I'm not sure but I would guess April at the earliest based on how I read it.

I've been in a pretty mellow "Whatever" mindset through most of this saga. Initially I wanted to believe the 3.0L would get a clean bill of health. Then I thought well ok a software update and a little more AdBlue use, I can live with that.

But now I suddenly realize I own an orphaned vehicle. It's really bugging me. It's not rational but that's what I'm thinking now.

Effing hell.
Perhaps thinking of it as a vehicle that is sold almost everywhere else but here (US) might help.

I kinda know how you feel as a drive an FSI V8 with a VW badge on it...they only sold those in the US for two and a half years.

The V8 FSI however, was sold abroad for a longer period and some form of it is still (I think??) sold in Audi (Q7?). So it comforts me that there are some out there someplace.

Maybe this makes sense maybe it doesn't... I would rock your 16' TDI Treg as long as you want...maybe get they guys "DESLGT" or whatever license plate after he can't renew his now not-at-all street legal car. >:)

Great time for problems to pop up

Just paid $950 a couple of weeks ago to replace a glow plug and AdBlue valve on my '10 Treg (and waiting to see if VWoA will reimburse for the valve, although I'm not optimistic). Now just dropped her off at the dealer again with CEL, and they tell me they have another glow plug code and unspecified AdBlue code but don't know what to do until VW tech support opens up on Tuesday. Will they do the buyback on a car that isn't running? Because I'm skeptical that VW is going to pay for any of this unless it's specifically a heater failure, and I'm tempted to just get a new car and let this one sit until the buyback, whether it starts then or not.

I have a really tough time with the waiting game, as others I have been contemplating a replacement since buyback discussions began. We had owned a jaguar s type 4.o for nearly 10 years when I decided it was time for a replacement. We had always been very happy with the jegs.com in ever aspect but fuel economy. In replacing the car I wanted to get something beyond comparison so that we could feel we made forward movement instead of just a refresh. We bought a 2011 jetta wagon with factory body kit, lowered it slightly, wheels tires, etc. I quickly realized that we were not going to be happy with the car as it was noisy, bouncy, and missing many comforts we were accustomed to. We looked at passats in 2012 and just didn't see enough difference between it and the jetta, so the salesman suggested we test drive a touareg tdi. In 2 blocks we already were extatic with the car, quiet, sold on the road, and all the features we were missing. Then I saw the price tag, that was a tough pill to swallow. After a couple weeks of looking for compatible options and used options I went back and negotiated a Trade and have never regretted it. Now I find myself back in the position of needing to replace a car that we still like and enjoy. Now to my point; I went to our local vw dealer who had a used audi a7 advertised in an effort to develop a short list of potential replacements. They couldn't locate the car and immediately began throwing out alternatives. I explained my position and that it would most likely be March or so before I was in a position to buy a replacement. He asked if I have met with the on site tdi guy about buyback yet and explains how they have already began buying cars back some time ago. As our conversation continues his floor manager joins in, it became very apparent that they knew nothing about the separation of the 2.0 and 3.0. I am dumbfounded at how they can know so little about a major event in the brand they are representing. Sorry about the long post, not so good at making a long story short.

In the period of 1980 - 2002, I owned 3 different MBZ diesels (one, a 240D I owned throughout that entire time), & it was when MBZ was not always able to meet CA & other state emission requirements, or those set by the Feds. So many of these years MBZ diesels couldn't be sold in the US, but I remained somewhat oblivious about this & just enjoyed that I was still driving the cars I wanted & enjoyed using. But like you, now for some reason this feels different, largely because our VW TDI's have been made pariahs by the folks who created them. If it weren't for all the craziness that has arisen about diesels in the US, I would still be just as sanguine about the fact that my 2013 Touareg is still the same car I bought 3 years ago with a plan to drive the pants off of it & enjoy it while doing so. Maybe when all the dust settles, if VW can come up with the fix they say they can, it will be possible to return to that kind of enjoyment of our TDI's. At least I hope that will be the case.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like that will be an option, at least not without longer wait than I can accept.

Unless you have a real reason to trade, I would recommend that you wait it out a little bit longer. While it is true that the number of North American 3.0 TDIs are small, the worldwide numbers are sufficient to say that it is not an orphaned engine. Parts are not the problem. Finding someone to repair them is the issue. Hopefully either a good dealer tech or a good independent are within reach.

Any of these cars could be retrofitted and fixed. What VW is doing is balancing the costs of the repair vs the cost of the buyback. If it costs less to buy them back, then that is what VW is doing.

Yes, VW Corporate has turned out to be a bunch of hypocrites. Very few large corporations live above that level. VW is positively saintly if compared to any of the international banks.

Perhaps we need to hold our elected leaders and our bankers to a higher standard.

White stuff is not snow

I might understand the crappy placement of the urea tank on the gen 1. After that, after the next refresh...shame on you VW. That stupid tank should had been moved and fixed.

Probably was not any money in the Winter Kon budget to fix it.
I can see how shaky the tech is when I lift the cover to the spare tire and access to the Ad Blue and there is white stuff all over the the top of the tire and surrounding area. That is not a good design. But mine is destined to go back sometime this spring I would believe. It will be interesting to see what the market has for VAG products 2013 and up.

If you're inclined to turn it in, and have the option of parking it, that's what I would do. Then I'd drop it off and leave the recent repair paperwork on the dash. Let it be their problem. Hey...the dealer fixed it once, at your cost. It's running...just tape over the CEL. :)

My CEL light is on more than off and always has been. When the dealer in Knoxville charged my $90 just to check the code (payable towards a repair) I made a decision to ignore it from there on out.

Maybe even better since a 10 year 120k mile warranty (from new) comes with the deal now.

If VW is going to put a big emission warranty on the Touareg, and you have paid previously to fix the ad-blue system...

Will you be able to present all the old repair bills back to VW and get the money you spent fixing the ad-blue back?

That could be 1 to 2 thousand dollars for some of the owners here.

My wife has the itch for a new Macan. What happens to our part of the settlement if we sell our car prior to the owner final settlement of January 31, 2017? Will we receive any compensation for being the original owner of our 2013 TDI Executive?
