As far as the indicator removal goes. I put soft scotch tape on two flathead screwdrivers to protect the cluster surface, placed them 180Âş from each other under the indicator and rotated the screwdriver clockwise around its own axle to carefully pry them off.
I used a fork. Slips right under there and you can pry them up easily.

My biggest problem, though, was getting the speeometer to read correctly. Obviously it just depends on where you point the needle when you push it back onto the guage mechanism's pin. I just popped it on anywhere and then rotated counterclockwise until it stopped. Then continued rotating it - but the needle was just spinning on the pin. I pushed it around to zero and was done.

But I found that it was off by about 4 miles per hour, so I drove with a hand-held GPS unit set to display speed and noted how far off it was. Then when I got home I disassembled the cover again and noted where the needle pointed when spun all the way counterclockwise. Then I gave it a little tweak and reassenbled. Now it's much more accurate.

MDF Fixed!

Just wanted to post a final update for anyone that may still be having problems additional to the bad transformer. I found Tom Bendyk of Speedosolutions.com who performs repairs on these clusters for anyone that would rather take that route. Much cheaper than purchasing a brand new cluster.

Luckily, when I contacted him about the bad capacitor and transistor mentioned in my previous post (found they were bad AFTER already replacing the transformer), he had a new transistor and a used capacitor that he sent me for $20 (including shipping) and I performed the repair on my own. The transistor was a surface mount component and I actually had a difficult time desoldering the old one, but once I changed both parts and put it back in my dash, everything worked again!

I recommend calling Tom or shooting him an email (sales@speedosolutions.com) if you need additional parts or just want to send yours to him so he can fix it.

If anyone needs additional help, let me know.

hi all,

my mfd lcd is crapping up as well (lcd leakage.) i'd like to swap just the lcd.

the treg is 2006 r5 tdi (europe), and it has the old, small, monochromatic (red/amber) lcd.

does anybody know the make end type of that lcd panel, so i can start searching for one online?

(presently the only options i'm seeing are complete instrument clusters on ebay, but i'd like to go a little cheaper...)

thanks in advance!

Add me to the list of people who have performed this repair with success! I spent $24 with shipping, from China mind you, and got the transformer (8-948-411-102 (R2)) a week later.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Transformer...ion-Repair-/140841735059?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item20cad25393&vxp=mtr

Symptoms I had:
When the weather was really cold, I could barely make out the MFD which led me to the conclusion the LCD was good. As soon as the car warmed up or if the weather was nice, the MFD was completely dim. This pointed to the transformer for the MFD backlight being the issue and the repair confirmed this.

I was hesitant for a moment as the replacement transformer is a little larger than the original but it fit just fine and works like a champ. My brother-in-law did all the R&R work and even with his expertise and ability (builds boutique amps, guitar pedals and pickups) said it was a bit of a pain to remove all the solder whilst being extremely careful not to damage or overheat anything on the board.

Total time I spent was about 2 hours as I was really being careful taking everything apart, with another 20 on the soldering job by my brother-in-law.

This is a GREAT THREAD!! :D Good info here. Enough so that I can start on my repair. However, nobody has posted HOW to get the instrument panel circuit board out, I dont think it would be difficult. Is there a how-to somewhere?????

Second, what are the specs on the capacitor that may need to be replaced????? I want to be able to get one and have it on hand in case I need it. So far, my LCD works fine, other than the illumination.

Thanks much!

Tom is great and super fast turn around time. He just repaired my 05 treg cluster. def recommend his service.

Add me to the list of (really) happy people who, with the generous knowledge of contributors to this forum and a brilliant local electronics tech, was able to successfully repair the instrument cluster MFD backlight on my 04 V10 Touareg. Ordered two replacement voltage transformers for $16 each plus $6 shipping from China. Received them in Canada in 18 days then into the hands of a soldering surgeon the same day and presto, the LCD is bright and colorful once again.

The voltage transformers are here: Transformer for Touareg Porsche Bentley Instrument Cluster Illumination Repair | eBay

I probably didn't need to replace both of them but my tech guru decided he might as well while he was at it.

An important step in the process is diagnosing the exact cause of the failed backlight. My tech was able to quickly test the 'winds' of the transformer and confirm one of them was 'open'. He was very confident that the replacement of the transformer would fix the problem and it did.

MFD fixed!

Thanks Tyl3r32 for this excellent procedure and referral to Tom at speedosolutions. Tom was a great help in providing the parts, shipped them fast at a good price and was very willing to provide information based on real world experience. I had someone locally do the soldering of the four components and now have a fully functioning MFD. I now know I purchased a 2004 V6 with 70,000 miles. The crack addict I bought it from didn't lie to me!!!

Needle removal (The Gauge Needles!!!)

Tom at speedo solutions suggested using a fork (an eating fork, a table fork) under the needle. I just used my thumb and forefinger to tightly squeeze the black piece and then pulled up on the needle. You might break the black pieces on the smaller needles but they can be super-glued back on.

Noooooo! Turn the needle all the way clockwise and it should come off easily with a firm tug while twisting further iirc. Don't just pry them off like a ham fisted doof. ;-)

I really appreciate all of your information and I think I have the same problem! Do you have Tom's phone number, I would really like to get in touch with someone and expedite my process and make sure that I get the testing done correctly. Can you post it or message me? Thanks!
