New Emission Recall

Hi everyone! First post here, I just got a letter in the mail regarding a new "Software Modification" for my Gen 2.1 Touareg. I've previously had my full "fix" done a few years ago, and they're coming up with a new Software flash for certain models that had issues it seems. Anyone else get this fix done? They state it won't "adversely impact" drivability and fuel economy. Who's going to be the guinea pig on this? This is of course a voluntary flash.

Just got the letter today. I'm one of those who got the falsely illuminated "check engine" light after I had the AEM done. It occurred about 2 months afterwards. VW had to replace the DPF again and a few sensors. Dieselgate must be costing them a fortune and these check engine lights are only adding insulte to injury. They should have done a better job of testing their fix before putting it out. I can only guess that with this newest recall, they are changing the parameters of when the ECU detects a fault.

Once upon a time (possibly fictional story) VW put out an Adblue system that was not so good. In fact, the managers were yelling at the engineers about the warranty costs, since too many were failing under warranty. The VW engineers figured out that they started breaking at XXX numbers of hours of use. Well, the engineers reasoned if we just did a software update and put less hours on them, the adblue systems would make it out of the warranty period. The repair would fall on the owner. The engineers overseer's were very pleased and the proceeded to yell about a different problem.

Considering that VW put out adblue systems that were failing under warranty and then did an software update to delay the error from showing up until after the factory warranty was finished... This very idea brings back flashbacks of previous VW misconduct.

Yeah, more info on this is in the court transcripts.

For search-ability: "Service Action 23AK"

Nothing over on TDI Club either.

Since it is voluntary.... I will wait.

My wife hasn't complained about the car shuddering while warming up but I might have this done next week since the treg is going to have to go back under the knife for the 3rd time to fix the EGR coolant leak...since they keep replacing other parts and ignoring what I send them and then proclaim it fixed. I'm done arguing with these yahoos...have at it, I'm under warranty.

I’ve got a slight miss at slow speed. Seems to come and go. Replaced fuel filter and thought it helped for first few days now back doing it again. Been doing this though off and on since I bought the vehicle last year with just under 40k on it. Now has 85k.

I've experienced the shutter and the MIL on my 2016 Lux. Was at dealer yesterday with copy of letter in hand asking them to do the flash while the vehicle was in for routine service. Surprisingly, they told me they can't download the new software until January 7. Leave it to VW to send thousands of letter for a voluntary recall its dealers aren't ready to perform. Now I'll have to make a special trip back just for the flash.

I had my 2013 TDI Lux in for a service on Jan 2 and they couldn't do the recall, thy didn't know anything about it, didn't want to discuss it or even look at the letter. I have had good service at my dealer in the past. The demeanor of the service writer and the price of the 60k service leave me wanting to go to the VW / Audi private garage where we took my wife's Audi before she sold it. I guess I will have to make at least one more trip to the dealer to get the recall done at some point. I don't mind the little shudder on start up as it reminds me my Treg is actually a diesel.

Ok, so I pulled the trigger and had this reflash performed. The dealer was very busy, so they held my vehicle overnight which I didn't mind.
First impressions picking up a dead cold vehicle from the dealer is that the Transmission still behaves the same way holding gears until it's warmed up. I did however immediately notice that the pedal response is no longer delayed or hesitant, but linear in it's engagement. I've never driven pre-fix, and so I've only had the post fix driving experience. One of my biggest gripes about my TDI has always been pressing the pedal and waiting 1-2 seconds for something to happen wether it be boost build, downshift etc. What they've seen to have done is instead of the lag between drivers wish and any reaction, there's now a small ramp up from the moment you press down on the accelerator to what you want to happen. I havn't driven on it long enough to see how it'll affect my mpg, I'll check that on one week after a full tank. On the highway, it's quite linear when it gets into power, not so boomy and revy. On my daily commute which has me drive up hills the transmission wouldn't downshift where it usually does. Hope this helps out anyone wondering what this new ECM update is about, simply put driveability improvements from the initial recall is what it feels like.

This is very promising. Please follow up after putting some miles on it to confirm the behavior you observed has stuck around. Especially in warmer weather - which is where it seems to be the worst for me.

Hey guys. 2014 TDI R-line 79k miles. I had the 23AK software update done a few days ago. I was skeptical at first considering my service writer did not know what the software is supposed to do. My car was already going to the dealer for a P20E00 code. But I figured that I might as well get the update done. After a few days of driving, I can say that there is less turbo lag when accelerating. Throttle response is smoother too. I have to wait and see if there is a difference in gas mileage.

We had this update done this week. I can't say that I noticed much of a difference. Car drives fine after this "fix". After driving a souless and gutless Tiguan as a loaner while they had it I was just happy to get back into the Treg. This is my wife's daily driver so I probably don't drive it enough to notice any subtle changes.

Interesting.. I haven't gotten the letter yet, can I call the dealer and inquire if I can get it done anyways?

Got my letter yesterday. I’ve never noticed turbo lag, but I have had 2 isolated occasions of shudder that lasted about 2 seconds each time. One thing that I have noticed post V1 fix is an occasional surge when the car is still warming up and I am stopped in traffic. Suddenly, I will get a pulse that tries to overcome my brake pedal and lurch the car forward. This only happens when warming up, but I’m curious if anyone else has noticed this. My Touareg is a 2014 and overall has been great, but I prefer the pre-fix performance.

I can only hope that the V2 flash will be an improvement over V1, and would be ecstatic if my 2014 performed anywhere near as nicely as my wife’s 2011 Touareg did after the V1 flash. The only noticeable difference we observed with her car was a little more audible growl. Please keep the info coming on observations following the new (V2) flash, for those of us who are still waiting to have it done.

I have this happen to my cayenne diesel and before the fix. I also have a lazy torque converter lock up also when cold. Happens when I am brake rolling at slow speeds and does not lock up when going back on the gas immediately. Has about a 2-3 sec lag and then a hard lock up and lurch the car.

I had the yktreg TCU original coding modification performed on my Wifes 13 q7 tdi about a year ago and it cured the shifting problems and many drivability problems after the original Audi fix.

She still had many engine relayed drivability problems such as needing new adblue: injector, metering module, pump and flanges. Other problems included EGR cooler, solenoid, valve and needing carbon cleaning of intake and flappers. All these repairs still did not cure a low temperature, low speed, random engine shutter and bucking. Of course, I found out about the Lemon Law provision of the settlement after the 18 month window expired, otherwise I would have cashed out this car in a heartbeat.

I did not want to lose my yktregs TCU coding, but had to do something to try to cure the engine problems, so we had the Service Action 23Z9 performed. My impressions are that engine lag has decreased and performance has increased. The engine stutter and bucking are gone. ( although it is too early to tell, as any other service or code clearing has made it run good, but the symptoms would return after a week or two). Regarding the TCU and shifting, this most recent service action definitely changed the shifting.

Compared to the yktreg coding, the new service action revs are definitely higher during warmup acceleration, and holds lower gears longer. Some transmission lag has returned when reapplying throttle after coasting, but this is masked by a more responsive engine.
Overall, this new fix really is more refined and I would definitely recommend getting the service action performed. The TCU shifting is much better than the original fix shifting ( but not as good as the original cheat coding or yktregs coding).
