disel engine swap???

just an idea:

get the diesel engine, fuel lines etc. from europe, ship it to canada and put it in my Treg.

I love my V6 and I am not ready to give it up for $10G(may be even less by 2009) as a trade in for 09 TDI. Engine swap seems to be a good alternative.

Did anybody actually tried to replace gasoline engine with disel one??

Any help is much appriciated!!!

I know of no one that has, and I'll put money on you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that has. The short list of things to change out:

Complete engine, turbo(s), mounts, injectors, manifolds, sensors, and harness
Transmission
Exhaust system (including expensive catalytic converters and particulate filters)
ECU/PCM/Harnesses
Instrument cluster
Fuel tanks/pumps/lines

And in the end, after you spend an obscene amount of money, get all the electronics to talk, and get the thing to run, you'll have a vehicle that may not be ever sellable, and may possibly not be street-legal at all.

Not to be a party pooper, but I think the hit you'll take on trade is way less than the fiscal commitment you'd be making to putting a diesel in your current Touareg. Plus, it comes with a warranty, dealer support, resale potential, and a whole lot less headache potential.

Email these guys and ask them to keep an eye out for one thats been crashed:

http://www.tau-sales.com

A slight bend in Japan equals a write off.

Also, your diff ratios might be different, and the gearbox the same... Add that to the list.

Never seen a Touareg done, but we see RangeRovers done here often.

If you got a whole car to swap from, it would just be hugely complex - not impossible.

Post some pictures if you do it ;-)

That actually may not work out so much, a good friend (German) is one of the group heads in VW-Audi Japan, he told me very very few diesels passenger cars in Japan, so little so that VW Japan imports nor builds or sells any diesels at all.

One thing that has occurred in Australia is conversion of petrol cars to run on GAS (LPT).Gas is a lot cheaper, 50 to 60% per litre, however the calorific value is lower so you go less distance on a litre of Gas to petrol. We even had the Govt. giving subsidies ? Can you do this type of conversion elsewhere ? Gas is available all round Australia now , you retain the petrol tank, just add a Gas tank, so you have two sources of fuel, mind you I don't know where you'd fit a Gas tank on a treg.

In my youth I did a number of VW engine swaps...jamming VR6s and 16V into Rabbits and mk2 Golfs was plenty complex and they all ran on gas...trying to do a engine swap + fuel system swap on something as complex as a Touareg, will likely cost you much more money that simply selling yours and buying one that comes that way from the factory...I'd wait the next 6 months until they show up here..

Just to add to the list--I know the OP is no longer planning on a swap:

Springs -- diesel is much heavier
Transmission, driveshaft, diff -- probably heavier duty to deal with the TDI's much higher torque output

As others have said, swaps rarely make financial sense, both because they're expensive and their impact on resale value.

Koellnick

Here is a shop that seems to gut the Tregs out..... In fact, I already bought parts from 'em....
What I am saying is that this guy may know how to answer the question, given that they take Tregs apart every day....

eBay Shop - KFZ-Teile-Koellnick: Wir verkaufen Kategorie 1.

Of course, a little bit of German helps, too. I may be able to help, if needed. :)

I asked my service advisor how much a new V10 replacement would cost (just out of curiosity) during small-talk/chit chatting, as I've constantly had little problems with my V10 TDI. He showed me the retail cost replacement for just the engine (intake, turbos, injectors) is over $27,000CAD. I know your no longer wanting to swap, but just an interesting FYI.

Wow!!! 27K just for the engine thats insane. If I had a diesel I'd just look around for a totaled one so I can have a spare. No way would I spend that much money on just an engine. To my knowledge diesels last forever as long as they recieve proper scheduled maintenance.

No Doubt! Makes me worry about "what-if's"!!! But mind you, back in '04, the V10 TDI option (packaged along with all the other available options), it was a $30,000 upgrade in Canada. In the US and other markets, it was probably less steep, at $22,000! LOL. That's why buying used is the only way I roll. It's just too much of a depreciation hit buying new.

Is your goal better fuel economy or increased performance? Sounds like fuel economy if so then, What if you start out with a Touareg diesel, then simply do a diesel-to-diesel swap? Find a wrecked US registered V10 TDI (like this):

Volkswagen Touareg Salvage Cars

Next re-power with a European front clip from a 2.5 or V6 Touareg TDI. A cheaper alternative would be to augment your Touareg drivetrain with an EMIS unit from Netgain. Salida Conversions (Welcome to Salida Conversions - Converting Vehicles to Electric Assist Hybrids.) installed an EMIS unit in a Chevy Tahoe and took the MPGs from 11 to 18 (64% improvement). If the same improvement ratio holds up for the Touareg, you could be hitting between 25 to 32 mpg for a $7K conversion. The base price of the 2009 TDI starts around $43K.

What was the purpose to swap? Power or gas savings?

I wish I had the know how for an engine swap, I'd swap my passat w8 for an electric just for giggles.
