That should surprise no-one, looking at US forums for other brands the words "VW diesel" are tainted for ever - partly from righteous indignation at the cheating but also as a way of "killing" a successful competitor.

GM seems to be a few years behind the ball, it can offer diesels in Cruze because they're developed by and used by Opel - despite the fact that Opel/Vauxhalls have been found in European test to pollute more than VW's !!! Mazda get a lot of issues with Q/R on their diesels in Europe.

I don't know what VW's engine line-up is in the US for Golf and Passat but they need to bring in their new breed of smaller capacity turbo-petrol/gasoline to fill the void and then at least VW owners will have a high torque option as their replacement.
Mazda doesn't offer a diesel here - they tried to get one here for years but ran into the problems that VW cheated themselves around. Same with all the other Japanese marques.

In the US, GM is only offering the Cruze diesel because they can, and there is absolutely no advertising for them, nor any interest in dealers putting in any effort to sell them. Doubt you'll find more than one or two on any given lot, and I would almost guarantee the salespeople don't even know they're there. And, their fuel economy is horrendous compared to VW's - GM's smaller gasser turbo-4's are much cheaper for only a couple fewer highway miles per gallon on the US cycle.

However...due to tightening emissions regs everywhere, you're going to see automakers are moving back to larger-displacement gas engines. There's a new tension between fuel economy and emissions - the micro-turbo-fours have passed the knee in the curve - you might call it a 'hockey stick' - where better fuel economy no longer means lower emissions.

I hope the 3.0 buyback process takes 6 months from the time of announcement to check in hand, but expect 9 months. We should see the vast majority of the 2.0 buybacks being processed in the next 4 months hopefully at a throughput greater than 50K per month. However given the way that the buyback system bogged down my optimism may be misplaced, but I think we have to clear the log jam of 2.0 buybacks in the system first.

I'm not sure if I want to pull the trigger on replacement right away since I really only *need* the Touareg 5 months of the year. As JettaGetUpandGo mentioned it's winter in Wisconsin which means the idiots amongst us forgot how to drive.
I hope it takes that long, too. Not ready to find another vehicle. Need time to find what I want. The miles and and value won't matter much at this point.

This is where I'm at.

I love the mountain lifestyle that a 4WD diesel with true offroad capabilities enables for me, and my T2 is an ideal compromise between a JGC and a Range Rover. Getting almost 30mpg on the way to offroading deep in the Rockies or the Four Corners is the best.

But...I can do probably 80% of that with our '09 Volvo XC70...I have friends with trucks to go where we currently go in my Touareg. The last 20% is usually only with friends anyway.

So...do I go for something fun to drive like an Audi A6 or an S4, or a Jaguar XE/XF? I love the way the Jags drive, and have loved Audi sedans since my dearly departed '01. And I love driving.

Or, do I go full-baller and lease a RR Sport Td6 for three years, costing me near nothing with a decent settlement/buyback payment?

Or do I go with a JGC Trailhawk with the diesel, and make the dealer buy me a 100,000 mile Mopar warranty? I would have to endure the hell that is UConnect, but maybe they'll offer a free Android/Apple upgrade in the next year or two.

In any case, people are pissing and moaning about having to wait for their 2.0L buyback money to get processed - some idiots put the cart before the horse and bought a new car believing they'll just fill out a couple internet forms and *poof* get a direct deposit from VW. So...I'll wait to see how this shakes out and then wait a bit to avoid the rush when it happens. Southern Colorado has a *lot* of diesel VWs.
I'm okay with a gasser going forward:

Macan 2.0 liter with Premium Package Plus and hitch. That's one I like. Only issue is it's a little small in back but not a deal breaker.

Jaguar F-Pace. Don't like buying something this new but maybe in a few months. Won't get that one in a diesel.

Jeep Grand Cherokee. Maybe. I have a Dodge Durango Citadel. Nice ride but...

New Audi Q5 coming. Worth a look.

2017 Touareg Wolfsburg. Still on my list for the right price. I have daughters about to be driving age.

Do they want to drive? Almost everyone I work with who has kids of early driving years have had to *make* them get their licenses...they're perfectly content being chauffeured around so they don't have a minute away from their phones.

