Lastnight my engine light came on (steady, not flashing). The manual says it indicates "a fault has developed that has reduced the quality of the exhaust gas (for example oxygen sensor). Reduce speed and drive carefully to the nearest authorized dealer or qualified dealership. Have the engine checked".
Has anyone had any experience with this?
 
I have a 2007 V-10 TDI with 80,000 miles on it. There are 4 Oxygen sensors and I have had 2 sets replaced, one at a time unnder warrenty. The dealer claims they have to drop the engine to replace the Oxygen sensor and it takes three days. Has anyone found a better solution?

I have a 2006 TDI now at Atamian VW awaiting turbo replacement (fortunately under warranty).

While the engine is out, do you recommend replacement of any other components such as sensors? It would be a shame to have one or more of them fail in a month or two and have to pull the engine again.

Thanks for any advice!
 
Much easier to get at whilst the engine is out.. Cheaper than swapping later.
 
Replace o2 sensors, check turbos/seals/leaks, clean intake manifold & egr, replace thermostat/water housing, check all coolant lines and replace if required
Some of these can be done without engine out but ofcourse makes it easy when out
All these are common v10 issues

Have tech scan for codes at your convenience, don't panic. Might be vacuum leak. Common vacuum leak source is snapped connector on secondary air valve(faulty design but simple fix) right on top of engine.

Might be an O2 sensor or cat efficiency issue. I replaced O2 sensors in my 04 v8 myself on ramps in my garage. It's not a diesel.
 
Well guys, the dealer after the visit from the claim adjuster informs me that the diesel leak from the tandem pump will be fixed without dropping the engine, but would access the pump from between the engine and the firewall - is it possible or was the dealer was not up and up with me the first time around?
 
Not long after the tandem fuel pump fix (1 day at the most), I smelt some more diesel through the vents. Took it back to the dealer and now they tell me the driver side turbo is the culprit. Go figure, I told them to check the turbos when they were working on the pump and the goons did not listen, now I am again without my SUV for another 5 - 6 days.
 
That response to smelling fuel doesn't make any sense. Diesel fuel smells when it gets out of the fuel lines where it belongs. The turbos, whether good or bad, have NOTHING to do with the fuel system. They will never cause a diesel fuel smell. Sounds like they are trying to BS you into replacing turbos and, by the way, fix the leaking fuel line at the tandem pump that they didn't install correctly.
 
Thank God I have 100K coverage on the Teg so they must be fooling the adjuster and for that I really pity the insurance company. I was surprised that they replaced the pump without dropping the engine so your suspicion is genuine. And the reason I suspect that the fuel line is leaking is because the smell was gone when I took the VW back but the very next day I smelt it. Any way to be on the safe side I have involved VW USA to ensure that they keep a tab on the dealer. Also, is there a way I can see if there is fuel leak by just removing the engine dust cover? If the dealer does not fix it this time around then I will try to find someone better.
 
A warning to TEG owners in Alabama thinking of taking the veh. to Royal VW of Birmingham - They are no better than un-scruples Street Mechanic. Each time i go there they mess something else and do not take responsibility. This time, after dropping the engine they have managed to mess up the bushing on the control arm, and the reason given you guys are going to love it, diesel leak- go figure!!! And not that alone, suddenly I see a lot of break dust being generated from front - Has got me worried!!
