation. The t-reg did great overall. I'm not sure I would pull that much weight up Teton again with 10% grade. It was working very hard to pull it up, and I had to let it downshift a few times to keep from crawling up. But beyond that, it pulled like a dream and I blew by a lot of rigs being pulled by bigger vehicles. I got somewhere around 12mpgs on the trip average, but that is from the trip computer and probably not very accurate.

Thinking of trading it in for a TDI soon. Would like the improved torque and better gas mileage for daily driving. But I can't complain about the V8.
