Hi Touareg owners :) what do you think is best choice for V8 petrol engine
MOBIL1 0w-40 VS CASTROL SLX 5w-30 or CASTROL SYNTEC 5w-40 ????

#3 ·
anyone ????? please share your opinion about which oil you are using :)
i am not a V8 owner but all you will get is an opinion (i think thats all you want)
Oils nowdays are mostly highly engineered fluids, and even more so the reputable brands you mentioned. To make a claim one is better than the other is a huge call and unlikely to be able to be backed with clear evidence.
Just to throw a curve ball, you live in the USA ?? what about Amsoil 5w-40 euro blend ? i have read nothing but good comments about Amsoil products.

regards
Drag

Oil and, specifically, "which is better" tend to turn into arguments and you don't as a rule end up getting anything definitive.

My advice would be to use something with the VW 505.00 approval and you should be fine. There's a list of conforming oils somewhere on here if you search. Any conforming oil will do a fine job for you. If I recall correctly, VW 505.00 does require synthetic, though I think group III and group IV synthetics can qualify.

It is my personal preference to use a group IV whenever possible. Many would argue that its overkill when you do no stretch out change intervals. And they could very possibly be right. But, I do not mind spending a little more on oil even if it is only "feel good" insurance.

One last thing - check out bobistheoilguy.com for as much as you would ever want to know about lubricants.

I use the Amsoil and it seems to be good.

Castrol and Mobil are reputable makes.

Use the grade specified in the handbook for your engine.

And always use a VW OEM filter.

I have been a Mobil1 user for years and am very concerned with durability, shear rate, etc. I run my Porsches at the track and my Audi is a high revving V8 so I want really good protection under pretty extreme situations. I stuck with Mobil1 because Porsche recommends it, even the independent techs I deal with do too. So I figure they wouldn't steer me wrong. Also, at an American Lemans Series race a couple years ago we had a pit pass and both the factory Audi R team and Lizard Racing Porsche used Mobil1 right out of the plastic bottle that you and I get at WalMart! That makes me pretty confident.

Are some other oils just as good? Sure, most likely. But I am confident in Mobil1 so that's what I use. I'll put it in the T3 when I need it.

I agree with Sam in post above.

I guess if I was to simply answer your question, keeping it simple with no discussion at all, without my need to back this answer up with with 1 full hours worth of PDF file reading links, I would have to say.........Mobil 1 0W40

Mobil 1 0w-40 is VW 505.00 rated, and it is a group IV synthetic, it has to be, to get that type of spread/range in oil grade. I've run it in my ALH motor based VW jetta TDI diesel, run it 15,000 miles between oil changes with maybe 1/2 qt of makeup oil, and my wear metal for iron was 51ppm, which works out to about 3.5 ppm per 1000 miles driven, extremely low wear rates in a very high compression 21:1 motor.

It's very, very good synthetic group IV PAO based motor oil. I'd use it without hesitation.

I disagree, Mobil 1 is NOT a group IV oil, not in US, not anymore. In fact it is a hydrocracked group III oil. There are almost no true group IV oils in US besides Amsoil and Redline.

I am currently testing Motul 8100 x-cess and I like what I see so far. I'll be sending a sample to Blackstone at 5000 mark to see how it did. I will then try Amsoil to compare the two. So far from what I hear from S4 guys (same 3.0T engine as mine) they all loving it and the numbers are there to prove it. Said all that Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec are not bad oils and both should work for your V8 with no problems but they perform mediocre in a VAG turbocharged engines. I have several lab analysis from my 2.0T Tiguan and results speak for themselves, I would NOT keep either one in my engine for longer than 5K miles.

Castrol "green" was as good as the mobil 1 mentioned, I'd run either in the car mentioned, just not in a pumpe dusse TDI based "jerk pump" motor.

Syntec 5w-40. It's what the dealer uses. I've changed it myself, but honestly the oil filter on the FSI V6 is such a PITA that I'll pay the extra $20 for someone to do it. Then it's their problem. I always check to make sure they didn't overfill it though.....

Do you also check to see if they are changing the filter?! I mark my filter since I do the oil change every other time

T-Reguan, I don't think Niner was implying that all M1 oils are Group IV oils. He was specifically mentioning the M1 0w40 as being the sole Group IV oil in its entire product line, or that's how I understood it. Unless the M1 0w-40 formulation has now changed? I haven't involved myself in any current oil discussion on oil forums last couple of years so....

I think it's fairly common knowledge(or I would like to think anyways ?)that Mobil 1 went downhill ever since its court battle loss to Castrol and its Syntec, synthetic or not argument years ago.

Folks have gotten wise to Mobil's marketing gimmicks. Although I can say that for my experience, I would use a bit of Rotella T-6 5w-40 in my Jetta between oil changes, perhaps 3/4 of a quart in 10 to 12,000 miles before doing an oil change, whereas Mobil 1 TDT 5w-40, I had a hard time measuring any oil consumption in 15,000 miles between oil changes. The stuff was less volatile or had less to none boil off or gassify as usage compared to the Rotella T6. Whether is based on blended group III and group IV, or how it was made /produced, I do not know, but it generated amazing wear numbers in my motor when having the oil tested by Blackstone.

RE what T-Reguan wrote concerning some Motul products, and even the M1 0w-40 in question here, perhaps we shouldn't be so stuck on what Group the oil is in, since blending of the base stocks and all other additives is what is important, and therefore a well blended oil will be optimum for a given application that it was intended for.

For example, I have many times in the past(not here though) stated the attributes of Esters and PAO's, and really knocked hydrocracked Group 3 oils, but yet, the Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 that I'm now using in the Touareg, is purportedly a Group 3-4 and with a dash of Ester, Group 5 oil!

Ok, I will call Motul up tomorrow and ask, lets put all this down on the table once and for all. But I ain't calling Mobil......too corporate for me ;), so someone else go ahead and report back.

I find this thread amusing, Who has had a good talk with his or her engine lately? You find out which oil is better when one fails, and then it's too late. Maybe the thread should be who's engine failed on which oil. If you use a recommended oil I would venture they all do their job. Sorry, but I find it hard to worry too much about it. JP

#40 ·
Actuuuuuaaaaly, it's not so much about "engine failure", as opposed to specific parts not living up as long as they should have. There are a few V10 and R5 owners on here reporting excessive cam shaft lobe wear before they even hit the 200000km mark on OEM Castrol Syntec stuff. There are also some gasser guys that are reporting higher than normal oil consumption, although VW claim the latter to be "normal."

One then wonders, "what if" I had used something else from the get go instead? Particularly for the TDI guys.

Disclaimer - I am not an Amsoil dealer but I do buy from them sometimes and I recently received an email stating that they now have three varieties of their European Car oil formula.

Full SAPS
Mid SAPS
Low SAPS

Apparently the mid and low SAPS are supposed to be better formulated for diesel engines.

Go on with your discussion now, as I enjoy reading the opinions and learning more about this stuff.
