My 2010 v6 diesel will run between 70 to 90 degrees on the flat and up a hill, but as soon as she points her head down hill the temp goes down and depending on the length of the decent it can go right down to 50. the oil temp goes down with it. I have replaced the thermostat with a original vw thermostat but no difference. I have only owned the car for a few weeks so am very new to their characteristics and habits, any help greatly appreciated.

Yea that wont be the issue !
Where are you at

what is the ambient outside temp when this happens ?

On the up side better than having the reverse happen !!!

There are 2 thermostats, one on the EGR (or in the oil filter case for some models) and one in the front, near the water pump. You need to change'em both.
I changed them and they were both stuck open.

we are in the snowy area at Tumut and today I think the outside temp was about 19 degrees, where on the v6 diesel is this egr thermostat? to change the egr thermostat is it a diy job or do I have to go rob a bank?

Depends on model year, mine is a 2011 CASA engine and one of thermostats was near EGR. Other engine types have it in the case of the oil filter and you need to change all that. Any mechanic can do it.

This could be part of it Tumut is not exactly Sydney in summer or winter or Brisbane either.

Although 19c is still pretty warm.

Was driving along in Syd last week outside day temp around 13 - 15. Doing 80kms.... hit a 3km section where no effort was involved and noticed my temp go from the standard 90c to around 70-80c.... had never seen this before with either of my tregs

The minute i needed to climb "gracefully" (1500rpm) at 80kms/ph up from the Woronora bridge ever so effortlessly the temp rose instantly.

Given where you are i would be focused on your ambient temp for a while. Also the speed at which you are travelling.

How fast are you going when you monitor this ? 50kms / 80kms / 100kms ???? etc

Drag may have more to offer .........this is just my dumb ass observation

The water temp gauge lies. Seems that idiots complained -across all brands- that they could see the temperature gauge move in normal operation, which is what the heck actually happens in real life. Now you get a "averaged" and "delayed" readout. That is why the readout stays so rock sold in "normal operation"

So, I guess I should accept this as the new normal, but I still do not like it. I want the real live actual numbers. If all I wanted what is just a low-normal-high display, then that function is covered by an idiot light.

If you connect to the obd port and watch the live readouts, you will find the temperature swings are bigger than what the gauge reports.

On the plus side, at least it does tell you if you are under heating or over heating.

Hit the nail on the head EGR thermostat

I agree with Nicky I want real readings. use to like to monitor when my thermostat for example would open I could see the needle drop at a certain rate in time before climbing again.

Also good for monitoring when the engine is being pushed

Problem fixed, thank you Drag and Adidas, after physically closing off the EGR water supply line with a pair of vice grips and going for a test run, the temp went straight up to 90 and stayed there up hill down hill and every in between,so it was a conclusion that there was a thermostat in the line somewhere, so i contacted Vw only to be told there was no egr themostat for my vin number. but after submitting Adidas's part no 059121113n up it came, it is called a egr coolant regulator I have not yet fitted it yet but am waiting for it to come from Sydney, I feel very confident my cold engine worrys are over . Thanks again.

Adidas Neighbour ... At how many Kms were you when you noticed both open ?

My personal experience at 136k or so my 09 CASA egr thermostat stuck open with the same temperature symptoms. Would warm up to no more than 85 C before it was replaced....after which
it dutifully went back to 12 o’clock where I was accustomed to seeing it

Awesomely wholesome info thankyou BRW

Great info here! Just yesterday I was looking on ebay and saw EGR valves with what looked like coolant hose fittings and couldn't figure out what I was looking at! And I've been wondering how engine designers are making these thermostats so the temp stays EXACTLY the same temp all the time. I only bought my 2009 3L V6 TDI 2 months ago and it's been well-maintained so nothing is wrong with it. So far.. LOL.

I have a similar problem but mine seems to be in the opposite direction. I run my 2015 V6 TDI today at a high speed and a few minutes later, I noticed the temperature guage on 120C.
I have not seen any warning on the dash apart from the yellow check engine light.
At this point I'm feeling very nervous not knowing what to do.
Please help!