One does. One doesn't. Two years apart but the oldest gets her permit in January and she is excited. I'm nervous and want a safe ride. My son, who is 10, is ready to drive now! He has a little ATV and is a pro. Yikes!

I don't wat to be the guy bringing in his TDI to a dealership that has abandoned the TDI.

I will consider a hatchback or a wagon. If I deem the VW hot hatch too small for me and the wagon to underpowered I will find the best available model from another brand. Since purchasing the Treg in 2011 I have retired so no longer can consider paying upwards of 55K for a vehicle. This was supposed to be that long term vehicle.

I think Mazda might be drunk, they committed to FINALLY bringing the Skyactive diesel to the US for the 2018 Cx-5. Supposed to be on order late 2017. I've heard this fantasy before, believe it when I see it. OTOH it's speced at 310 lb ft of torque, SWEET!

Reactions: Oregon TDI
Just an observation to give perspective...

I'll be talking to friends and acquaintances and somehow the conversation turns to cars. Keeping in mind I proudly own two VWs: GTI MK7, and Touareg TDI. I say something about dieselgate and the TDI etc. Most people have no idea what I'm talking about. A few vaguely recall hearing something in the news about a VW recall or some problem but they pay no attention because hey they don't drive a VW. And meanwhile Honda & others are recalling hundreds of thousands (millions?) of cars equipped with killer Takata airbags. Or Toyota trucks & SUVs with frames rusting out prematurely.

We however sweat over every new VW news report and parse every word VW execs proclaim which might affect us. Which is natural since we're closer to the problem.

As nooby said it's just a lump of tin. No sense in getting emotionally invested in VW's malfeasance.

Maybe none of that makes sense. In that case, carry on, nothing to see here. Just drive and enjoy your TDI as if nothing is distracting you.

Move along... :)

Happy Thanksgiving! No discussion of politics or dieselgate at the dinner table! ;)

Agree! Not a single person I know even follows dieselgate other than the co-worker who got me to try diesel -- this person owns a BMW diesel. Happy Turkey Day!

I don't think your chances of totaling your car are going to go up - and the two are not related. If you total it today, or totaled it yesterday, you're still screwed if they announce the settlement tomorrow, or next month, or next year. Just don't be one of those idiots.
My chances of totaling the car are not going to go up (although you could argue that the chances are higher during winter in a snowy climate). Until the details of a buyback are announced, it's all speculation. I'd purchase the replacement vehicle sooner (I've been itching to sell the Touareg for over a year now as my needs have changed), but I'm not willing to do so until I know the specifics. If the Touareg was totaled tomorrow and no buyback was announced I would purchase a replacement vehicle based on the value that the insurance company pays and move on.

Not that they are the masses, but we were at two dealership this week, and both knew exactly what was going on. My mother-in-law has also been following it from the day that it broke with the 2.0's. At that time, the 3.0's were NOT in the scandal, and I assured her that all was well. Well, that didn't turn out so good for me. Now, she's asking all the time what we are going to do now that we are caught up in it as well. In the end, I think that people, at least subliminally, know more about this than we think.

A few posts back, VW indicates that they are stopping selling diesels in the US. That was the death nail for diesels in the US. The US was finally getting over the whole diesels smoke, they stink, and are loud, and now all of that is gone. It's hard for the average consumer to consider a diesel when some of the new gassers are getting close to the same fuel economy as their diesel cousins. That has to be the number one driver for consumers in cars. With SUV's, it's a different story, and it is tragic that now that horse is probably dead as well. Yeah, there are still some diesel SUV's out there, but I don't see them doing well, and the premium is just too high. And, you really almost need to have a reason to own a diesel SUV, like towing to make it worth it at this point. And, at this point, the only luxury diesel SUV's available in the US are the Jag F-Pace, Land Rover, and Jeep, if you're so inclined.

I LOVE DIESEL, but we are getting out as soon as the check is in hand. I know that I'm going to miss it, but it's replacement is no slouch either. Unfortunately, it won't pass many gas pumps...

What's your replacement? Btw, MB still is selling diesels.

Funny, my wife said last night that if I bring up politics or dieselgate, no pumpkin pie for me...

That said, I'm safe here ;)

Happy Thanksgiving all...
