Hate the wood interior! Any ideas for replacement?

Ever since I got my '06 Touareg, I've never liked the wooden interior. When I decided to purchase it, I planned to replace the wood trim with the engine-spin trim (or other non-brown trims) which I saw in the individual brochure.

Obviously, I didn't realize how expensive these trims are! I saw that some people in this forum painted the trim to match the body color or paint it black. I considered this as an option, then I realized that painting the ashtray wouldn't be a good idea, since the paint would eventually get damaged from continuous friction.

I also thought of having custom faux carbon-fiber pieces to cover the trims, but I'm worried that the trim wouldn't cover the steering wheel properly. I don't want there to be any groove in the carbon-fiber layer which I could feel while gripping the steering wheel.

I've seen advertisements for custom carbon-fiber trims in a local magazine, and honestly I'm not sure if it's real (doubt it) or fake. Either way, I figured I'd have that groove issue on the steering wheel, and I am worried that they wouldn't cover the ashtray properly.

What do you guys think? What option(s) do I have? I have the full wood trim which covers the dashboard, doors, center console and the steering wheel.

I'm after a black/silver/carbon-fiber/engine-spin type of finish.

There are no carbon kits for it since there is no demand for kits for the Treg. I would rather have that myself, but not going to happen. You either live with the wood, paint it, or install engine spun. Only real options you have.

Hey guys...

Any steps I should have the paint shop follow when painting the interior parts?

How should the parts be prepared, how many layers of paint, what other layers other than paint should be applied?

Again, are you sure the ashtray cover's paint won't be damaged from all the sliding?

for sure. mine are cracked on my v10. I am going to pull them out and take them to my friend who does custom wood for the office furniture industry. If anyone is interested, I will pass on the info when it is available.

I just installed the Engine Spin Alc interior trim on my V10... looks great (took me a while to get use to it... certainly a different look! I still have the rear doors to swap out.. hoping to finish up this week.

I iwll take a few photos tonight and post them up. I also have the German sales book for the Touareg... it has lots of photos of the various trim options. I sure wish we could get all the seat and trim options here as factory options.

I purchased mine through OEMValue... but i am sure i could have saved a few dollars if i had just walked into a dealership in Germany and ordered them. I am headed there next week, I will stop in a dealership and see if i can get some pricing for everyone.

Things i wish i had on my Touareg that the Germans get as options:
1) full leather package (dash, center console, etc.)
2) Alcantara roof liner (the Q7 we were going to purchase had this.. loved it.
3) Full headed glass
4) Roof mounted rear DVD player.

A few photos of my install of Engine Spin. This trim is available for 2010 in the US with the Lux Plus package. The last photo shows the one door i still have to swap out.

more... Again.. it is a very different look.. a little more sporty.. a little less luxury. The wife hated the wood with the Sienna.. in fact she gave a thumbs up to purcahsing the Touareg but said the wood had to go... i personally didn't think it was all that bad with the wood, but i had no issues keeping the wife happy:). Ironically the Engine Spin trim is made in the USA :)... says so on the back of every piece.. but you have to order from Germany.

Not really comparing the same thing... ordering parts vs. "upgrading" is obviously going to cost more. Ordering 20" wheels after you pick up your car is going to cost a ton more than ordering your car with 20" wheels. What you forget to factor in is that i have a like new full set of Walnut Wood trim i get to sell... so there will be at least a little bit of $$$ back in my pocket.

... but... i really don't understand why we can't pick and choose our options like the rest of the world.. i look at the list of options for Germany and it is amazing... every Touareg is unique... in the US we basically get 3 or 4 packages to choose from. :(

Great link spockcat. Actually, one Club Touareg member sent me a link to a VW vortex post where a guy used this type of film on his Touareg. According to him he couldn't apply it to the wood trim around the cup-holders. What I'm worried about is wrapping the steering wheel. I have wood on the steering wheel as well, and I don't want to feel the edges of the film in the inside of the wheel. I haven't seen a single steering wheel application in the post you linked to.

Here is what the Touareg looked like:
