Hi, I'm new to the forum and just picked up a 2004 v6 touareg on the weekend. I do most maintenance myself and was wondering what's the best option to source spares ?
1. Ebay
2. Spare parts online stores in UK or USA?
I don't want to be paying $80 shipping for a few filters and a drive belt.
Cheers,
Ben.

Congrats.

Like anything else parts are expensive here. Ebay and online from us, uk, etc is a good option.
Buy as much u want in one purchase or fly there for a holiday and still save $$
:)

I have purchased heaps of parts from the USA and have had nothing but good experiences and saved heaps.
Yes you do need to pay freight but just plan to buy as many spares as you can in one purchase but keep it under $1000 incl fright and pay no import tax.
I just got 2 lower control arms (Meyle brand) from the USA and paid $650 delivered to my door. VW wanted $550 for one arm.

Thanks drag. Can I ask what your preferred online store is for touareg filters, belts, etc. ?
Cheers.
I have dealt with a few companies and for service spares a company by the name of BMA Auto parts in Glendale in LA are good.
I did test and you could get 3 oil filters 6 air filters and a set a 6 spark plugs delivered to you for about $225 total. Freight was about $85 in that $225 so not bad deal compared to our Australian parts in general.
If you want genuine spares there are dealers who are very good to deal with some including a company by the name of Jim Ellis VW. There is one other who is cheaper but I am not home at the moment so I cannot remember the name but they are good also.

Any questions just ask
By the way were are you in Australia ?

Some random thoughts on the subject. Just from my chasing up bits here, in the U.S. and in the U.K., not all things are worth chasing up from os as the freight and maybe tax components make the total near to or more than a well sourced local one. Freight charges vary radically as well. I've had a number of quotes for freight from the US that are 2 to 3 times more than the same items from UK. It does take a lot of time chasing all this up and sometimes all that time 'wasted' can make it better to pay more and get it almost now and with easier comeback if it's wrong/defective. John

I get a OS price and confront my local dealer parts guy, he usually matches or comes close, not always but a lot of the time I get up to 40% off !!

Sorry but I am of the option that we should be getting their best price first up.
If they are in a position to drop the price by 40% that concern's me about their ethics, to coin a phrase ( a sucker born every minute to the uninformed).

Only their best price to their best customers. Actually whilst you may think they should always offer best , I always ask for discount no matter where I buy. Don't think I have ever paid retail at Harvey Normal's . All resellers have a margin they would like, some will go lower if asked , especially if you'll can show you can buy elsewhere, it's called keeping the customer satisfied.

I just bought a centre and rear diff stepper motor from US eBay cheap as delivered to my door . I buy trans service kits from the states also sensors /plugs/belts etc from the UK . The prices I pay smash anything local around here.

Hi.thanks for letting me know. I have looked at bma parts in California and also spoke to them over the phone. They even sent me the instructions for the centre bearing support replacement so I can see if I want to tackle it or just buy a new complete shaft for $510 + shipping. A local driveshaft place quoted me $650 to fix the shaft and I still have to R&R.
