Does anyone know if you can add a Full-Size Rear Mounted Spare Tire Carrier that is optional on 06 models to an existing touareg? Purchase at the dealer and have them install?

Thanks for any info

Do you have any information about these holes? I'm thinking of fabricating an external spare carrier and was at first just contemplating one that mounts to the tow hitch. But, if the bolt mounts exist on my 04, perhaps a custom rack could be mounted to them without having to replace the rear hatch?

I believe the bolt holes are in place even on the 2004 models BUT it will be very costly as there are many new parts you need, including a new liftgate. I would strongly suggest you give up on the idea.

Are you sure you need a new liftgate? In looking at the unit and the fact that it is a option. I would find it hard to believe that they would require a whole new liftgate. I don't think that would be a cost effective option for a car company to offer. Also you can buy the porsche version for $2000 as an add on.

That's $2,000 as a factory option.

To buy the parts and install as an after sale add-on would be at least twice that.

My guess for the Touareg would be at least $3,000 in parts.

Put on an aftermarket hitch and a hitch mounted spare.
Yep, I have seen a few of these at Colorado Rally - very nice.

As I recall, the VW-integrated factory rear-tire mount only allows you to carry the factory size tires; not oversize that some of us use. The aftermarket hitch-mounted spare allows you to carry the size you want.

well about the over size tires, I had 17" off Road tires on the V6tdi and I have a spare 18" with low profile tires, and the newer V10tdi had standard 19" rims with Low profile tires, and there is no difference in the size of the two tire carriers, but, I must say that we could see that the 19" was a lot wider than on the 17", you could see this when we parked the two cars together.

Not so much the wheel size - but the outer dimension with the tire.

Standard Touareg wheels + tire diameter usually is around 29". Some of us push that diameter out to 31.5-31.8". Is that what you are referencing?

spare

i dont think theres much space around where the spare wheel goes on the back, especially the lower side. maybe just enough space between the lower side and the moulding to slide a finger in.

Are you referring to the bolts - driver side - under the bumper molding ?

Here is an image of the area on a 2006 T1 (like a 2004). The external hatch would mount to these four bolts.

Yeah, those are the bolts I was wondering about. Do you think it would be possible to design and fabricate a custom swinging tire mount that could bolt onto those? Obviously you'd have to drill some holes in the bumper to accommodate the bolts, but with a custom tire arm you would not need to replace the rear hatch.

That's exactly what I plan on doing. I got lucky and got my hands on a brand new rear bumper skin for the spare wheel carrier version and I want to fit this and fabricate my own carrier. But it's a long term project, so it won't happen soon. BTW the prices for the two versions of the skin are basically the same.

I've been carrying my full size spare on the roof. It works fine, but it moves around a bit on heavily corrugated surfaces and does have an impact on my fuel consumption. The car also doesn't fit in my garage with the tyre on the roof. :D

Another thing to consider is if you accidently back into something or someone hits you in the back in say bumper to bumper traffic, you can add $2-3,000 to the repair bill that would originally cost maybe $2,000 without the external mount. If you absolutly need a full size spare, why not put it on the roof?

I ran with the tire on the roof for a good year or two on my 2006. While I still have the Surco rack, I have just not mounted it on my 2009. And why- yeah, vertical clearance. Parking Garages just dont work.

As much as I admire the idea of using those bolts (which I may not have on the T2), I'm thinking the Bonarue is the better external solution. I'm running the tire inside for now.

I would tend to agree, but my problem is I have a goose neck removable towbar which doesn't have the 2" square receiver, so I can't fit the Bonarue.

Yes, fly to Germany and take it yourself to a VW dealer for a full mechanical, electrical and bodywork inspection.

If you don't already know it, you could be buying a total dud that could cost you thousands to fix.

I wouldn't buy ANY Touareg unless I could see it for myself.

Do you have the dealer network to carry out effective repairs on this extremely complex engine?

If not, buy a V6 Tdi locally that you can inspect properly.
