295-40-20, Who Else Has Tried This Fitment?

VW recommended 275-40-20 on 20X9 rims. Being a fat rubber type of guy(love the look from the rear when followed), I was thinking of going to a 295-40-20 size. A difference of 2.2%, diameter 728mm vs 744mm respectively, and a speedo error of 70mph vs 71.54. All negligible.

The only catch by moving to the 295mm tire size, is that these 20in mags that I was eyeing, and getting prepared to buy literally today, come only in 9 inch widths. It seems that 285-40-20 would mean a MINIMUM of 9.5 inch width, and the 295-40-20 that I was hoping for would mean a MINIMUM rim width of 10 inches! So that truly limits my search for a good looking 20 inch mag. Back to the drawing board

Does that all sound right? Do those online calculators specs that I posted up above sound right? In any case, who else here is running "fatter" tires on his/her Touareg?

Yup. Those 295/40/20 in all those pictures are looking tastier all the time! Nice look, and very SUV'ish. Me like.

Something that is now confusing me though. Those mags in your link are OEM VW mags called Ayers Rock; size: 9jX20 ET60; Part# 7L6601149AZ31

From what I have read from the recommendations of various members on here, it has been suggested to never go over 275mm width on a 9X20. 295/40/20, it is recommended to go with at least a 10inch wide mag(from what I have read on here). Now is this rule embedded in stone, or is it one of those made to break slightly? The pictures in that link suggest to break, unless I'm missing something here?
Can someone please clear this up?

you're right about the 295 needing a 10" wide wheel
but besides that, what is the proper offset for the 10" wide wheel without rubbing on the T2?
In the US, the 275/40 on the 20" wheels that come from the factory does look like its alittle low on the sidewall dept.

When I bought my tires (Yokohama Parada spec X) the sales brochure showed the recommended rim widths for a given tire. the 275/45/20 would fit on anywhere from a 9-10" wheel.

I'd suggest contacting the tire maker to understand what rim size is required for their tire..

nickm, you are right about the 'allowable' sizes of tires to fit on a particular rim size. If one was to search the model of the tire they want and look at the specs listed on the websites, there typically is a range of rim withs that is allowed for any given tire size. Then there is also a 'measured' width that the tire manufacturer used to measure the tire's dimentional specs. Typically i would assume that that is the optimum width for that given size tire.

Thanks for providing the offset for a 10" wheel on your car nick.

Sorry to hijack, but let me know when you decide to sell your rims!
