Filling up

DO any of you guys when filling up still fill a little more when the pump stops to get a little more in? Do you think its bad in the diesel ?

What is the point? A fraction of a gallon won't make much if any difference in range and you actually run the risk of damaging the float for your fuel level indicator. Furthermore you can also end up damaging the auto shut-off sensor on the pump, so the next sucker who uses it after you either ends up with diesel all over the side of their vehicle, or has to constantly keep squeezing the trigger because it shuts off every 3 seconds :).

Not just bad with diesel, bad with any type of fuel. Just take it out when it shuts itself off and call it good, no need to try and fill it to the very top.

I've always topped up all my cars, i could vent and add an extra 5 liters on my bug, The nice part about it is you get consistant fills and can more accurately measure fuel economy. I dont' think i've damaged anything in my tank in the last 450,000 km but who knows. It' s a bit harder with the touareg because the nozzle hole is tiny and you really can't see into it very well because of the angle, on the bug it was straight down with a big hole u could really see how far up it's comming. Diesel foams, ALOT so a slow fill will usually allow you to put that little bit extra in. Instead of trying to squeeze extra in, just try slowing down the flow when you think it's getting near full to reduce the foaming.

Hope that helps

You won't damage anything if you brim so do what you want.

A fill to the brim helps if you want to assess your MPG accurately [rather than being one of the folk quoting over-estimated figures from their MFDs] or if you have a long journey ahead of you as the extra gallon you'll squeeze in can be handy.

I even go so far as rocking the car a little to try and get the tank completely filled up. I hate going to the gas station, it is a waste of time, if I can squeeze one less fill in a year, then it is OK with me.

Agree! I hate filling up, I always let it go to the fuel fill up warning, then put as much in as I can - I also like to manually calculate fuel consumption. (The max I have ever put in is 95 liters)

I stuff as much fuel into my vehicles as I can without dumping it all over the side of the car. You're fine.

Diesel does foam quite a bit when filling up, so if you just stop whenever the first release happens then you're not really close to full

Shouldn't matter, but my kid's A4 explicity says not to top off....something about messing up the vapor canister. The touareg owners manual might even say the same thing, but I haven't opened mine in 5 years.

Anyway, I seldom bother topping off...it was an old habit when I used to pay cash, but with a credit card I could care less if the statement is 65.78 or an even 66.00....which whenever I topped off, always seemed to become 66.02...and then 66.11...until the mindlessness stopped or I spilled fuel.

If you think topping off is anal, I've even stopped my occasional practice of blending my own 91 octane by mixing half 89 and half 93...all to save about a buck or two....

We sure have a lot on our minds on this forum, now. I guess it beats the early old days talking about System Fault Workshops and having the main battery cables replaced. ;)

Topping up the tank with a diesel is not going to produce the same outcome as with gasoline as they have different thermal expansion coefficients with temperature as the variable. Meaning the expansion of the fuel in the confined tank volume in Siberia is a whole lot less than Baghdad for the same volume But, my general understanding of gas tank refills is to stop the pump when it clicks off then holster the pump nozzle. And as I tell my kids, DON'T let the tank drop below 3/4 empty. On a cycle, I refill about 1/2 empty, unless I do a distance trip and that would mean on the highway, refill at 900klms with reserve.

I also try and put as much fuel in my vehicles as possible. May only be a half gallon, but, that half gallon in my CC can get me home from work one more time before having to fill up again. :D
