Hi!

I was watching a video on Youtube were a guy was showing the difference between the various suspension modes one the Touareg.

When he set the suspension to "Sport" the car lowered quite a bit and looked, well, more "sporty" :)

Seeing as i only have 17" shoes on my Touareg i thought to myself that this would be a great way to make the car look a bit more streamlined as the gap between the tyres and car is quite big.

So my question is, is it ok for me to change to "Sport" and keep the car in that mode? (i have had the "Auto" setting on since i got the car)

I have had problems with the air suspension before but have had the fixed but have become a bit scared to mess with it.

Leaving it in sport mode wont hurt it, but your ride comfort could suffer over bumps /potholes if you have any Iceland

it.
Whether you are running 17/18/19/20/21 inch VW OEM wheels, if you are using VW recommended tire sizes the overal diameter of your wheel/tire combo will be 29 inches +/- a fraction so the wheelarch gap above the tire will always be much the same regardless.

Stop & go or passengers in the car - Full time Comfort or Auto

Anytime not stop & go - Sport

My family members that use the Touareg universally use Auto.

Sport is fun sometimes, but it becomes unbearable for me after a while. Too bumpy.

I LOVE Comfort. :)
The guys running 17 inch mags shouldn't really feel that much of a dramatic difference when switching from comfort setting to sport mode.

Those with 20+ sizes will have their fillings shake a bit in sport mode and the roughest of roads.

To the OP, don't be afraid to use it. A day does not go by that I don't switch on the fly, from highway sport mode, to comfort mode to adapt to the pothole laden back streets up where I live.

I just don't feel it. Everyone on the forum talks about how terrible the ride is on 20"+ wheels... Maybe because I've never driven my Touareg with the stock 17 or 19" wheels, but I've got 22's with 35% aspect ration tires & sure, it's stiffer in Sport, (as it should be) but certainly not unbearable. In fact, I think it rides downright comfortably all the time.

I keep it Auto for regular driving, Sport (both suspention & trans.) when I need to be somewhere, LOL, and Comfort when going on a longer road trip. I nearly always make the switch while rolling, because doing it at a stop with the brakes on causes some binding as the suspension geometry changes with ride height.

I'm on 17's and there is a significant difference. I agree the difference will become greater as the wheel size increases but the difference is not absent on 17's.

I'm not a big fan of the sport mode on my V10 and other V10s I test-drove before buying mine. I'm not sure about the OP's specific model though. In my case, it seems as if the rebound on the shocks in the rear is too violent. Now, I would've been okay if the fronts were also like that, but it seems the weight of the V10 keeps it from being too violent. I only switch between Auto and comfort for the most part. I use Sport mode maybe once every 2 months or so.

Auto for the Highway(I'm paranoid of flipping over in any SUV 8-[)
Sport again for the highway (I'm paranoid of flipping over in any SUV 8-[)
Comfort for winter/spring cruisin' on the cities lovely potholes

BTW, worth reiterating that AUTO mode is also medium stiffness setting per the owners manual.

Does 'auto' do anything else besides go to medium damping? I assumed it 'automatically' adjusted the damping to the road conditions ie goes soft on a nice smooth road. Also believed it had a bit of a reactive suspension feature ie stiffens up the RH side on a left hand turn. Also does this in 'sport' mode. To be honest I can't really tell the difference between sport and comfort.

If you can't tell the difference between sport and comfort, either something is wrong or you're on 10" wheels with 20" tires.

To me, it's night and day. I love each setting, but they serve their respective purposes. Sport/Auto when I'm alone or with a passenger; Comfort when the Touareg is loaded with people.

I think the difference is quite apparent. Anyone else disagree?

Anytime I've done it I was too focused on driving and any potential "issues" in my surroundings to notice when it went down that final notch :evil_laugh:

What, 180 km/h? Me? No, never.

Twelve years ago I had some good legal fun averaging 193km/h for an HOUR at the Big Bend Open event. We were in the 120mph class and averaged 120.004 (120.004 mile/hour (mph) = 193.127 717 37 kilometer/hour) over 118 miles. We wound up winning the 120 class and got closest to time overall.

Results for car #166. :) Haven't run her any since 2002. Still have her. She's waiting on a timing chain, clutch and 2nd gear baulk ring. :) Here's

I was going to enter BBORR for this year (next week!) and run the V10 in the 110 class, but due to incoming baby it just wasn't doable this year. Cool to see someone here that is a BBORR alum and congrats on winning your class! Have a good friend and Touareg buddy running in the GT class (not sure what speed) with his 911 GT3. They are looking forward to it.

That's awesome! Never thought about entering the Touareg instead of the Corrado. That'd be fun! Really do hope I can run BBORR again some time. That whole experience was one of the highlights of my entire life. Before 2001 someone had died as a result of the race every year before that. I still remember my heart pounding on the start line. Crazy big piles of fun!

I made a pretty big career shift after 9/11. Stopped chasing the money and concentrated on family so something like running the Big Bend is a much larger percentage of income now. It's still within reach though. One day! :)

Congrats on the new kiddo. Lots of kids born after parents evac for fires! lol :) Ours was born 18 March. First camping trip scheduled for first weekend in June. :) You guys are welcome to join if you're into camping. We'll be at Mueller SP.
