High Fuel Consumption? 2005 V8

I have a 2005 V8 and believe the touareg is "drinking" a bit much fuel

on the highway i typically drive around 130km/h (80mph) and it uses no less than 16L/100km (14.7mpg). i checked the consumption on several road trips and its constantly the same.

in the city its terrible, i end up using over 25L/100km (9.4mpg).

anyone else getting similar numbers? i was expecting to average 15L/100km not have that be my better number

i serviced the car recently but am not 100% sure with the air filters, they seem clean but i doubt they could be causing too much fuel drain. i am also considering going cat back to free up the system a bit. any comments?

The V8 was rated at 18 mpg on the highway, but those are usually from tests in a wind tunnel. Driving at 80 mph is gonna hurt it too. Drive 55 mph and you will see an increase in fuel efficiency. These are heavy SUV's and eat alot of gas. I don't even look at my fuel consumption usually, because it won't make me change the way I drive or get a different vehicle.

On a side note, there is a post on here about intake manifold linkage arms. If those are frozen or broken, they would affect it some. Do a search for that and check.

Also how many miles? When was the last time it had the spark plugs changed? Coil packs?

i have been looking in to the linkage arms actually and replied in the thread hoping to get somewhere from that. i changed the spark plugs recently and the coil packs seem to be aok.

driving 90km/h on the highway would not really be feasible unless i want to get run down hehe, most people here drive at least 140 or so (limit is 130km/h and police wont do anything until you pass 150km/h).

i read some other posts about mpg and it seems that at 80mph i should be getting at least 16mpg not barely 15 if im lucky, i see people getting 15 in the city :S

I purchased my Treg out of state, leaving me with almost 1100 mile drive back home. During my drive home I managed to get 18.3, but that was only because it mostly flat terrain. Driving around home with a mix of freeway and city driving, I've been getting 15.6 pretty consistently.

2004 v8. 17MPG highway / 10 MPG Town. New air filters, spark plugs, coils, 91 octane, AMSOIL synthetic in diffs, transmission, engine and transfer case. What can I say, it's a beast.

I get 14.5 mpg average for the past year, a mix of local errands and few 500 miles trips on I95. During the last such trip I got about 18mpg while driving around 75/80 mph. The Touareg is a relatively large truck and it is not very aerodynamic, so higher speeds will exponentially hurt your wallet.

Can we close this thread before Nick gets on the pigs again :)

Definitely: intake manifold arms, air filter, MAF, coil packs and plugs, the right oil and a light foot. For the rest... it's a V8

glug :drunk: glug :drunk:....glug.....:drunk:

I was getting similar mileage to what others posted, adn the FSI is a bit more efficient than the non FSI engines.

I have a 2005 V8 and just towed my Lotus from NJ to VIR and back along I-95 doing 75-83mph and averaged 13 mpg. I'm sure if I drove like a normal person and not passing everyone while towing, it would have been around 15 mpg.

When not towing, I'm seeing about 18 mpg city/highway mix.

gonna have to look in to the common issues, my mpg seems too low by a good 2mpg compared to the rest. no way can i get anything near 18mpg and if i average even 10mpg in the city im golden

of course its a pig and i knew that when i bought it but i expected 15l/100km average, not best i could hope for :(

so now air filters and spark plugs are new, oil filters and service was done recently. went on a road trip and barely pulled off 640km (396miles) from the tank (100l).

seem normal?

edit: checked the intake manifold arms and they move back and forth nicely

26.4 gallon tank...Without knowing how much it took to fill it back up after your trip, I will say you are in the ballpark. Consider if the tank took 22 gallons after your 396 miles trip. 396/22=18.

Even if it took 24 gallons, you are still at 16.5.

the numbers i got were from using the full 100l as i had to top off a little before arriving. i drove no faster than 130km/h (80mph) , wasnt towing anything and drove alone.

from what i read on the forums people can get at least 17-18mpg on such trips where as i get 15-16 maybe.

i should check the tires again, i had the winters put on recently which are the stock 18" , didnt see a difference in the summer though with the 20" 275's

i will have a look at the injectors and see how thats going as well.

btw when idling i use about 1.5~1.6L/hour, what do others see?
