All, I have a relative that is a VW tech and he just called and let me know that a TB was published yesterday for all Touaregs 2011-2015 for Steering Wheel Shake. I pick my 14 Lux up this afternoon and will insist this TB is completed before I arrive. JEC

I would still drive the vehicle at freeway speed to ensure there is no steering wheel shake before signing on the dotted line.

I have a relative that is a VW tech and he just called and let me know that a TB was published yesterday for all Touaregs 2011-2015 for Steering Wheel Shake.

TB 48 15 01 was issued on 01/13/15

It speaks to the problem and states 36PSI , torqueing nuts by hand and in a specific order.
It also speaks to that the brake disc bolt hub needs to be in the 6 o'clock position.

This should take 90 minutes to complete.

Hopefully this should resolve the issue.

I pick my 14 Lux up this afternoon and will insist this TB is completed before I arrive.

It's a 9 page document that was sent to me via cell phone pics. a large portion of it was illustrations of how to star pattern tighten the lugs.

I wanted to share the highlights and the TB #. For those currently dealing with the problem.

I will say that my dealer is already giving me a hard time about performing this prior to my arrival.

Right now it's 50/50 if I'll be driving a Touareg this afternoon.

Can you start a poll to determine the impact of performing this TSB has had on Treg owners with SWS?

I have had positive results reducing shakes by having/watching a private auto shop perform the exact procedures outlined in the TSB. They also used wheels hangers to properly center wheel on hub.

My experience with VW service center techs trying to fix the issue has been terrible. Each time they have taken the wheels off the vehicle the shakes return exponentially after they put them back on, seemingly without care and precision.

 

Found some TSB's for Touareg but nothing related to the shakes:

Just called VWoA and unfortunately TB 48-15-01 does not exist, the latest TB they have is 48-14-XX. I also would like to see the actual print out if possible.

 

It exisits my dealer showed it to me. I took delivery today but didn't need it since after a 45min test drive it doesn't shake.
The TB, is dated 1-13-15.

I can't explain why the person you spoke to at VWoA don't know of if but believe me it exisits.

You might want to call your dealer directly.

 

Here is a PDF of a service bulletin related to the shake that my dealer gave me.

It is 44-13-01 though. Don't think I've seen 48-14-XX.

I was suspicious of the 48-15-XX one based solely on it calling for all the same measures as the earlier ones (RF balancing to variances less than currently possible with tire manufacturers, precise installation techniques, tire over-inflation, throwing salt over your left shoulder while standing on one leg, etc).

The TB refers to it as a "brake disc bolt / hub thread"

Im not a certified VW tech so I can only go by what is written in the bulletin.

Makes sense, my auto shop teacher in high school (1979) taught us to put wheels on in a similar manner and always tighten in a Star pattern, finger tight first, light pressure with a ratchet and then come back with proper torgue with a torque wrench to finish.
My kids know to do it this way also, it's not Rocket Science.

These cars have a different style hub and lug bolts than I have ever seen on any other vehicle, by orientating the wheel with the brake disc bolt at 6 o'clock position puts one of the 3 centering flanges on the hub at 12 o'clock position to properly support the heavy wheel and using star pattern further promotes getting wheel centered.

The 19" and 20" wheels are very heavy, if they are off center on the hub by the smallest amount all that mass can cause problems staying centered no matter how whell the tire are balanced.

I can't speak to if it's a re-print of an old one.

I will say that my dealer did not want to do it, and insisted my vehicle was shake free.

Fortunately they were right otherwise I would have thrashed their survey.

 

It wasn't just the dealer but also VWoA, lol. And these guys are suppose to be distributing that to the dealers

@OP: Thanks for posting this info. It is quite obvious that the VW engineers still not willing to admit that there is a design problem. But it is better to have woody style TSB than nothing. I called my SA today and asked him if he got that new TSB, but he had no time to check for anything new today. They were using most of the steps described in November'-14 TSB way before it was issued and were very successful in curing shakes on a number of Touaregs.

I sincerely hope this fixes the problem for those affected. But I'm skeptical.

For owners like myself who do not have this issue, I wouldn't change anything. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

 

While most of us knew how to properly torque the wheels, I bet none of us suspected that a position of the hub can make a difference, or does it? I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Does anyone have 21' rims, and if so, is the shake also happening?

 

Got 21s on but have also had 19s and 18s none of which has ever given me issues with wheelshake/vibration. My old GU Nissan Patrol however, well that was another story alltogether. Just about get RSI of the wrists. John
