Naviplus Apple Carplay Conversion (and Android Auto)

Did the successful conversion to Apple Carplay yesterday. The kit is from Naviplus in Melbourne.

Instructions were so so... there are cable plugs and components received which are not shown in the instructions, and there's items and connections etc in the instructions which don’t match anything you receive. The Touareg 7P dismantling instructions and photos are not always for the 7P and vice versa. So 3-4 phone calls to have a few thoughts and question answered, and in the end I thought there was a good 10-20% this would work... it worked.

Works perfectly so far. All the stock features are unchanged, only when you press the "Nav" button twice do you get the Apple Carplay screen.

The reason I did this was my MMI unit was just changed out for a new one, as the hard disk reading had failed a couple of times and VW Southport said they would get it fixed under our extended warranty - which they did (whole unit replaced, probably a few bad sectors on the hard disk). During this time I had a loaner Passat Station Wagon and used the Apple Carplay for the first time as we use Waze quite a bit when driving to Brisbane. The instantaneous traffic warnings and alternate suggested routes before you get stuck in traffic I find great. Hence the upgrade (or downgrade it used to be with cheaper model cars).

Recommended, but make sure you have the time to "take your time", as it is somewhat complex - or probably better said as time consuming to make sure you get it all right.

Paul, I've taken the liberty to edit your original post. Have finally managed to get the first 4 images back into your post.
I'm not game enough to remove the "attached images" in case we lose the lot.

Congratulations Paul on a well done job(y).
Looking at your pics seems like a nightmare install, make sure you post an update if any gremlims show up in the future, it seems VW is not up to speed with other marques in this technology, it's evident both the superceded RNS510 and the current RNS850 is not keeping up with the much lower priced offerings available from other manufacturers.
It is something that I would like to have in my 7L but it seems that is not available for my model, installation on the other hand seems to be something beyond my capabilities LOL.

Well done Paul,
Looks great to me. It's very tempting but the price is holding me up at the moment. I can't justify it for my situation at the moment.

Good stuff. Thanks Paul.
I put one in last year. Auto lecky quoted 2 hours and 10 hours later it was finished, so yes, instructions are not particularly clear, but the crew in Melbourne were patient and helpful.
Turning off the navigation means the clock does not auto up-date the time, the altimeter is gone and the direction on the dash is wrong. Great for streaming radio, provided there is 4g coverage !
As to cost, the reason I proceeded was I was told VW would not be supporting the 850 navigation from this year (not sure if that happened) but the cost to upgrade 2 year old software made the Naviplus a no brainer.
Cheers, Greg

Greg, my clock auto updates (doesn't seem to be any issue), the altimeter is still there and functions properly and not sure what you mean by the "direction of the dash is wrong". Everything works absolutely as it was, everything is as normal until you press the "Nav" button for a second time which then activates the Apple Carplay. Unplug the iPhone and the Apple Carplay disconnect and everything returns to normal. Cheers Paul.

I just had the Naviplus installed on my 2017 Treg. Instructions leave a little bit to be desired. I am not into car 'projects' so I sucked it up and paid a local car audio shop to do it. It took them 3 hours. The Naviplus support guys are fantastic. They provided a WhatsApp number and my tech was able to call them and troubleshoot a few things. Pretty sure it was 4 am and they were right there helping out. The thing that screwed up my tech was that a small part didn't make it into the box so he got everything hooked up and the sound wouldn't work. For reasons that are beyond me, you have to have an 'Audi MMI aux' cable plugged into the MMI port in the center console. I ordered that for 8 bucks on Amazon and it works perfectly. (You don't actually plug your phone into this and then you select 'AUX' for input on the media tab -- viola`). I also ordered the wireless feature and that makes this better than my previous CarPlay unit.

If you are used to CarPlay in a different car, the one thing you might notice is that the VW Dynaudio touch screen requires a little more force to swipe and select. I just got my Treg last year and previously had Carplay. I thought I could deal with the downgrade in electronics, but it just sucked. The Naviplus is not cheap, but you will get a genuine CarPlay experience and the only visible change is a small microphone they placed by the rearview mirror. Unless you like taking things apart, get a professional.

Car audio shops have lots of experience but still leaves me cynical.. if they have enough Touareg experience and care to put it all back like how it was.... perhaps its my ocd
Good you have it all done and working well.
Checked out Pauls install and it works a treat

Hi Paul
Did you pick naviplus for a particular reason over the wireless and cheaper option from Joyeauto?

Is there any chance to see the view of the Google Maps? It seems that the GUI was changed over time and now what they show on the Naviplus website and what they actually ship does not match, likely for the better. I am pretty much ready to pull the trigger on buying a unit for 2016 TDI and wanted to know as much as possible in advance about the installation process to avoid opening up the car and having it stand gutted in the garage until I get all the pieces together.

I assume, further, there is no way to test the unit outside of the car harness and hook ups, to avoid ripping everything out only to find out the unit is faulty or does not work.

