Billy Goat Bluff and dealers question

G'day
Well, there I was cruising up Billy Goat Bluff Track last Monday arvo, when the R50 failed to proceed. Motor goes fine. revs but no movement backward or forward. Front right wheel seems locked, other three roll OK. Faint sound of metal clicks sometimes.
If it was a Toyota, I'd guess CV joint. But in this case I haven't a clue, so feel free to offer suggestions...
Could be CV (does Touareg have such a thing?), axle, diff, transfer case?
Now, the vehicle was removed from the hill on Friday arvo and is at Heyfield, Victoria. One thing I might have to decide is where it goes for repair. So, any Victorians care to offer suggestions as to good and bad dealers in the vicinity? VW Bairnsdale is nice and close...
Yes, there is a longer version of the story and events of the week; I'll fill you in later...
Regards
Kevin

I'm guessing by now the said and sad R50 is now under/soon to be under shelter in a workshop? Transfer case? You'd have to get all 4 wheels up off the ground to sort it out if it's a mechanical fail. If it was CV it would have given signs of wear earlier and noisy when turning. Best bet is your closest VW dealer and cross your fingers they locate the fail. Is your hip pocket nerve feeling twitchy?

Any of this help?

Hi Kev, my 2 bob's worth. If only 1 wheel seems locked and that it's just in neutral and brakes off including hill control it would probably be a seized wheel bearing or the traction control playing up and putting the brake on that wheel. If the wheel can be moved a little then not the brake. If in gear you say it goes nowhere but wheels can roll??? Do you mean there is no drive to anything? If so, gearbox/transfer case most likely area. What happened immediately before the issue? Were you moving, hi or lo range, etc? John

G'day
In order:
It's at RACV Heyfield at the moment.
CV not noisy so not worn, but that doesn't mean it can't or won't break.
Yes, my hip pocket feels nervous :)
In gear any gear it does not drive. Just one wheel jammed solid.
Was in low range; no warning beforehand, just stopped driving. I thought "just need to pick another line", but not possible to go...
Won't let me change from low to high either.
Anybody know anything about Bairnsdale VW?
Regards

If it was CV joint there would be some movement since it would be worn or broken. Maybe not a full turn but something. Odd that 3 wheels won't push the car with 4th wheel locked. Indicates no drive going to any. Can you see the drive shafts loading up? Take the wheel off the locked axle and see if brake locked on. Electronics may have put gearbox into angle's gear , neither low or high range. Where is the faint metal ticking sound coming from and what is it related to? John

Hi Kevin,
Great to hear you are offroading an R50 mate. It would be quite a sight moving mountains in the high country.
It does sound brake related.
As a random idea, is there are stick jammed on a brake line up under the wheel arch?
I have had issues on range rovers jambing lines before.
Good luck & keep us informed.
cheers
matt

G'day Kevin, all the best mate. Dont let this put you back...this could happen to anyone in any vehicle.
Let us know the outcome

G'day and bump,
I haven't forgotten; neither do I have the R50 back; after reassembly it still had a (maybe electrical/ECU, maybe something else) fault, so it is still at the workshop...I'll keep you posted...

G'day
I have it back now; here's what we found....transfer case looked like it had a bamix stuck into it, pieces of shiny metal everywhere, only 600mL of oil.
What we think: catastrophic bearing failure.
What we think caused it? Maybe possibly it just was one of those things; already failing but the stress up Billy Goat Bluff tipped it over. Or maybe it was a very steep hill and all the oil stayed at the back of the transfer case and starved the bearings because it was 250mL short of oil.
What was done? Replacement transfer case and stepper motor that selects gears, auto transmission service. Diff oil levels checked. A few bits and bobs.
What is different now? We have Elf oil in the tranny but still have VW oil in the transfer case and diffs. We have more oil than recommended in the transfer case. The gearbox has never been smoother, by the way. I'd recommend that change...
What will change in the future? Well, the services will not be carried out at dealers as before. We will continue to use the R50 off-road as before.

Good to know that its been resolved Kev..
I had my transfer case n stepper replaced a while ago, it fixed the slight grinding i was getting and post the change its been all smooth on and off road.
I recommend transmission oil, filter change as well. Should be standard every 90k...

Well, maybe not so simple to explain away lost lubricant. If it was supposed to be 'X'ml capacity oil, then unless it leaked or was not correctly filled by prior service actions, it should still be 'x'ml in the Tx-case. Transfer case and diff oil changes should be scheduled maint items. They're both built tough to survive in normal operating and service conditions. I'd be checking with VW to ascertain when they are (supposedly) due. I'd be gobsmacked if they were not calendar periodic or mileage scheduled.

Thought I read a post on here about VW now including ATF on the service schedule (at 60k intervals), google Benz ATF, they used to have lifetime fill as well, then change it to 60k when they started having issues. FWIW, the guy that fixed my transmission recommends 60k as well, oil is cheap trannies aren't.
