Finally, no more worries when I come to that high running river, creek or waterhole now I know I can cross it safely without being stranded in the middle of it.
I found somebody who thought they could fit one up. We looked at a Safari snorkel that had the same angel and only would need some minor modifications, you beaut I thought, and dropped the Touareg of one afternoon in early May to investigate a bit further. Two Days later I got a call and was told, no way mate we only can fit a 1” pipe through there just not enogh space mate, what a bummer.
So back home I decided to look up on the internet and looked up the Touareg blog from the world safari, Yep there they were with a Snorkel on the left side. Left side? Hey let’s have a look under that hood again, some copies from the net later I was standing down at Oposit Lock discussing with Ian and Stephen. Yes that would work was the consensus and here we are finally and it works.
On the GTG on next saturday it will get some more testing:evil_laugh:

Obviously, I see you hooked it up to the air intake. I am curious, what do you do about the transmission and / or differential breathers? More gear oil changes?
The front diff breather is on the driverside next to the air filter box at 930mm the rear is just under the fuel intake at about 1000mm, the centre one is supposed to be on the oppsite side of the front breather but I have not found it yet, maybe somebody knows whereit is.
The next step is to go to Bill buckle service and see what they can do to extend them higher up. But as they are reasonabbly high up it is not the most urgent matter. I will also have to look at sealing some electronic stuff, mind I don't plan to drive through deep water very often it is first to not kill the engine in the outback as when you suddenly hit a hole that is deeper than expected. Water above 900mm my start to float the car anyway.

great stuff Markus!...i guess there is no room to put the same in a V10 then ....

all diff breathers are high enough I think......unless you want them to be extended to the roof level!

Hi Singh,
Lets have a look under the hood on saturday;)

Looking at the family album, the breathers dont appear to be that long for the gearbox and final drive, the lines are about 900 long but dont seem to go up anywhere. Could be wrong though.

Nice one. Nice colour too [old school as we say here in Blighty . . . and the same shade as mine!]

Wonder who first had the idea of going right across the engine with the piping? Good lateral [literally] thinking.

Well guys,
I have just got of the phone with Safari snorkels and left my details with their RND department and was told that they have been thinking on making one but have not had a vehicle as yet to carry out 3D cad scan. So i left all detail with them and told them that they can have the car to get it all done, If they do go ahead with it it will be 6 months before they are available for production.
Can some one please post up a photo of V10 TDI engine bay so that they can see where the air box is in the engine bay.

Will keep you posted on progress of this.

Cheers Stan

I just did a 3D laser scan of mine today ...

I was testing a few ideas that I had for making shinny black scan easier. I haven't processed it yet. I did four scans with the hood open.

As I said, I was testing various techniques. Shinny black is an absolute bitch to scan so I took a few minutes and did a test on various ideas I have. I ended up with 43 scan head locations. I have used my cars before, guinea pigs that don't complain. This is a pic of the scan cloud of my Atom reduced to be placed in a crystal globe

I am doing several projects based upon the scan information now. You never know where you will end up until you try. This was very early on building the frame from the scan information.

I scan buildings for a living, this is more what if stuff ...

Hi Sparewheel,
As I wrote they are in Brookvale, Sydney. You probably could order one from them and have it installed in Perth. Make sure your Touareg is a R5.
Keep in mind Oposit Lock are franchises. I don't know howe much they collaborate. Any good Mashining, welding shop shoul be able to make you one up, then a willing mechanical workshop shuold be able to fit it. From what I could see it would work with a TDI6 to as there is space on the passenger side as well

The thought has ocured, sort of faintly, do you think it necessary, have other snorkle have it. I think I could easely put one in.

I would have thought you would suck a lot of water thru that snorkel on a rainy day. Toyota’s have a catchment cup in the bottom of the air box with a “flap” that closes with the air pressure of the engine. No good if you stall in deep water though! I believe some ram heads are designed to force the water to the back of the snorkel where it trickles down and out some drain holes. I would talk to the installer to make sure.

I just looked up safari snorkel, as my ram head is made by them, according to them it is safe and expells the water as Stuart mentiones in his replay.
here is the excerpt

After seeing that safari edition again, yours seems to be the hands down superior version. I especially like the use of all rigid plumbing rather than flexible which, well, flexes. As others have said, if the issue of moisture within the snorkel is addressed, then this is the Treg snorkel. Well done man! Bow Down

If you have a look at the lower front edge of the snorkel cap you will see a small square opening. If these are the inlets that I believe they are, then the have an internal water trap which prevents them from ingesting water from rain and spray.

Marcus, I think you have scored a gaol with this one!

Would be interested if they agree to run with it...please keep us posted.

Stuart.

Hi Sam,
I'm Travelling at the moment so have no access to my notes but if memory serves me right it was a Pajero fitting one.
