Rough Cold Start - Help

Hello everyone,

I noticed my 2008 Touareg V6 (125k miles) idles slightly rough once it goes down below 1000RPM. Once the car is warmed up and driven, while at idle, the RPM's remain solid. No check engine light. I ran a code reader and it brought up one code:

P000B
"Exhaust (B) Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1"

Any clue as to what this might be? I took it to 2 mechanics and they said "they don't do Touaregs" :frown2:

The code you have given sounds like you may have not have scanned using VCDS.

VCDS is the starting point to get the correct and detailed codes on an VW car.

You should find yourself a good independent workshop which specialises in VW/AUDI.

Hello noobytoogy,

I ended up finding a shop that works on VW's and they told me they ran their code reader and the same "Exhaust (B) Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1" came up. They thought it was carbon build up in the throttle body, so they cleaned it, but it still idles slightly rough in cold starts. They also mentioned if it's not that, then it might be a stretched timing chain, does this sound right?

Sounds like a standard OBD II code.

If you have VCDS (aka VAG-COM), you can read the engine modules and get a more in depth idea of what is going on.

The throttle body has nothing to do with cam shaft position. Sorry, but that tech has no clue what they're doing. Find a shop that is familiar with the VR6 before this other place steals any more of your money.

Or scan it yourself. Get your VCDS from Ross-Tech: Home.

Hi FSJ Guy,

Is the VCDS the software? I have an OBD I & II scanner tool. Would you mind giving me some instructions on how to get a more in depth look at what is going on? thank you so much, i will make sure to never go to that mechanic again, as they info says they are "certified" VW mechanics.

As above you buy VCDS from

Ross-Tech: Home

Yes, the timing chain can stretch on the V6 and to replace it you need to remove the engine. It is a known issue.

My understanding is that you can measure the amount of stretch in the chain with VCDS.

I am not sure a stretched timing chain would be the cause if it doesn't do it all the time.

My 3.6 surges when cold, but only for about 20 seconds and it will go away if I drive away...but only after a shift to second. It has done this for seven years or so until recently. It sounded like a muscle car with a cam. Still had excellent throttle response during surging (no stumbling under throttle), just pure sound. People would comment it sounded odd, but it never impacted drivability or gave a code.

I recently found I was missing the oil cap gasket...seems to have fallen off at some point prior to purchasing back in 09. I replaced and the surge hasn't been back...but that is only a month ago. I kind of think it wasn't this, but there was a lot of oil blow by around the old cap I was always cleaning up...bit of a vacuum leak.

I think a lot depends on how bad the surge is...the VR 3.6 already has a rough sound to it, even when running smooth. Does it die? Does it almost die? Does it the rive normal, but just sounds odd?

Yes, mine surges for about 20-30 seconds then goes back to normal and the RPM's remain steady. It doesn't die, nor does it almost die. Rev's just fine, and doesn't sound odd. I'll have a look at the links, thank you, new to this forum but will try the search option. Picks up real well, doesn't feel like there's a loss of power or anything. Only thing is, there's that code popping up, but they've told me it's a general code so i have to get an in depth diagnostic to make sure what it really is. Thank you, i really appreciate the help.

Did you resolve this? I have the same error code and the same symptoms - surging idle since I bought it in fall of 2015. I have sort of figured out its worse in spring/fall and not as bad in summer/winter. Weird. Anyway its thrown this code twice now in the last 3-4 months. I clear it and everything is fine for a while. Fully synth oil is within 3000 miles. Starts and runs fine, no noises and good response.

I'm have the same issue. Keeps getting worse. Car barely starts. Cam slow response code.

140k miles. The engine is going to come out and all timing components replaced. Will update what I find just to give this a bit of resolution.
Hello there, what did you find out? was the timing chain? I have the same issue but I was using 87 Oct gasoline for a while and that started around 120k a few years back now I have 140k and my daughter has been driving for a few months, so it began giving code P000B and P0306 and I just find out that she just filled the touareg the last 2 times with 87 gas when I told her not to use that and just use 95 Octanes which only threw that P000B every few months
