Hi everyone. Just spent an hour reading all the posts, really wish I had ordered one for my 03/04 V8 but only came across thread today.
1 - Singh are you still selling your skid plate?
2 - Oulslurper where did you order your brakes from as that is a good price.
Sounds like a lot of people have put in a lot of effort and need to be congratulated
Re: brake bits, I'm currently in process of tracking down local OEM after market prices for ALL treg brake bits. probably still a week or 2 away from a full list. John

I picked up after market disc's and pads from this mob for under 50% OEM, seem to work very well

My Skid plate came off again, to go to the dealer and have an oil leak checked. My level of mechanical aptitude is such that I couldn't work out how to reinstall the original plastic plate. Which post service has now been replaced.

My skid plate is sitting in the garage, and frankly my enthusiasm for climbing under the car to reinstall the aluminum plate is low, particularly as with a young child, I don't see much off roading in my future.

Your welcome to make me a offer for it. I'm still of the opinion, that unless you are competent with the tools, this isn't the kit for you. That said, the only tools actually required are a ratchet set and Allen keys.

Hi dmm,
I have no aptitude for mechanicle stuff either and I leave mine one, the service people take it off when they need to and put it back on, never had an issue. Why not ask them to put it back on would not cost the earth.:)

Nah, still not on the 'to do list' as I'm due for a service soon anyway. I gotta try and nut out a drain access point......I'll persist and work it out so the oil goes into the pan. No off-road for some time as I've been using the Treg as a boat tractor....fishing comes 1st at the moment!

My plate ex: Singa sitting in the Garage, due for a 30k service next week. Then on she goes (one bracket pending) Service cots quoted: Sydney: Five dock $760, Chatswood $740 mascot $750 and Hornsby $680 go figure

Plate got some of my attention today. Firstly, cutting a service access point to an eng oil drain ain't going to work due to the stupid location of the plug in the sump. They could have done a better job on that plug. I'm OK with the plate and it's a planned fit Sunday arvo. I've got to hand it to VW with this vehicle; design and production DID NOT communicate with maintenance about access. This vehicle is very poorly designed for service access for components like the alternator and air con compressor to say the least.

Mine is out of warranty so I'll look at annual service very carefully regards to the non-essentials that push up the $'s. My thoughts are to source an independent VW mechanic in Brissy with good Euro car knowledge and get the more costly stuff done via that option. So far, my annual costs have been reasonable; less than $400 pa. The other thing is Tregs do not have good resale value. I mean, take a look at what V6 TDI's are going for now. Not worth the overinflated cost of service if it's not going to matter with resale. My Treg replacement won't be another Treg at this stage given that VW can barely step up to the plate in support and cost effective maintenance. Did I read a thread here recently that an owner (US) was quoted $2200 to replace alternator diodes? Drop the donk - you gotta be kidding me! My replacement will have a full 5 year, 150,000K warranty and fixed 5 yr service costs. Bet VW won't offer that!

No fit today. I'll wait till next month after the sump is drained.

Enhancements to Skid Plate...

I have just made a couple of small changes to the skid plate setup to resolve two minor issues.

The first was adding four drain holes to line up with the existing drain holes in subframe members (as suggested by Ewie ).

The second is applying some 100 mm x .5 mm rubber sheet between the subframe members and the plate. This will allow some flex between the plate and the subframe. As the front rails are attached to the body by rubber mounts and the rear cross member is solid bolted I am experiencing some rubbing between the front subframe and the plate. This causes a "groaning" sound when you are going over uneven surfaces.. It really has no impact on things but I don't like noises that I can fix.

All in all minor changes...

I have had the same groaning, or creaking noises with the plate... and was thinking about some rubber... wondering if it'd squeak when wet. I also get a creak noise when starting to accelerate from a stop. I only hear the noises if the windows are down.

Did the rubber cure the noises?

I am just fitting it now. But it makes sense as the front subframe is quite "mobile" when compared with the rear cross member.

Stuart..

For SAM,

The best I can measure is that the V10 Cross Member is 130 mm to the rear of the V6/V8. ( 5.1 inches). Which is exactly as reported by Gerald ..... I think you would be safe with that.

Stuart....

Took the Treg for a test run with the modified skid plate, looks like it is an effective cure for the "groaning' noises.. Tried everything possible and could not get it to make any noises.

If anybody needs some rubber strip, I over estimated by about x 10 , so I have heaps left over.... just PM me. (AUS only as it is not worth the postage o/s).

I'm in Stuart...just send me the cost so I can fix you up for some tape. Plate still not on (maybe this weekend)..........great really, as I can get some benefit out of the trial and error.

Hi Guys,

I have now put the Treg through a few miles with the rubber strips and she is totally "groan" free.. Works like a charm...

Sam, You may wish to make this part of the kit!!

Stuart........

Awesome to hear... these noises are starting to annoy me. Every passenger gets the same explanation... its a skid plate... its cool... the wheel isn't falling off (not that bad). Hah.