Last but not least - if I understand correctly, the phone would have to be connected to MMI-to-USB converter that can be found in the center console. Is that a correct statement?

thank you in advance !

1. There is a new user interface recently updated, but I don't think GoogleMaps changed that much? See images attached.
2. I don't believe there is anyway to test unit/s (components) before installation, although they are apparently prechecked.
3. The phone is connected through a USB port which can be mounted anywhere, mine is in the bottom compartment in front of the gear lever. This is plugged into one of the units supplied, not the MMI. The phone must be plugged in to make the CarPlay work... or use the wireless version (although I was warned this has bugs/faults?)

Thanks for the update Paul.
I expected the phone needed to be plugged in via the MMI port in the centre console (in our MY16). I am about to use that interface to bring the video feed in from the back of the caravan. I expected to see myself swapping phone and Reverse feed whenever we pulled up in town/caravan park.
Now I have this problem resolved. THANKYOU.
I'm going to get a Naviplus addition. Thanks for all your work Paul. Outstanding

The phone is plugged into the USB like any other CarPlay head unit, but the MMI still has to have a dummy plug in it. That's what tells the computer to use the AUX input (if that's how the USB is coded), I believe. I haven't installed my system yet, but there is this little dongle and the USB that gets installed is cabled in series with the MMI if I'm not mistaken. I do not think you can use CarPlay through USB and leave the MMI port free. The MMI interface is in the glove compartment on our 2013.

I read somewhere that the Joyeauto solution doesn’t work with the steering wheel controls. Worth checking before ordering.

For the people who installed the Navi plus, do you get turn by turn directions in the front screen behind the steering wheel like with the factory navigation system?

#35 ·
I put an Alpine unit in my T2 car and when the installer rang to order the unit Alpine said there were 4 different fakra cables that connect with the steering wheel and only one would work with the steering wheel controls. The cables were $50 a pop so got only 1 and sure enough no volume control from the steering wheel. Murphy rules. Cheers Tim

Just to clarify Paul,
when using the OEM navigation system of the RNS, turn by turn instructions do or do not appear in the MFD display between tacho and speedo?

I certainly understand that the Apple Carplay/Waze/Googlemaps don't provide the info in that area?

(Sorry to dwell on this point, just seeking full clarification for others as well as my own expectations - cheers)

Steve, if you're using the OEM navigation system, nothing changes. Everything works as it did before... turn by turn directions appear in the MFD display between tacho and speedo, as have before, as they should. Zero changes to any OEM displays or OEM functionality if you're not using Apple Carplay.

The navigation directions are not behind the steering wheel when you are using CarPlay. It is on the touch screen only. I was used to CarPlay so that is more natural for me anyway. Been one month and still working perfectly.

Thanks Bizzle.
Our car has the MMI port in the centre armrest/storage bin. I'll try and review the Joyeauto instructions/manual before committing, but the pros outweigh the cons.

I'm trying to find as much of the kit that I can in pictures to directly compare it to my naviplus, but it doesn't look identical from what I've seen. I don't have the wireless version, but I thought the wireless was an additional module that could be added to mine so the rest of everything should be the same. I don't think mine needs to be spliced into the canbus and I read that this one does but that's just from skimming threads in the past fifteen minutes or so.

I didn't say the USB was a dongle or at least I definitely did not intend to convey that in what I wrote. :)

Earlier methods looked like people just plugged anything into their ports, often a 3.5mm adapter, but the current version comes with a dummy MMI plug (the "dongle" I'm referring to). On mine, and others that I've read, the dongle needs to be plugged into the MMI port in order for the unit to use the aux input.

Just skimming through this thread I wanted to add a little from my experience with the Joyeauto unit. I got it just about 3 weeks ago from the store on aliexpress (I linked below to the exact one) for right around $500 US. The unit arrived in 5 days. The instructions are nearly worthless, however they do have a video showing how to install that is somewhat usble. I was able to do the entire job in right about an hour. The only part I had trouble with was tapping into the can bus and that's just because I was terrified to splice into the wrong wire which there are a lot in the chase under there.

Some things to note that I have not seen mentioned in any of the other threads (I may have missed it if they were).

1. The unit I got has wireless Carplay and as I was surprised to find it also has wireless Android Auto which is what I use.
2. You can not use the factory mic with it, you must wire the kit one in. I have had reports that there is a bad echo with the kit one also.
3. It does retain usage of the SWC, but my back and forward buttons do not interface with the unit. Volume works fine. Also when you press the menu button on the SWC it toggles between the box and the factory screen. Which is annoying because sometimes I want to check my MPG or open the menu and it switches the RNS display as well.
4. I am not able to see my reverse camera display. It switches on and you can see it the the box displays a blank screen. I imagine this is due to a setting or one of the dip switches, but that's what I've got right now.

Overall I am pleased with the unit and I am trying to work with their support to fix the few small issues that I'm having. If any of you that have the unit can offer some advice on the issues im having that would be great
