JL85FR:

I have downloaded your Touareg center console repair pdf and will go out and inspect my similarly broken mechanism today.

Driver's side armrest cover is broken.

May I consult you for further questions that I might have? Or any other knowledgeable reader that might assist me?

I'm sorry to reply just now, I didn't visit the site for a long time.... and I do not receive notifications in case a reply is posted...
have you repaired your armrest ?

@JL85FR is there a way to disassemble the armrest without removing the entire unit at the console? You seem to indicate in your instructions that there's some sort of a tab to press that allows removal of the leather cover to access the mechanism, but I don't see how to get to it. There's a black plastic plate that covers the mechanism which I can't take off. It snaps in place and can be released but doesn't slide out. Please see my post here for additional details. Thanks!

Hi Markoffate,
normally you can remove just the cover without dissasembling the entire body. the first think to do is to slide the black plastic parts at the rear of the cover, slide it backward, carefully to avoid breaking the plastic clip. (see my pdf doc at page 4, blue arrow).
once this part is removed, if I remember, you have to slightly lift the back of the cover, then slide it backward.
I have attached my initial pdf document, + a link to Wetransfer where I have uploaded a zip file containing all the photos I took when repairing.
Th link is valid only for 7 days, so try to download the file asap.
once the cover is removed, you may have acess to the front button, certainly a broken plastic part maintaining the spring.
the button is visible here:

Awesome. Thanks! Downloaded and will look - much appreciated. Yes, I released the clips along the edges of the cover and tried to slide it out but it's stuck. I'll try again. And just to be sure we're talking about the same thing, it's the cover plate at the top, not the bottom, as per the pics, correct? the bottom plate slides pretty easily already to expose the mechanism, but it doesn't really help with the removal. BTW, I just found a replacement in perfect condition at a salvage yard for ~$100 included shipping, so may just go with that and swap out the whole assembly rather than bothering with replacement of the latch.

Hi,
the first thing you have to do is to slide the armrest cover forward, remove the rear black plastic plate by pulling it backward with a plastic tool or something flexible.

here the plates are removed (this is the back of sliding armrest top)

and these are the rear plates, they are not easy to remove, but with any plastic tool, you can do it.
the 2 males parts of the plate go inside the slides pipes, and when released, you should be able to slightly lift the back of the cover, and the cover should be free to be removed, by sliding it forward

Great, thanks. That's after I figure out how to remove that flat cover plate though... Can't even get to the rods right now. Or any mechanism. But probably won't bother. Just bought the entire assembly. Should be coming in a few days. I'll play around with getting this thing apart after I have it out.
