Touareg Light Bar Install

Sharing a few pics of my led light bar install. The addition will help when offroad and travelling the country and outback roads.

Took forever to drill the first hole in the front bar. Hooked up the wiring - permanent positive from the box by the jump start terminal & switched from the passenger side fuse box.
Before and after pics show what a difference it makes. will drive around a bit more at night to do final adjustment.

Nope, but seeing you're in a left hand drive country go to the opposite side of the bonnet, you will see the grommet on top left side - it's otherwise used to run the bonnet release cable for right hand drive vehicles

Quite easy, pop the bonnet and look for a rubber grommet further inside from the bonnet hinge.
Make a hole in the grommet and push thru a steel wire, this will pop out by the fuses on the side of the dash where you hook it to the high beam signal

In support of the above found this thread as well, with wiring diagram.

Here's what's behind the lower grille on the T3. Solid metal bumper/bracket to attach a hidden light bar or whatever if one desires.

There's not much behind the grille, here is my mounting pics before and after on the 7L (T2), you can see the bar mounting holes in the 1st pic.

Doubt there is much difference with the 7P's.

I see what you mean Tony. All the metal is much lower than where I want to mount some spot style LEDs. Did the hidden light bar behind the grille on a Chevy truck I had. Plenty of room in there and lots of places to mount. I'll pull some trim pieces off and take a look from above to see if there is a spot a bit higher. The pic I posted of the TDi on the Pan-American HWY appears to have those mounted where I want mine. That's a nice clean install BTW. Thx!

Looking good Juha.

Has anyone tried mounting a similar type auxiliary light on the top of the painted bumper itself? I haven't looked behind but I figure there must be a steel support or bumper beam behind the painted plastic bumper. IF the top rests on that steel maybe it can be drilled through.

Does not the fact that the light-bar, being behind the grill, prevents any side illumination due to the depth of the plastic grill itself?
I mounted a 20" curved light-bar directly above the number plate mounting, making my own mounts and screwing them right the way
through to the bumper itself. Powering is similar to your own, although the switch is mounted via double sided tape to the fascia on
the right side of the steering column. Due to it being curved, I elected to go full spot, 30 degree spread, illumination according to the
sales blurb is 1 Lux at 480 metres, and I have no doubt about the claim as the light output and limited spread is enormous.
This is a far cheaper way of upgrading the Touareg lights as the unit cost $41, and a loom, complete with switch and relay, $13.
Not really, the spread is pretty good across the sides, but i too was apprehensive about it first.
$41 for the bar!? I dunk mine in mud and water so wanted an IP68 rated with good light output and that would bear the aussie corrugations. So far so good, put i paid SO much more!

An IP68 rated lightbar of good quality and output will set you back a few hundred dollars.
But if one isnt going to dunk their Touareg in mud and water then any chinese make will do then ofcourse, it will be much cheaper.
DIY installation will be much cheaper too, atleast here in Oz.
Anything custom as it is with the Touareg doesnt come cheap.
Then there is the real use of a lightbar vs cool to have.
I recommend it for outback trips, especially if dawn and dusk will be part of your adventures ?

How did you guys go about running the power wire up to your lights or light bar? I'm getting ready to mount a light bar on the cargo rack on the roof of my Treg and I'm trying to figure out how to run the power wire to it.....without making it stick out like a sore thumb. How are you guys running the power wires up to your lights on the roof?

You could route the cable up through the hood along the edge of the windshield. I would think it would blend into pretty well there. From there you'd have a small distance to get from the top of the windshield to the track for the rails.

Futher on the legality of led light bars in Australia ... Unsealed 4x4 Magazine has just produced an article saying that ADR13 allows the fitting of up to 4 additional lights (and a light bar with many lights is classed as one light so long as they operate simultaneously from a single enclosed assembly), but that they must not obstruct the driver's view - so having them mounted above the top of a bull bar is not legal if it is in the driver's view. There is not anything in the ADR that prohibits them being mounted on the roof, but enquiries by Unsealed 4x4 found that they were OK on the roof in QLD, ACT, VIC, TAS, NT and SA, but NOT OK in WA or NSW.

The rules governing work lights mounted on roof racks also differ State to State! For the full article, subscribe to the free online mag.

Is it any wonder why we can't elect a Prime Minister outright, without using preference votes!

So, if there are any WA or NSW Police on here, will a vehicle from an OK State driving in to a NOT OK State be pinged for a roof mounted led light bar? And will it make a difference if the bar has a cover over it?

Regards, Mike
