Touareg for towing a 2800 lb car?

I've done a few searches here in the forums and have read that it's perfectly okay to tow with a Touareg. But I've also found information searching Google that says the Touareg is not a tow vehicle.

I don't own a Touareg. I'm considering buying one. I will be towing a car to the track at least 5 times a year. It weighs 2800 lbs and the trailer wouldn't quite double the weight. With tools I'm guessing somewhere near 6000 lbs total towing weight. I will be going through mountain ranges up here in the Rockies sometimes. I want something I can be confident in. I've been looking at V8 Touaregs with air suspension.

My other choice would be a used 2007 Tahoe. I know the Tahoe can handle anything I throw at it. Being Treg owners I'm sure you'll cringe to hear that. I just want to know whether I should feel comfortable buying a Touareg for towing or if I should lean towards the Tahoe. I'd appreciate honest feedback from owners.

I've read about the V6 TDI coming out next year. I might consider that later but I need something soon.

Thanks folks.

One quick answer.. V10 TDI. It can pull a Jumbojet, so it should suffice for your needs.
Officially I think it has a max governed towing weight of 3.500 KG, which is something like 7-7500 lbs.

Besides the Max Gross Weight limit, the key to towing with any vehicle is to make sure you stay withing the Max Gross Tongue weight limit, which has more to do with weight and balance (ie. axle location) than gross weight.

Someone posted an interesting CBS video on a VW Touareg commercial with regards to towing an Air Stream trailer. The Max Gross of the trailer was not the issue. . . tongue weight was.

Welcome to the group

Plenty of people here tow trailers with their Touaregs. They are rated at 7700 pounds with the OEM hitch setup, regardless of engine size. The V8 and air suspension would make for a great tow vehicle. The V10TDI would be the absolute best choice for towing, but the V8 pulls plenty of trailers for plenty of people.

Whatever you read on Google is pure BS. These things are built like tanks, and plenty of people here have proven that fact. Search around here for trailer towing, or check the whole subforum on here where it's discussed.

My V6 tows a small trailer (about 1800lbs) just fine, going 80mph on I-40 is not a problem as long as the climb isn't too steep. The V8 probably wouldn't even notice a trailer that weight. Also, the 6-speed automatic seems to have a gear for every occasion, unlike my buddy's '03 Expedition. That damn 4-speed auto hunts badly between 3-4th gears while climbing hills, especially while towing. My 6-speed grabs 4th and runs up the passes just fine.

Search for towing on here, and make your decision. Also, check out vwvortex.com, in the Touareg forums there. Many people tow with these things.

And, we off-road them too. I'll bet the finds on Google will poo-poo that too.

Good luck,
Matt

I pull a 21' boat with my '05 v8 with air suspension. Like Matt's friend, I used to tow with an Expedition, albeit a '97. There is absolutely no comparison between the Treg and the Expy - the Treg handles the 5000lb boat and gear far better than that Expedition did. And it gets better gas mileage TOWING than the Expedition did NOT towing!

Just thought of something - is there a "frontal area" restriction on the Treg? The Expedition had one (can't remember what it was), but the Treg is a considerably shorter and narrower vehicle. Just thought I'd ask.

if you have air sus., then the egg levels itself with the trailer so your butt wont hang. v8 egg has more than 300 horsepower for your towing needs also with just as much torque. im sure you would be hapy with the egg, it is a lot nicer than the tahoe too, but is not as large, but that means better gas mileage. its your choice, but i love my egg and will prob get another when i hit 100,000 miles

Thanks guys. The V10 is out of our price range. We're looking at 04-05 V8's. I found one local with 40k, air suspension, towing, nav, etc. Loaded for $24k. We're thinking about checking it out.

We have an '01 A6 and the interior is almost identical. The 07 Tahoe isn't bad on the inside compared to their horrible older models. But I still like the Touareg interior better.

Sounds like it should be fine for towing. Thanks again! Hopefully next time I post in here I'll be an owner. :)

Best load I've had connected to my previous T-reg was 10500lbs(heavy overload I know).
It pulled away like nothing. Only thing to be very careful is tonque weight!
Im constantly using 6600lbs trailer with T/now Cayenne without any hesitation.
I cant recommend anything better for towing (exept Volvo-White perhaps ;)

The Treg is powerful, like mentioned before, Towing with OEM is 7700lbs. With aftermarket you lose a few hundred pounds. Don't skimp on the extra cylinders if you are thinking about buying one. V8 or 10 if you want to pull. There is no low gear for towing, so be sure to be under warranty. I would worry about Tranny problems, or leaky gaskets down the road.

Here's what I tow..boat is approx 4500# (shown with my old V6) and the travel trailer is approx 6000# loaded w/a weeks worth of gear (shown with my current V8) ...like many have said: Towing is a non-issue.
